After viewing the image posted in google classroom, provide ONE piece of evidence based on the Winter Palace that supports the argument that politicians used architecture to legitimize their rule, and explain how this piece of evidence supports this argument.

The Winter Place of St. Petersburg, Russia, built 1732 to 1759, and the Palace of Versailles of Paris, built 1678 to 1682 share both a common aspect that politicians used architecture to legitimize their rule. As shown in the image, elaborate and massive structures were built for the Winter Palace, showing not only the wealth being accumulated but the power possessed by the ruler as well.

Palace of Versailles built in 4 years compared to The Winter Palace built in 27 years, gives support to the fact that The Winter Palace was built in a more elaborate scheme because of how long it took.

Grand architecture has been used for centuries to consolidate and legitimize rulers' power within their states and over their citizens, the Winter palace (built 1732-1759) is no exception to this. Built to not only house members of the government and former royal family, but also to signify the status of the Russian government through the use of the highest-quality materials and complex designs similar to that of the Palace of Versailles (built 1678-1682), as shown in the images, to create an elaborate and both an economically and historically valuable work of art that still stands today.

The use of architecture to legitimize rule is apparent because the buildings of politicians were typically larger and used columns and great arches as shown in the Winter Palace, 1732-1759. This was used to show the power that they held. The Winter Palace was built over a span of 27 years while the Palace of Versailles was built in only 4 years

Throughout history,we consistently see rulers, leaders, and politicians use architecture to legitimize, their power. Peter the Great brought Western European cultural and social values to Russia which is clearly shown in distinct architectural similarities between the Palace of Versailles, and the Winter Palace. King Louis XIV built the Palace of Versailles to show his wealth and power to the world. This principle clearly "rubbed off" on Peter the Great who chose to show Russia wealth in the same manner. In both images one can notice similarities such as the rounded windows, block y structure and castle-like influences that are clear staples of Western European architecture.

The Winter Palace took almost five times as long to build as the Palace of Versailles did and as shown in the picture, the Winter Palace is larger than the Palace of Versailles. The Winter Palace politicians probably used their palace to legitimize their rule more than the Palace of Versailles because their palace is more elaborate and took way longer to build then the Palace of Versailles. The more luxurious the palace was the wealthier the politicians were and the more power they had. Allied governments would most likely feel more secure with the Russian's palace than with Paris's because it had more grandeur and luxury, which meant more money.

Louis the XIV built Versailles in order to demonstrate the power of absolute monarchy and that anything he says goes. The Winter Palace was built after Peter the Great had established the reforms to make Russia more western, these reforms led to Russia using symbols common in the western style rule in their own capabilities. Anna Ivanovna the leader of Russia at the time the Winter Palace was built had come in after Peter II and was trying to signify her rule. Which is why she copied the Infamous Versailles in all of its grandeur.

By showing that they can construct large building, they show that they have massive control over both resources and people. These were large, wasteful uses of the material yet they did it anyway, BECAUSE THEY COULD. These showed that they were powerful. They built it because they wanted to show that they had the power to do these things. The great designs that are on display, as well as the details that are shown are proof to the lower class that the ruling class was powerful, both in a political way and in a industrialist way. They wanted people to know that "I AM THE SENATE" - Sheev
I also noticed that they very tall buildings, at least for there time.

Politicians used architecture to legitimize their rule by building opulent palaces and moving the monarch to said palace. By doing this, the monarch was effectively able to consolidate power from aristocrats and noblemen. An example of this is the palace of Versailles, as shown in the image. Versailles was a way for King Louis to move the monarchy away from the problems in Paris and make all who wished to associate with the king move to the palace. The king effectively made foreign powers seek him out and participate in the many rituals of Versailles if they wished to win his favor.
