I found that covid waste was affecting the environment and animals and why it affects the environment and animals. My Line of Inquiry was Ways covid protection could be changed to better help the environment. I researched on Ways covid protection could be better and why do we need to make a better covid protection. My concept was changed as it linked to my LOI. My group central idea was The choices we make in response to covid affect the world as we have the responsibility to help protect the world.

Km: hello, my name is Khang Minh.
Joy: I’m Joy!
Erin: And I’m Erin.
KM: We are students from AIS class 6LHA, This is our exhibition presentation!
Joy: Hopefully you like it!
Erin: and enjoy!

Khang Minh: Hello, COVID has been here since 2019 December, and it’s still a issue. Ever since COVID came, people started using masks which helped them in the pandemic, but there was a downside to that. Most people were using disposable masks as they were easy to use and didn’t need to wash, which sounds good but you throw it away after use. It goes into the rivers, oceans, ponds, lakes, streets and etc. It doesn’t just dissolve, it stays there for years upon years till it dissolves. Here are examples of COVID waste.

Joy: Animals get strangled by the covid waste and it gets trapped there. The straps on the disposable masks gets tangled into an animals body parts, some animals manage to survive but some die when tangled. Animals think covid waste is food and eats it, it leads to stomach pain and death. It’s not just disposable masks, there’s also more! Like gloves, covid tests, face shields and the PPE blue suits. Here are the examples of animals caught in Covid Waste.

Erin: Our TD Theme is, “how we organise ourselves”. The reason why we chose that is because we need organise our world and if we make our world messy and dirty, the world will be a nasty place to live in. If we stop wasting covid waste, we could help organise the world. This is an example of not being organised.

Joy: Our Central idea is, “the choices we make in response to global issues affect the world. The reason why we chose that is because when covid started, we chose to make disposable masks and other disposable covid waste. And it is our responsibility to make the right choices. Now, in oceans and on land, there is covid waste everywhere! This is an example of our central idea.

KM: Our TD Theme and Central idea links to: People do economic activities which Leads to global issues, the choices we make could lead to global issues and the things we choose has an impact on humankind. The Central idea is about the choices we make and the global issues affecting the world. The descriptor is about the economic activities and the impact on humankind and the environment. When covid first started, we only thought about our safety, not the environment. Now, covid waste is everywhere in the world. This is an example.

KM: The global goals connect to: climate action, life below water and life on land. We chose this as after we use covid waste, we throw it in the trash which will end up on land or below water. As for the life on land and below water, animals which live there mistaken covid waste as food, they either get strangled by it or eat it, both are very bad. So it affects animals on land and below the water.

Khang Minh: How have face mask affected the environment?

When Covid came, people started using face masks which were the classic blue disposable masks, it helped us in the pandemic but not the environment. Now, there of lots of Covid waste everywhere in the world. Things including disposable masks, gloves, face shields and the PPE Blue suits. Did you know that there is actually more face masks then jellyfish in the ocean?! Now turtles eat face masks thinking it’s jellyfish. The face masks has been killing animals also, which is very bad. I am still figuring out how much masks are on land, but if one person uses a disposable mask everyday, they use 365 masks a year. Times that by 7billion is estimated 2 555 000 000 000 masks a year! Let’s find out the evolution of covid waste.

Before covid, disposable masks were used in hospitals and sometimes when you’re sick. When covid hit, masks started to be mandatory to use, and most people used disposable masks and some used reusable, as back then, disposable masks were cheap and comes in big boxes. But for reusable mask, a box is quite expensive so people used disposable masks. This is a graph of different types of mask people used in Vietnam 2020. So much people back then used disposable masks! Did you know that every minute, 3 MILLION masks have been thrown away? 3 million every minute! How much is that! That’s like 180Million masks an hour! along with disposable and reusable masks, people also used face shields, which blocks someone spitting germs on your face. The thing is, like disposable it gets thrown away after use, so the better thing to use is reusable mask. It doesn’t destroy the environment and it doesn’t kill animals land and sea. Now, a lot more people use reusable masks, which is good but people still use disposable. We need to stop that! I am still figuring out if there are other types of covid protection and maybe we could make a better covid protection!

What does my line of inquiry link to?

It links to life on land and below the water, since 2020, animals have been dying to the covid waste and we need to step up, if you don’t know how to help, the easiest way is to wear a reusable mask. But, if you are using a disposable mask, throw it in the bin and cut the straps from it.

Slide 3:How could we make a better covid protection?

It needs to be reusable so it doesn’t affect the environment or animals, secondly we need a good quality mask, 3ply. So it also protects us. Then we need to make the mask comfortable, we could use materials such as cotton, fabric and more! Then the price needs to be reasonable so people will buy it, so now the mask is reusable, good quality, reasonable price and lastly comfortable, then it will be a good mask. If we want to make something other than a mask, it needs to have the requirements as a mask. It has to be eco-friendly for the environment, and there needs to be a size for everyone. I still need to find good materials used for the mask as there are a lot of types. Now on to Joy and Erin’s line of inquiry!

Joy: Our line inquiry was How the human response to Covid has impacted the environment?
There have been many bad and good things about our response to Covid. Millions of human lives have been saved, but the impact on the environment has been really bad. Many animals have died as a result of the waste created.

There was a dead penguin who ate a mask and died. The people found it in Brazil. It is a horrifying fact that a penguin died from a mask, the poor penguin must have ate a mask on the beach in Brazil.

Erin: Before lockdown there was lots of air pollution smoke in Italy, but, during the lockdown when no one could leave their homes and factories were closed the smoke was gone and we could see the blue sky. Covid actually helped clear the earth’s air.

Example, Meanwhile, air quality stations in Metro Manila’s most populous city, Quezon City, recorded a decrease in PM2.5 by 80 per cent or more during 16—24 March when enhanced community quarantine was enforced. a country of 1.3 billion people, imposed a 21-day total lockdown from 24 March to 15 April, the air had become clear enough for people living in several north Indian cities to see the snow-capped Himalayas in the distance for the first time in decades

Slide 1:
We found that disposable masks need 450 years to decay. Also, We found that 52 billion disposable face masks made at 2020, and 1.6 billion of them ended up in our oceans. What an shocking fact!

The waste in the N95 and surgical masks produced a mass of plastic waste equivalent to about 7% of the size of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a huge floating pile of trash in the middle of the ocean

Joy: The mask is usually made of polypropylene, a type of plastic. It then breaks down in the sun into microplastics, tiny pieces of plastic that are smaller than 5mm. these are then eaten by aquatic animals and birds, blocking the digestive tract and causing the stomach to be filled with plastic. They have even found microplastics inside human blood.

Slide 11
Example
Scientists analyzed blood samples from 22 anonymous donors, all healthy adults, and found plastic particles in 17 people. Half of the samples contain PET plastic, which is commonly used in beverage bottles, and the other third contain polystyrene, which is used in food and other product packaging. A quarter of blood samples contain polyethylene, which creates plastic carrier bags.

Erin: Recent studies have shown that microplastics can stick to the outer membrane of red blood cells, limiting their ability to carry oxygen. In pregnant mice, they are quickly transferred through their lungs to the heart, brain, and other organs of the fetus.

Slide12
Joy: Look at this Syringe. It look so bad.
The disposal of medical waste from COVID-19 is a global problem.
Medical waste management is full part of the supply chain. The improper treatment of medical waste is serious public health, and environmental outcomes can have a significant impact on global health. So, we need to tell to people with this information!

Khang Minh: This is our ballad: (on the screen)

Khang Minh: This is a graph of how many people in AIS from year 1 to 6 uses disposable and reusable masks.
Joy: since so many people uses disposable masks in AIS…
Erin: We wanted to hold a face mask design competition!

Khang Minh: We made it so whoever makes the best design wins and gets their own design in the school shop. They will draw/make their design on the entry form we made and give it to our classroom or on teams to Mr Hansen.
Joy: We went to all the classrooms from year 6 to year 1 and informed them about the competition, we ended up getting 126 entries!
Erin: We ended up choosing the design from Stella 5YSA.
Khang Minh: On the next page, we will show the emails we sent and got.

Khang Minh: emails (already know what to say)

My learner profile is Knowledgeable, I chose this as I can explain deeply into what I learnt. I can understand and put what I know into my own words. When I want to put in information in my presentation, I will put it in words that is easy to read. Here is an example: I find some good information and I analyse it and try to understand it deeply. Then, I will put it in my own words.

The learner profile that I’m bad at is communicators, I don’t understand how to communicate with a person who thinks English is hard. I will try to explain and make them understand. But usually they won’t understand. But, I will help them by telling them what to do by showing them. Here is an example: When i have tasks, I try to tell Erin what to do, but she doesn’t really know what I mean, so Joy will help me communicate with her. I will try my best to communicate with Erin.

My Approach to learning is Thinking Skills. I chose this as I show that I can analyse and evaluate on what I have found, If my writing is hard to read, I put something creative that links to my writing. I will reflect on what I learnt and I will try and improve. Here is an example: When I make a mistake, I go reflect on what I could change to fix my mistake. I will think hard on what to write and how it will be easy to understand for others.Joy: I will talk about my Learn profile and ATL
I am a good communicator!
Because I helped a new student to understand what we were doing, when she came to our team. When she came to our team, I helped her to understand our issue and what we wanted to do. Also, my confidence in speaking aloud in English is much better.

I find it hard to be an inquirer.
I’m not really good at ask lots of questions. For Example, I don’t know how to ask questions to help my research and I am shy to ask my teachers so, I can’t understand little bit.
With the Approaches to Learning, ATL I have good research skills.
Because I am good at collecting information and data. I can find some information, when they want help to found something. Example, when I want to find a picture or other information. I made a survey on face masks and we went and asked all the students what sort of masks they wear.

Erin: I will talk to my Learn profile.
My good learn profile is Balanced.
Because,I enjoy learning.
Example, when l do Exhibition first time ,I very enjoyed to do Exhibition with my team.

My bad learn profile is Thinkers.Because,I’m not good at learning from my mistakes.
Example,when I have a mistakes,I don’t think about learn today.

ATL
I will talk about my ATL
My good ATL is self management skills.
Because,l organize my self and my time.
Example,I’m tired today.so I’m determined not to overdo it.

Mr Hansen wearing face mask.

Khang Minh: thank you for listening and
Everyone: bye
