The Jews thought that the Germans had good intentions since the Germans were putting up a facade to hide their true intentions and when the 8th day of Passover arrived, the Jews were forced into restrictive rules and were forced out of their homes.

At this point in the chapter, Eliezer realizes that the Germans were never really on their side and just wanted to stay in the households of the Jews to get their trust and gaslight them into thinking that the Germans have good motives. This moment connects to the theme of Individual Survival vs The Collective Good because after the Germans revealed their plans on what they were gonna do to the Jews, the lives of the Jews immediately took a turn for the worst; making them more prone to death.

One night, Mrs. Schachter started screaming about seeing huge flames out of the window in the dark night but when the others looked out, they saw nothing which led them to think that Mrs. Schachter was crazy until they arrived in Birkenau.

At this point in the chapter, Mrs. Schachter yells out that there's a fire outside the windows of the wagon, making the other prisoners stir awake and go check it out to find nothing but absolute darkness. This moment connects to the theme of State Sponsored Violence, showing that when they arrived in Birkenau, everything was on fire around them and 'strange creatures wearing striped jackets and black pants' went into the wagon and started forcing them out into the flames.

In this moment, Eliezer realizes that the situation he's in is terrible and puts him and his father at great risk of death; since Eliezer and his father weren't educated about what happened in Auschwitz, they don't know how serious the selections are.

At this point in the chapter, the Jews were praying outside of the camps for the dead and sanctifying God's name, Eliezer becomes angry when the thought of how their God had left them to suffer came to his mind but yet the people are still praying to him. This moment connects to the theme of struggling with religious faith since after Eliezer saw the burning furnaces filled with bodies of children, teenagers, adults, and the elderly, he began to question if God was still with them or if he already abandoned his people and left them to die.

This event highlights Eliezer's development from a boy who believed in God due to the beliefs his religion and his parents taught him to a boy that realized that God has abandoned them when he saw the hanged people who have accidentally wronged the higher ups.

At this point in the chapter, the SS army abuses and if the prisoners were to get on the nerves of the higher ups, they would be hanged in public where everyone can see. This moment connects to the theme of Individual Survival vs The Collective Good, showing that the prisoners had to be more careful in what they do to avoid being publicly executed by the unforgiving SS.

This moment is important because it shows how Eliezer realizes that God has not helped the people who still choose to pray to him even though their beloved God has done nothing to help the people survive.

At this point in the chapter, Eliezer hears the people praying to God outside of their camps and expresses his anger towards the divine by refusing to fast on the day of Yom Kippur as his way of rebellion. This moment connects to the theme of struggling with religious faith since Eliezer's thoughts show that he is doubtful of God.

When Rabbi Eliahu came to Eliezer and his father to ask them about the whereabouts of his son and tell the story of how he lost him in the crowd, Eliezer then assumes that Rabbi Eliahu's son abandoned his father to get rid of the responsibilities.

At this point in the chapter, Eliezer hears about what Rabbi Eliahu's son did during the march to the new camp and he does not want to become just like the son of Rabbi Eliahu to the point where he even prays to the God he doesn't believe in anymore. This moment connects to the theme of Family Loyalty and Obligations because Rabbi Eliahu's son abandons him while Eliezer refuses to abandon his father.

Eliezer tried to stop the woman from throwing anymore coins into the water so the natives would stop diving to get the coins, this flashback is similar to the event happening currently where people are throwing bread into the wagon and watching the people fight.

At this point in the chapter, Eliezer realizes that he's in the same situation the natives were in; him and the other prisoners in the wagon were being used as entertainment for the Germans outside throwing them bread. This moment connects to the theme of individual survival vs the collective good because people were fighting over the bread which they need for energy for their weak bodies.

Eliezer went to the doctor to try and get him to cure his father who was suffering from dysentery but the doctor refused to do anything and the Blockalteste hit Eliezer with the truth.

At this point in the chapter, Eliezer realizes that what the Blockalteste said was right and that it was too late to save his old father; but he could never admit it to himself. This moment connects to the theme of family loyalty and obligations because Eliezer refuses to make himself accept the truth and leave his father, though in the end, he sadly leaves his father to die.

The prisoners in the camps were getting evacuated due to the liquidation of a camp and in the end, Ezekiel had forgotten about his parents and only cared about food.

At this point in the chapter, Eliezer becomes emotionless after the death of his father since he felt like he had lost the meaning of his life after he lost his father. This moment connects to the theme of Individual Survival vs The Collective Good because Eliezer has to survive by himself now.
