Education should teach a way of being. It should be used to train children in the way they should go and help point their paths toward God and Christlike living (Prov. 22:6). Education should help students develop the fruits of the Spirit (Gal 5:22-23). It should help Christian to develop a vocation with which to respond to the calling in life (Matt. 28:19-20).
Education should both pass on the timeless truths of the gospel, and reform the sinful world as an ambassador of God. Christian education is therefore both conservative and revolutionary.

Firstly, students are made by God in his image. We are a creation, but more than merely an animal (Gen 1:27). We are relational, and capable of love, kindness, and rationality. We are created to work and to be stewards over God's creation (Gen 1:28).
However, all people have been separated from God in the attempt to put ourselves in the place of God (Rom 3:23). Because of the fall, people have become inherently selfish and the image of God in humankind is distorted. There is a tension between good and evil, and ultimately sin leads to death. Because of the fall, our students will tend toward selfishness.
However, God sent his son Jesus to provide redemption for people. Through his redemption people can once again be restored into the image of God (Col 3:10). The ultimate need of students it to be reconciled to Christ. Students are people who have infinite potential as we engage in redemption and reconciliation toward Jesus through education.

Above all, Christian teachers are called to reflect Christ in everything they do (Phil 2:5-11, Gal 5:22-23). We are pictures of Jesus and his work as we follow his model of restoration in his ministry (2 Cor 5:20). We are to live by example and mentor and disciple those younger than us (1 Cor 4:16, 11:1, 1 Thes 2:6-12). Teachers are to be humble authorities, providing structure in humility (1 Cor 3-4). We are pictures of Christ through healing and protection as we work to bring about the upside down kingdom of the gospels (Luke 10:25-37, Amos 5:7-15, James 2:1-13). Finally, Christian teachers are mediators, bringing peace to those around them, and solving conflicts fairly in order to best represent the kingdom of God (Matt 15:18-35, 2 Cor 5:18).
In all these things, teachers carry the heavy but beautiful burden to represent Christ to their students (James 3:1).

Learning/Teaching Process

Jesus modeled the teaching process in his ministry on earth. Jesus prioritized relationship when he taught. His students were his disciples, and he had close relationships with them where he mentored them closely and knew them well.
Secondly, Jesus taught those around him using parables. He told stories that taught lessons, and were relatable to his listeners (Luke 10:25-37). Jesus also taught through object lessons that helped make points in new ways (Matt 6:30, 22:15-22). Finally, Jesus taught through questions. He asked questions that led people back to the truth of the scripture, and helped think in new ways (Mark 12:34).
Jesus' teaching on earth was filled with both theory and practice, and as educators (Matt 10:5-15; Luke 10:1-20).

As Christian educators, we should teach with methodologies that help people to realize their identity as made in the image of God. We should treat our students as more than animals, and help them become responsible disciples who can exhibit self-control through moral decisions and mental and ethical maturity. Our methodologies should lead to the development of Christlike character. According to Knight, Christians should teach students to consider new material, choose what ought to be done with it, and commit to act on what they have learned.

Just like Jesus, teachers must teach in ways that reconcile students toward God and lead them to him, understanding the individual needs of the student, and recognizing their own imperfect human state.

Describe the actions & words of a fictional teacher representative of this philosophy.

A fictional teacher who represented my philosophy would base the classroom off of the kingdom of heaven. Students would work hard at their jobs, recognizing that God created us to work. The classroom would be a community that values other people and treats all humans as valuable. This fictional teacher would ask questions like "in what ways to we see order in math? Can you tell me something you find beautiful about what we learned in science? Now that we have looked at some of the brokenness in our community, let's brainstorm some ways to help restore it!"
