This picture tells a story of a family in Baghdad who would receive text messages asking for money, if not their house would be burned down. They were threatened with being killed if they asked the police for help. They didn't have connections with powerful people, and they couldn't afford to eat regularly. Later one night, they woke up to their house on fire. The details I look for in a powerful portrait are the facial expressions, the kind of setting or environment it's taken in and the body language or positioning of the people in the photo.

- caitlin

The picture tells us a story of a unique and trendy older couple looking to stay relevant as they age. I look for details that do not always stand out or show a specific story. A photo can have so many different interpretations depending on the viewers opinions and experiences so each person sees the same photo differently. I chose this photo because I adore our elders and feel as though a lot of times they tend to disappear into the background, are treated as though they are a burden or unchanging and angry. They have so many stories and so much knowledge to share if we just pause and listen.

This photo tells a story by showing the shock and relief behind her eyes, along with the tents in the background, which show that she is in a desolate situation without stable housing. In a powerful portrait, I look for emotion and other nuances to provide context within the image. A photo is an argument when it shows anything thought provoking. I chose this photo because the caption grabbed my attention. Further, the story behind the image was even more captivating.

-Haley

This picture tells the story of a couple whose two sons died, one by suicide and one in war. Mother's touch carries a deep longing for the sons she lost. Even though they lost their sons to depression and war, they didn’t give up on life. Instead, they chose to help young people who are struggling with depression. And now, they say they are "happy now."

This photo expresses the creativity and connection between a father and their child through artwork they've colored together. The details I look for in a portrait is the fashion, scenery, lighting, and angle it is shot from. I think what makes a photo an argument is the way each person has their own perception of the world. I chose this photo because it is soft and wholesome to see the inmate bonding with their child by coloring with each other.

This photograph depicts a WW2 solider before and after war (1941-1945).

On the left, he appears youthful and happy while, in the photo on the right he is noticeably older and no longer smiling. The photo implies that the solider faced harsh conditions during the war and likely watched his fellow soldiers die in battle.

I believe this photo portrays the cruel nature of war and the physical and emotional effects it has on people.

This photo tells the story of a young girl accepting that the way she handled a breakup wasn't exactly the correct way. She says she handled it by hurting the person who ended the relationship, as a way to feel more powerful. In the end however, she realized people are people, they'll hurt others, and she sadly was just affected by what her ex partner was going through. Her facial expression shows how she regrets the way she acted after the breakup, she looks disappointed in herself. In a powerful portrait I look at the facial expressions, because it's what really tells the story. I think that the photo vs the quote creates an argument. I picked this picture because as a young girl myself, I relate to hurting someone after they've hurt me. Similarly to her I have realized that people are always going to hurt others, and that seeking revenge isn't always the right answer. -Zoe
