It was more convenient for zimbardo to use a basement rather than a real prison
Strength- more definitive cause and effect analysis due to high levels of control


Weakness - they lack ecological validity due to the high levels of control 
Weakness - lack of ecological validity leads to the simulation being less generaliseable to real life situations with real people.
Weaknness - participants are not protected from harm as the simulated situation could cause them to carry out actions that the participants may regret later on.

STRENGTHS:
-Easy to manipulate and control extraneous variables, making clear the fact that it is indeed the IV influencing the DV
-Easy to document precisely and keep a close eye on, through statistics and descriptions, or video recordings, etc.

PROBLEMS:
-Low ecological validity, as the population is difficult to fully represent in a small sample, especially if the incorrect sampling method is used. If this is the case, the findings are not necessarily generalizable.
-Low mundane realism

Strengths:
1) Is tightly controlled, thus reducing risk of extraneous variables interfering with experiment.
2) Easy to monitor and any issues that arise can be quickly resolved.

Weaknesses:
1) Potential ethical issues, such as deception and physical/psychological harm,
2) High levels of control lower the ecological validity so the experiment is more difficult to generalise.
3) Mundane realism tends to be low.
