I decided to experiment with mark-making. I have used the spiral technique, the zigzag technique, the wave technique, the line making technique. I was inspired by the idea of revolution and choose a wave like format because it shows movement, which is one of the definitions of revolution. The abstract style makes the view point curl around, and divides the mark-making into sections. I want to explore mark-making more and use these techniques in my work.

I had a idea in my head, I would make a spinning top out of clay. First, I needed to create a base that was hollow. I wanted to put the sculpture in the kiln so I needed a hollow base. I got the clay and placed it on the fabric mat, and began to roll the clay. I wanted to create numerous sausage like shapes, rolling them not too thin as to not to make the sculpture fragile and not too thick so that the sausages would be easy to blend together and would be more malleable.

I then stacked the rolls, placing them on top of each other to create a circular tower. I made the tower bigger then what I originally wanted because I wanted the sculpture to be sturdy and strong. Next, I rubbed gently on the spiral rolls, blending them seamlessly, squashing them together to give the result a smooth finish.

Final product - "Spinning top"

I made lines on the clay sculpture and added a point in the middle.

Spinning top

Revolution. It is a word that means many things. War, agriculture, a dramatic change in behavior, metamorphosis. One of the many interpretations of the word revolution is movement. Something moving, like a spinning top, which leads me to this sculpture of a spinning top, that I have created.

This is an idea that I have spontaneously thought of, I have used the mediums of clay in this artwork. It is made to the size of 11x11 inches, and it has taken me 2 hours to do.

In this artwork, I have used the cutting tool to make the mark-making techniques of contour and line making, which will help me show the movement of this spinning top. I have used the smudging technique to create a smooth finish and have used the coiling technique to create a circular base. The lines on the flat top of this piece create a sense of movement, the lines circle around the top, giving the idea that it is spinning.

In this artwork I have come across problems. Using the coiling technique means that you have to start with a sausage like shape, of which needed to be thick as to when you blend the coils together, the base will get thinner and thinner, this has happened in my case, and the base was too thin to hold up the top without slacking and dipping in areas so , to solve this problem, I created pillars to hold up the top to make the base, strong, sturdy and structurally secure, which gave a flat finish to the top of the sculpture.

I like this artwork. I like the idea of movement, the dip in the middle reminds me of this optical illusion, which I have given below. I like the flat finish at the top, and I also like the texture of the contour technique at the top. I like how the coiling technique has given the artwork a smooth finish. I need to improve my structure skills, as the fact that this sculpture has pillars is not true to what an ordinary spinning top would have. To improve, I think that I would make the bottom thinner or pointy, as this would resemble a spinning top more. I asked my classmate Devanya what she thought of this sculpture, and she said, “I like the idea that it is moving, I think that you should have made the coiling sausages thicker so the base would not be so fragile.” I agree with my classmate Devanya and will make the sausages that I use to use the coiling technique thicker if i use the coiling technique again.

Revolutionary poster

This is a tracing paper poster collage that I have made using the mediums of fine liner, coloured felt-tip pen. This artwork has been made to the size of A3. I have used the mediums if coloured felt tip and fine liner because they show up well against the transparent tracing paper. Also, I wanted to add a splash of colour with the coloured felt tip against the monotonous, dark toned black fine liner that I have used. I have made this artwork as a poster because I wanted to experiment with how the artwork was presented, and posters often display images and phrases that are revolutionary, which relates to my theme. This artwork is done in the style of pop art because of the theme around historical event that have impacted society and the use of bright colours in my artwork.

First, I choose my topics of revolution, and what I wanted to protest in my poster. I choose the themes of tax the rich, climate change, and black lives matter as one of many others in my artwork. I gathered my posters that I had printed out and then traced the base of the subjects in my poster that I wanted to include, using a 0.3 fine liner. Thirdly I used a 0.5, 0.4 and 0.2 fine liner to include Mark making on the subjects, making sure that the space and chaos of my artwork was balanced by filling up the space with things like flowers and emotive faces. I have used the mark making techniques of line making, zigzag-zag and scribble. I decided to black out some features of the artwork to draw the eye to the lighter areas. Lastly, I Discovered that my artwork was too chaotic to have a clear focal point as there was too many textures, and so I fixed this problem by colouring in some titles in my artwork so that the viewer can understand more easily as to what my artwork means.

In this artwork I have used the technique of symbolism. The flowers that I have traced and textured on the right side of the poster are forget-me-not’s, which symbolise remembrance, so that we don’t forget our beliefs and the problems in our world, and they also symbolise true love, stating that we should spread love and kindness to the problems that we face.

In this artwork I have been inspired by the artist Jason Taylor. I have been inspired by his use of symbolism like in his artwork “untitled” in which the bronze, otherworldly, golden, alienlike figure looks down curiously at the other figure who is partially submerged in the sea water. I like the way that he shows emotion and gives importance to his characters, of which I have used this body language technique to give my subjects emotive body language. I also like his use of symbolism and have incorporated this in the addition of my cartoon styled forget me not is, which symbolise true love and remembrance.

I like the sense of energy that this piece creates, the chaos of this artwork makes me want to act for the problems addressed. I like the body language in this piece, the passionate faces, the fists drawn in this artwork. The artwork is aesthetically pleasing, from the balance of space and texture, black and red shades. I do not like how long this took me. This artwork took me 6 hours because I did not use a larger tip on my fine liner to block in aspects of my artwork. My classmate Devanya says “I like the balance in your artwork but add more red to this artwork” I agree with Devanya and in the future, I will add more red to my artwork.

Society is broken

This is an embroidered piece which I have made by photocopying the Revolutionary poster that I created. It’s made to the size of A3. In this artwork I have used the materials of acrylic paint and red coloured paper. I decided to use the medium of acrylic paint because it fits with the fine liner that I used on the base of this artwork. I wanted a strong, opaque white to make the title of this artwork “society is broken”. I have also used acrylic because it is a flexible, reliable, accurate media that you can use the technique of impasto to make the colour and tones more intense and add texture. I photocopied on white paper because I wanted to tear the base up to go with the phrase I have used “society is broken”. This also gives a visual prompt to this phrase, reinforcing the idea that society is broken, and makes the viewer understand and feel anger towards “the man (meaning capitalism )”.

First I photocopied the work to the size of A3. I photocopied the work to the size of A3 because I wanted to experiment with that size because I have not explored this size as much as what I would like to. I like the detail that you can make with the size of A3 and I feared that if I had made the poster smaller, I would not see all the chaotic textures on the shrunk photocopy. Secondly, I carefully ripped up the photocopied poster, creating a curved, frame like contour to some of the pieces, looking like someone tore it up in anger. I wanted to piece to look like a puzzle not solved because it symbolises that these problems that we face like climate change are the unsolved puzzle of society. Thirdly , I used red as a neat margin, using irony because the artwork is muddled and chaotic , then I painted the phrase “society is broken” in white acrylic paint.

In this artwork I have used the techniques of symbolism. This is shown using the colour red which symbolises anger , the anger and passion for their causes, and blood to play on the phrase “I’ve put my blood sweat and tears into this”. I have ripped up the artwork because I wanted it to be the unsolved problem of society.

In this artwork I have made mistakes. The white acrylic paint along with the technique of impasto have not been opaque enough and has given the impression of being transparent pink, which I would prefer that it would be white, as it would stand out more. The pink, which goes with my theme of warm tones, makes my artwork high energy and inviting . During gluing down my ripped pieces of this artwork, I missed out some pieces. But I like this effect, because then the viewer can tell that something is missing , symbolises that cannot be fixed until we find and solve our minorities.

This artwork has been inspired by the artist Jason Taylor. I have been inspired by the way that his work has been themed around symbolism, like his artwork “ untitled” Which the business men put their heads in the sand which plays on the phrase “putting your head in the sand” , I have used this as an example to make my work, using the phrase “I’ve put my blood sweat and tears into this” to use the colour red effectively. I have also been inspired by the artist Jill Pelto for her high energy works.

I like this artwork. I like the use of the colour of the Ruby red in this mixed media piece, the way that it highlights the focal points of the artwork, that the colour red symbolises anger. The anger is again highlighted in the way that the paper has been torn up into irregular pieces , like this affect. I like the way that I have used irony, the order of the margin, neat and formal, separating itself from the calamity of the dis-orderly collage, the way that it frames the title “ society is broken”. I don’t like the pale white, emotionless background. I asked my classmate Devanya what she thought of my artwork and she said “ I like the texture in this artwork, you should make the pink title brighter.” I agree with Devanya, and in my future works I will make my titles brighter and easier to see.

This is an artwork which was made by photocopying my “Revolutionary poster” that I made. I choose to embroider this piece with acrylic paint because I wanted the text to be clearly visible, because it was hard to distinguish the text in the calamity of this chaotic artwork. This artwork was made to the size of A4. I have chosen to shrink this artwork because I wanted to experiment with a smaller scale poster , I also wanted to see if shrinking the poster would affect the textures and small details of my original “ Revolutionary poster”. I have embroidered this artwork with Ruby red acrylic paint. I choose this because it would appear to have the same qualities as the red felt-tip pen on which I have used in the original . I have photocopied this artwork on a white paper base, which highlights the dramatic, dark textures of the fine liner which I have used in the original.

First I photocopied the original artwork using white paper. I then decided on what I wanted to highlight. I choose to highlight the text of this artwork because, looking back at my previous experiment, “society is broken” , I decided that I would have liked to see the catchy phrases on the protest posters that the people are holding in the drawing, as it feel that it will make my artwork more expressive. I finally used red acrylic paint using a small brush, using the detailing mark making technique.

I have used symbolism in this work. I choose to highlight the words red because red symbolises anger and the people are angry, as are their words, filled with passion like “women's right are human rights” that have featured in my artwork.

In this artwork i have been inspired by the artist Jason Taylor because of his use of symbolism, especially in his artwork called “untitled” in which the businessmen put their heads in the sand, this has inspired me of the use of the colour red to symbolise anger. I have also been inspired by the artist Andy Goldsworthy and his eco friendly materials. This artwork is photocopied on paper from trees that have been sustainably farmed, and the acrylic paint is from a carbon zero factory. The ink is made from natural dyes.

In this artwork, I have made mistakes. I have painted over the edges of the text in the ‘we’ in the ‘we resist’ section on the top of the poster. To fix this , I made the ‘w’ bigger by making the ‘w’ a millimetre bigger all around the letter.

I like this artwork . I like the way that The repetition of phrases like ‘class war’ and ‘tax the rich’ convey a feeling of urgency and importance, making the viewer feel anxious for the problems that we face, but passionate for the cause, this artwork is high energy. I like the way that this artwork is layered, it has a middle ground, fore ground and background, creating an array of textures. I don’t like that the artwork is just red and monotonous, it makes the artwork uninteresting. I asked my classmate Devanya what she thought about my artwork and she said “I like the way the red conveys a feeling of anger, I don’t like that there is no show of shade in this artwork” I agree with Devanya and in will add more shade in future experiments.

Abstract art is the type of art about disfiguration and experimenting with angles, curves, shapes, and dimension. Most Abstract art is conceptual, has meaning. Abstract art is a type of art that has more modern features but has been around for 70,000 years starting with cave drawings in south Africa. I want to experiment with my own abstract art piece, after being inspired by the artist Aldo Tolino, and his beautiful, captivating works.

In this response to the artist Aldo Tolino, I have used the media of biro and paper. It took me 30 minutes to do this paper sculpture. This artwork is in the art style of abstract. I have decided to use the material of biro because I wanted to add the texture and mark making of spirals and waves to be bright and eye-catching, easy to control and easy to add detail thanks to the small, thin lines that it gives. The dark blue ink stands out against the plain, bright white paper, which creates a feeling of intrigue and curiosity in the viewer. In this artwork I have become inspired by the artist Aldo Tolino, and his use of paper in his artworks. I have become intrigued by his artwork called “Cold, hard stare "which was made in 2016. This artwork features a shade and a gradient of colors in a circle, part of a series piece. In this work, I have been inspired by the creases of the paper in this artwork, and how it stands alone. This inspired me to create my own piece that stands alone and add creases to my own work, which adds interesting texture.

I like this artwork. I like the creases of the hanging piece of paper that look like stairs, and the interlocked, textured, chains that I have made. The dark blue stands out against the harsh, bright white and makes the mark making on the chains the focal point of this piece. I think that I could improve on making the tape clear tape, but I did not have clear tape, and masking tape failed to hold the rings together, and so I used packaging tape, which worked and solved my problem, but looked messy. I asked my classmate Devanya what she thought of the sculpture, and she said” I like your paper sculpture, I like the textures on the chains but I think that you should improve on making more creased strips in your artwork to make it look more interesting” I agree with my classmate Devanya and will add more textures and add more creases to my artwork if I do a paper sculpture again in this project.

Climate change has many affects. One of them is flooding. Flooding destroys habitats and homes. This is taken from a photo that I have taken, where the flooding was so bad that there was ducks sitting on the puddle. The Rain had been coming every day for 2 weeks due to climate change. Thus relating to my theme.

This is a response to the artists Jill Pelto. It is based of a image that I took of a flooding field. This artwork took me an hour. It is done to the size of A4. In this artwork I have used the mediums of chalk and coloured pastels on a black A4 paper base. I have decided to use a black paper base because I wanted to show the dramatic shade in this artwork, the spaces between the pastels strokes making the landscape and the features pop. I have not used the medium of pastel or white chalk before I this project, I have decided to use these mediums to experiment and for the chalks qualities of bright, contrasting colours with bold, easy to see strokes. In this artwork, I have included a red line on the bush, that shows the rise of flooding events. This artwork is in the style of romanticism because of the scene of nature as the centre of this artwork.

First, I sketched the base out gently and delicately out with the chalk strokes on the kettle black paper. I then started on the grass. I did small, but firm strokes with the yellow pastel and then framed them with emerald green and hunters' green lines, making a repetitive rhythm. I smudged some of the lines in some places with my finger to make a yellowish backdrop for my dead grass. I then framed the yellow strokes with light and dark green lines, becoming the healthier grass. Thirdly, I did the sky and the river in this pale white, pastel, raw chalk.

This artwork is a response to the artist “Jill Pelto”. I have shown this by the show of the statistic shown in this artwork, which was inspired by her way of incorporating them in her artworks.

In this artwork I have used the technique of symbolism. The colour red symbolises anger and urgency, which I have highlighted the statistic in. This red statistic becomes the focal point against the cool colours of green and the pale boring white. I want the viewer to feel the emotion that the red symbolises, anger, when they see this artwork.

I like this artwork. I like the black gaps between the cool energetic greens alongside the pale white that gives the artwork depth and volume, and the illusion of a harsh, trail light. I like the beige and green grass, at different angles, giving the impression of movement in the wind. I don’t like the unrealistic texture on the bush. I asked my Classmate Devanya what she thought of my artwork and she said “I like the texture of the grass that gives a impression of movement, You should make the texture and dimension of bush more 3D and realistic.” I agree with Devanya and will focus on the dimension in my future artworks to improve and the textures of plants.

Life is a fishtank artwork

Climate change is a problem that we need to address. One of the problems that associate with climate change is flooding. Flooding destroys indigenous islands , habitats and flooding levels are predicated to rise 30 centimetres, which is the same increase over the past 100 years. That’s why I created this artwork, to show the problems of flooding, which corresponds with my theme of climate change.

This is a artwork of a bush with fish living inside because of flooding. This artwork is done to the size of A4. I did this artwork in 30 minutes. It is based of a image that I took of a bush with the leaves not falling of because it is too warm for late September. This is a mixed media piece, using the mediums of charcoal, biro, pencil, coloured pastels and acrylic, using a blue paper base. I decided to use a blue paper base because I wanted the appearance that the bush was underwater. I also decided to use the mediums of pastel and acrylic because they can produce a bright array of colours, which I needed over the dark, dull blue paper. This would give the appearance of light to the artwork, opposing to the dull blue paper that would give the appearance of shade. Thus making my artwork look more 3D. I have used the art styles of contemporary because of the strong subject of protest art that is communicated in this artwork, and because it is shown in a modern fashion.

First, I sketched out the base with a pencil using delicate, gentle strokes, just gently touching the paper , and corrected them with a rubber. I then began with the charcoal. I choose one with a sharp, thin edge to make finer marks, and made striking movements with the stick. Thirdly, I used the brown coloured pastel to add colour to the trunk of the tree, I like the way that the pastel gave texture to the base of the plant, giving a rough look to the bark of the bush. After that, I then used a hunters green and a emerald , vivid green and using the stippling technique with the tip of the brush on the small, diamond and heart shaped leaves. Lastly, I drew and painted the fish, to emphasise the phrase “life is a fish tank” and did the gravel at the base of the tree to look like pebbles of a fish tank.

In this artwork I have been inspired by the artist Jason Taylor. I like his way of communicating symbolism and using well known phrases in his artwork to use irony to address issues like flooding. I have made the base blue to look like it has been flooded, because I was inspired by his underwater artworks to address the issues of flooding. I have played with the phrase “Life is a fish tank” in this artwork like how he played with the phrase “putting your head in the sand” in his artwork titled “Untitled”. In this artwork I have been inspired also by the artist Jenny Kendler , specifically in her artwork titled “whale bells” which directly link to the subject of her artworks because they are made with real whale bones. I like this idea and have incorporated this technique of direct links with the way that I have drawn the bush, with charcoal, because the bush is made of wood, which is what charcoal is made out of.

I like the way that the leaves are bright and are irregularly shaped, making the bush look natural. I like the way that the light is hitting the gravel directly, giving no shade, as to take the focal point to the bush itself. I like the way the fish have different body language, one is defensive, trying to hide from the problem, whilst the other is confused and inquisitive. I don’t like the way that the bush twigs and branches are not reflecting the light source in this artwork. I asked my classmate Devanya what she thought of my artwork and she said “ I like the body language of the fish. I like the blue background but I think that you should make this artwork brighter” I agree with my classmate Devanya and in the future will make my artworks brighter .

Pumpkin photograph

I’m passionate about climate change because of the effects that it causes, like the melting of the polar ice, drought and flooding, and one of the underestimated effects of climate change is the seasonality of plants. When the plants continue to flower, and even produce shoots, and the leaves don’t fall in the autumn, the bees get confused and refuse to hibernate, but the flowers don’t produce new pollen, meaning that the bees and other insects that rely on flowers do not have enough food to last for an extended amount of time. This artwork I have made is in light of my theme, which is climate change.

This photograph is of a pumpkin planter assembled with dead leaves with a blooming rose background. This is a photograph that I have made in 1hr, and the installation is the size of ½ a metre in height and width. I have used alternative materials of a pumpkin, a spider plant, collected dead leaves and feathers and a towel. I have placed the photograph artwork with a wallpaper background of blooming flowers, in the light of flowers still blooming with new buds in autumn. This artwork is made in the style of representational art, and abstract art because of the real world objects used in this photograph and the use of emotional expression and simple shapes to deconstruct my pumpkin face.

First, I drew out the base on the pumpkin with a pen, including a circle around the lid, to which I cut out the top and tore out the flesh and seeds. I began to cut out the pumpkin face, using the shapes of circles and a spiky mouth. I then separated the seeds and the flesh, reusing them to eat so as not to waste the ingredients. I made the top of the hole wider to put the plant inside. I went outside for inspiration after being inspired by the artist Andy Goldberg and found fallen feathers and fallen, dead leaves to frame my artwork and add a fore ground to my work, i also liked the idea of the plant emerging from the dead leaves, which is the circle of life. I assembled this installation against a Ruby red rose background that was flat and smooth and used a white towel as a base to place my pumpkin artwork on. I used a white base so to attract the eye to main aspect of the artwork, the pumpkin planter. I took the photo, using a filter to saturate the colours of the photograph, making the photograph’s hues distorted and more visually satisfying, distinguishing the aspects and elements of the artwork separately, by making the colours of the artwork more contrasting, for this I have used the filter called “Auto-colour” on the photo scanning app called “Adobe scan”. I have used a flash on this photo, a led light. I have used the flash to further dramatize light, colour and shade. I have decided to take the photograph from a standard, full, frontal point of view to make the subject clear to the viewer and to give a good view of all the aspects in this photo.

In this artwork I have used symbolism. In the photo, on the pumpkins face, I have carved the face of a deconstructed, minimal looking monster face. I did this because it is the face of climate change, and because of the ugly effects and horrid implications that it causes, I wanted it to look horrid and ugly, it’s “the monster of climate change” . The facial language of the monster is aggressive , the teeth bearing , the eyes wide open and aware, the eyebrows tilted and frowning, it’s about to attack, the attack on the environment. The roses in the background of the photograph are red, symbolising anger (about climate change) and urgency ( for the time running out for our climate ). I also took the photograph because of the blooming roses, which I have seen and taken photographs in my primary resources , because of the roses flowering late into the year.

In this artwork I have been inspired by the artist Andy Goldberg. I have inspired by his use of organic, eco-friendly materials in his artworks. In making this photograph, I have used a pumpkin, twigs, feathers, leaves which are biodegradable, A cotton towel, wallpaper pasted with eco-friendly wallpaper paste, photographed with a second-hand phone which I have used for 6 years.

I like this photograph . I like the saturated filter that I have used called “auto colour”. It brings out the harsh light and the dark shadows that the flash on my phone has caused. The filter makes the pumpkin have redder, brighter tones that contrast with the beige inner shell, making the edges and curves of the face more visible, making the face scary to the viewer. The filter makes the photo more vivid, giving neon tones. The twigs and the pumpkin give scale and perception to the photograph. I asked my classmate Devanya what she thought of my photograph and she said “I like the saturation in this photograph. I think that you should more items in this artwork to frame your artwork” i agree with Devanya, when using the media of photography, I will add more items that have variety in height to frame my artwork subject.

Graphite stick

This is my first experimenting sketch. I have used a graphite stick as my medium and have drawn it to the size of A2. I have not done a drawing this size before, as I am much more comfortable doing smaller drawings. I decided to experiment with a graphite stick because I wanted to explore more mediums and get out of my comfort zone.

The picture that it was based on is a field suffering from drought because of climate change. The tree to the left is dead.

To create tones in the graphite stick, I pressed down harder to get darker tones with more shade, and I smudged the graphite to get a lighter effect, correcting the smudges this caused with a rubber. I also used the scribbling mark-making technique, compacting this pattern and spacing the pattern to create light and dark tones.

I faced trouble in this artwork when I did the tree in the artwork the wrong side, but I do not think that it makes it look unappealing in any way, so I chose not to rub it out.

I think that the cracks in the earth look like animal print so in my next experimentation sketch I want to change my technique of making the cracked earth because I do not like this affect.

I don’t like how the cloud goes around the tree in this artwork I want the cloud to be in the background, not in the foreground, and this gives that effect, it also makes it look unnatural, so in my next experiment I want to make the cloud by drawing the cloud between the twigs so that it gives the effect of being in the background. I like the way that the cracked earth has the appearance of plenty of tint, the light shining down harshly on earth.

Biro drawing of desert and tree

Biro drawing of desert and tree

This is my third sketch of this image. I decided to use Biro in this artwork because I do like using biro but I haven't used it much in this project, I like the effect that the fragile, delicate, flowing, flexible mark- making that it can produce. Biro is also good for making color pop because of its black monotonous color. This artwork is the size of A5, after the success of the second artwork that I did.

I have used the mark-making techniques of zigzag, scribbling, cross-hatching. I decided to go back to the pattern of the animal print, fragmented looking cracks in the earth because I thought that it looked truer to the image that I was using again. Because of the close mark making with little space, the artwork looks dark and gothic. I like this affect; it gives an eerie feeling to my artwork.

I encountered problems in my artwork when I drew the first hump of the mountain in the distance too high, which means that this artwork is not true to the image and is inaccurate but I think that it draws attention to the background and makes the artwork more scenic, and aesthetical despite being a desolate landscape facing drought.

In this artwork I was inspired by the artist Andy Goldsworthy for his patterns in nature. I used this from my research on this artist to create the repetitive pattern on the floor.

I like this artwork. I like the animal print effect on the floor, it is like a fragmented repetitive rhythm, however it took more time of my 15-minute deadline than I expected. I like how the effect of the thin lines of the biro makes the tips of the tree branches look realistic, the twigs shrink to be thin lines. I like how in the distance I made the cracked earth print smaller to add perspective to my artwork. I do not like how in the biro drawing blobs of ink have come from the pen. In the future, I will use a different pen and use the graphite to add more gradual tone to my artwork because I like that result from the graphite stick from the first sketch.

The Eye of the sun

This is another experiment of a tree in a drought. It is done to the size of A4 to A5. I have done this to the size of A4 to A5 because my previous artwork experiment of the from the same image turned out well as they could be finished, and more detail could be added to the 15-minute deadline. In this mixed media artwork, I have used the mediums of collage, pen, and pencil. I decided to experiment with the medium of collage because I have traced from images to make a collage poster but have not used magazine articles in my work yet in my project. Collage can also give a distorted, abstract effect to artworks, which is what I wanted my work to theme around, thirdly, it can add random, creative textures to your work which you might not have thought of. This art is in the style of surrealism, (because of the unreal symbol of the sun) and expressionism (because of the harsh colors and the emotion portrayed in the artwork). I did this artwork in 15 minutes.

First, I drew out the base of the artwork, the tree, and the background, in light HB pencil. I picked up a fashion catalogue. I found an image with the texture of rough, scaled like lace dress and cut it up unevenly, I also found a background with neat, Parrell-ray like lines, which I also cut up. I cut the images up roughly because nature is not perfect and fitted them in my sketch. I then added detail, using pen to sketch the tree and pencil to shade in the mountain range, to give the appearance of perspective to the artwork. I used the technique of continuous line to make the tree, using little shade on the branches to give the impression of a harsh light. I ripped up the clouds to give a rough, light outline of the paper and make it irregular. Lastly, I used a biro pen to draw an eye on the sun and the quote “the eye of the sun glares at the bare earth.”

In this artwork I have used symbolism. I have used symbolism in the eye because it symbolizes the eye of the viewer, looking down but doing nothing about climate change. I have added the quote “The eye of the sun glares down at the bare earth because it enforces the idea that the eye is the viewer eye and that we are doing nothing about climate change. I want the viewer to feel anxious about climate change and want to tackle action on the problem. Eyes symbolize watching, staring, they can also symbolize a life because of the phrase “The eye is the key to the soul” .I have used the word glare in my quote because glare can mean a hard stare, which is what the eye is doing, or it can mean the sun’s glare, which is what the eye is in the form of.

In this artwork I have been inspired by the artist “Jason Taylor,” and his use of symbolism, particularly in the artwork called “Untitled,” which the businessmen put their heads in the sand, playing with the phrase “putting your head in the sand”. I have become interested in symbolism because of this artwork and that is why I wanted to incorporate the eye of the sun in this artwork and the style of surrealism. I have also been inspired by the artist “Jenny Kendler” and her artwork “Birds watching” in which features many birds' eyes. I liked this artwork and the meaning of the symbol of the eye and so decided to make the focal point of this artwork an eye.

I like the earthy, sandy yellow of the bare earth, the ridged and uneven pattern, to the left, which looks like footprints heading into the distance. I like the texture of the clouds, the lines and the dark , dramatic, stripes giving the illusion of dimension and that the clouds are looming close. I do not like the way that the paper is torn between the leaves, in the future I would have liked to use a dark felt-tip because it is finer to the tip and so would have been more precise. I asked my classmate Devanya what she thought of my artwork and she said “I like the depth and dimension of this drawing, but I think the mountain range should be lighter in shade” I agree with Devanya and in the future sketches of this image I will make the mountain range lighter in shade to make it look more realistic.

Pink faded clouds sketch

This is my fourth sketch. It is an A5 size. It took me 15 minutes to do this sketch. I have used colored pencil and biro pen. This is a continuous line drawing. I decided to do a continuous line drawing because I like continuous lines. This is because you must find new ways of dealing with problems you create to get to another side of the page. During continuous lines, I often discover new textures and look more closely at the original photo for reference. I decided to use biro for continuous line because the lines are finer which means the lines to get to the other side of the page will be more subtle, I also liked the effect from my last sketch of this image, specifically the dark clouds making the artwork feel gothic. I decided to use colored pencil because I wanted to add color to my artwork like in my orange and black permanent marker sketch and make the artwork look more scenic.

First, I drew the ground, and because this is continuous line, I could not do the same animal print pattern, so I swirled and scribbled a cracked earth pattern instead. Upon the tree, I came across a problem where the branches were thicker than what I had done, so I made all the branches thicker and it worked out well. I like the fact that the branches are more flowy and twisty than the trees I drew previously. I have used the scribble technique, and the zig-zag technique in this artwork. I have chosen not to shade the mountain range in the distance because I wanted it to appear as if it has been faded in the distance by fog.

I like how the scribbles of pink pastel Apon the clouds give light and color to the artwork, and the monotonous tints and spaces of white tint and black shade draw the eye to the pink areas. I like the thickness of the curvaceous tree branches; however, I prefer my previous techniques of drawing the tree stiff, making the tree look emotionless and plain, this will add to the eerie feel. I do not like how the mountain range is not shaded and to improve I think that I would shade in the mountain range.

A glass please artwork

This is another drawing from the image that I found from the Internet. It is between the sizes of A4 - A5. This artwork took me 15 minutes to do. I have used the materials of coloured pencil, HB pencil, 6B pencil. I decided to use the mediums of pencil because of the shaded effect of the strokes that it gives. The medium of pencil is predictable and flexible, with many mark making options that you can use. In this artwork I have used the mark making techniques of scribble, zig-zag and curl effect. I have used these techniques carefully, bringing the marks closer together in the clouds to create the illusion of less light and have spaced my markings in the curling technique on the ground to create a harsh light on the earth. I have used the art styles of surrealism and romanticism, because of the use of symbolism and the dramatic natural landscapes in this piece. I want the viewer to feel sad about the scene in this artwork, the phrase “A glass of water please” Emphasises that the environment is begging for water but to no avail, making the viewer feel sorry for the tree and the environment.

First, I sketched out the base lines of this artwork, rubbing out imperfections and lines that where not true to size. Secondly, I used the curl mark making technique to make the cracked ground, this was done using the continuous line technique, I used flowing movements with the HB pencil, stretching the line up and twisting the pencil lines to make the gnarly gothic tree. The third step was to make the clouds, using the scribbling and zig-zag mark making techniques with a 6B pencil. Finally, I decided to include a glass of water with the phrase “ A glass please” because it is like the environment is begging for water, I coloured in the artwork with blue because blue symbolises water, life, and sadness. I did this blue but for the sun, which is the only thing that I coloured in yellow, to be the focal point- the contrast of the corresponding colour of yellow and blue, the cool and warm colours together.

In this artwork I have used symbolism. I have used symbolism in the way that I have coloured in the artwork in blue. Blue symbolises life, as most of our planet is blue, and it also symbolises water and sadness. I have used this colour as irony, because the dark clouds carry water that the barren desert so desperately needs, so much as to beg ‘please’ in the phrase “A glass of water please”. I have used the symbol of the glass because it symbolises something that you would use to have a drink, which is what the landscape and the tree so desperately need. The symbol of the glass uses imagery and helps the viewer associate with having a drink, which helps the viewer to understand the meaning of the artwork. The colour blue symbolises how the environment is feeling because of the drought, giving the sincere a personality and helps the viewer connect with the artwork.

In this artwork I have come across problems. I made the “a” in the phrase “A glass of water please” lower case which does not fit with the other capital letters in the phrase. I like this mistake, because the phrase is the voice of the environment, and nature is not perfect, so the phrase should not be either.

In this artwork I have been inspired by the artist Jason Taylor. I have been inspired by his clear use of symbolism throughout his artworks, like in his artworks “Untitled” in which the business men put their heads in the sand, playing with the phrase “putting your head in the sand”, and his other artwork “Untitled” in which the godly golden figures stare at each other. I have included his techniques in this artwork by using the symbol of the glass and the use of the colour blue that symbolises life and water.

I like this artwork. I like the repetitive rhythm in the patterned ground, the harsh light from the lack of shadow in the artwork, to the dark foreboding clouds that create irony in this artwork. I like how the size of the tree to the size and the background of the mountain range gives a sense of perception and scale of this vast desert scene. I do not like the pastel blue, I would have liked the colours to be bolder, a thicker tip and more opaque, darker colour in the coloured pencil. I asked my classmate Devanya what she thought of my artwork, and she said, “ I like the symbolism in the image of the glass in your artwork, I think you should use dark and light blues in this artwork to create gradients in your work”. I agree with my classmate Devanya and will add more gradients in my colours that I choose, and I would like to experiment with distorted figures in my next experiment.

This is an ink drawing of a tree with snow on-top. This was based on an Ai image that I instructed. It is done to the size of A3. I have done this to the size of A3 because I wanted to experiment after the sketch “graphite stick 15 minutes”, because I was not sure about that sketch, so I am attempting to build my skills by trying again with this size. In this mixed media artwork, I have used the mediums of ink, pen, and pencil, with ink as the main media. I have decided to use the medium ink because I like the bright, flowing sometimes blotchy colors, sometimes so vivid that it gives the idea of abstract and fauvism. Also, ink can be blended, and you can use mark-making techniques. I did this artwork in 1 hour. I have used the art style of fauvism in this work because of the bold brush strokes and the vivid, unrealistic colors.

First, I drew the base of the tree out using a pencil and corrected the lines with a rubber. I then did the bright, neon colors of the light green, setting a base for texture that I would later add. I then added a shade of hunter green to the page, curving and softening the edges of the barriers of the leaves of the tree in clumps, like pieces of a puzzle. I used the dry brush technique to add more texture, creating faded star like imprints on the top of the tree. Thirdly, I painted the trunk of the tree and created a darker shade when I mixed black ink with the brown ink to create a shadow down the left side of the tree. Later, I used the detailing technique to create the grass. Lastly, I added the thin leaf needles on the tree using the line making technique with the biro pen.

I have directed the Ai to produce this image with the instruction of “tree with snow on top but with healthy green leaves.” Because of climate change, flash weather events can happen. The leaves are healthy and green because it is supposed to be summer, a flash weather event has caused this tree to be covered in snow. I did this to make the viewer feel anxious about climate change, I want them to act and understand this problem and so relates to my theme of climate change.

I have been inspired by the artist Jill Pelto who uses some fauvism and abstract qualities in her work on climate change, like in her work below. She uses bright oranges and reds contrasting with her array of patterns. I have used pattern in my artwork with the clumps of leaves that are like pieces of a puzzle, the repetitive rhythm of the straight pine needles. I have also used the bright colors the catch your eye like the artist Jill Pelto.

I like the flamboyant shades of vivid green. I also like the abstract shapes of the clumps of branches. I like the way that I have used the detailing technique to make the viridian shade of the lines of grass. I like the asymmetrical form; the way the use of light and dark greens creates a sense of an intense light source. I do not like that there is no shadow to this artwork, making it seem unrealistic. My classmate Devanya said “I like strong colors, but you should experiment with light and shade and the dimension of the artwork by adding shadow on the grass” I agree with Devanya, and in the future, I will add shadows to my artwork.

Tri-color sunset

This is an artwork called “Tricolor sunset”. It is made to the size of A5, and this is an artwork called Tree Color Sunset. It is made to the size of A5, and it took me 15 minutes to do. I have used the mediums of felt tip colored pen colored pencil, pencil, and biro pen. I decided to use the medium biro pen because I like the fine, detailed, flowing and sometimes stiff mark making techniques that this pen can provide. On my other sketches of this image, I found the biro pen to give dramatic dark tones and light tints, with a gothic feel. Throughout my work, my art-style has been illustrative, and I feel that this image of what the artwork is based on, reflects this. I have decided to use the ideas of the gentle, faded pencil for a transparent like look and the bold felt-tip colored pen that I also have used previously in my artwork “black and orange sketch” for a technique that draws the attention to the irony of the clouds looming above. This artwork is in the style of realism and fauvism.

First, I sketched out the base lines of the borders of the clouds, tree, and the mountain range. I did this so I could get perspective and plan my sketch. I corrected the lines with a rubber and then I started the continuous line technique on the cracked earth. I did this because I like the swirling, curvaceous, winding string-like effect that was also time-efficient for my 15-minute deadline. Using the continuous line technique, I drew the tree, thick, twisting, branches are like claws, reaching for the water that the cloud carries, but is unable to. I then used the zigzag and the scribbling technique again for this artwork for the clouds and made them darker with a pencil. I did the same for the cracked earth to add texture. Lastly, I colored the clouds in that pastel, rosy shade in patches with the colored pencil and added the areas of bright neon orange and yellow with the colored felt-tip pen.

During making this sketch I have been inspired by the artist Jill Pelto. I like her way of bright, obnoxious colors and complementary colors and have used that in my blotches of orange and yellow that penetrate the faded, muted colors of the pencil and the colorless biro pen. I have used patterns in my work in the cracked earth like her, and my image has been inspired by her to-the-point realism subject and art style.

I like this artwork. I like the bright, unnatural colors of the sunset that contrast with the muted rosy shade of the colored pencil. I like the way that the clouds have been made darker with the pencil, and the way that shade has been added to the earth using this technique. I do not like that there is no shadow to the tree in this artwork because I did not have enough time so in the future, I would like to add a shadow to this artwork. I asked my classmate Devanya what she thought of my work, and she said “I like this artwork. I like bright colors, but I think there should be a balance between faded colors and flamboyant colors” she is right and next time I will add more of a balance between faded and obtrusive colors.

I decided to use the same image for this artwork because I like the texture of the floor, and it is a good example of climate change. It is also good to have the same image to directly compare my techniques for exploration of media.

I have used permanent marker in this sketch, and orange felt tip. I decided to use permanent marker because I have used permeant marker before and liked the bold, thick strokes that it gives, the black bold lines making the colour in the drawing pop. I have decided to use orange felt tip because I wanted the focus to be the bright orange light from the sunset reflecting on the clouds, almost making the scene look beautiful. I have used the line making technique, the cross-hatching technique, and the scribbling technique in this artwork. I have drawn the image to be between the sizes of A4 and A5 because I wanted to see what I could do in 15 minutes on a smaller scale. This sketch is done in the style of abstract because of the line making that distorts it compared to the original image.

I like this sketch. I like how the orange contrasts with the black, stiff, strokes of the line making technique in the permanent marker. The mark making makes the artwork look geometric, with the patterns of the cross hatching and the line making. I do not like how the orange marker goes around the tree and to improve I would make the marking of the clod closer to the twigs because it will look more realistic.

Ai is evolving. There have been concerns about new search engines such as “chat GPT” and “Canvas” to create artificially created artworks with their new found creativity .

On one hand, these responses are taking away the use of artists , where employers can use AI to create images for brands instead of the cost of employing. Ai is also more flexible , generating several images and artworks in seconds whilst some work created by a human would take longer.

However, Ai can also be helpful to artists. These images can be used to generate ideas, experiment . They can give tips on a project, help with spelling with written work. If you wanted to try a medium, just type “create a painting” or “create a drawing”. If you were creating a specific artwork, and wanted to know what your artwork would look like, Ai can be very specific, so you could type “Photo of a jacket embroidered with purple love hearts” and it would show you a photo. Ai cannot make fingers or toes , resulting in more or less, but with AI evolving, this will clearly be subject to change.

When I asked Chat GPT what I should do for my topic on climate change, it told me “Explore the topic of forest fires and Its affects on the environment” and so I have created this artwork of a forest fire, the idea taken from the AI image .

This artwork is of a forest fire. The idea was from an Ai image that I researched. The artwork is a size between A4 and A5. It is done in the art style of Fauvism due to its bright, unrealistic colours. In this artwork I have used oil pastel. I choose oil pastel because of its bright colours and since oil pastels cannot blend with each other, making the colours, mark making and shapes pop. In this artwork I have experimented with light, reflecting the light from the background, and making the light in warm, orange, and mustard hues. I have also used dramatic shade on the backs of the trees, making the artwork look dramatic.

I choose this image from my Ai research because I wanted to address the issue of forest fire due to climate change. The forest fire destroy trees that could absorb the CO2 in our atmosphere, lead to animal extinction by loss of habitat. This relates to my theme of climate change. This artwork makes me feel anxious for our climate and nervous as the fire lurks in the distance, the impending danger drawing closer to the lush green landscape.

I was inspired by the artist Jill Pelto in this artwork, specifically by her way of drawing fire, which I have seen in her artworks. I also have been inspired by her dramatic, bright, abstract like colours, the way she uses the use of Fauvism in her artworks on the hairs on her animals, her sometimes unrealistically bright colours and patterns.

I like this artwork. I like the flamboyant, Garish, corresponding colour palette that I have used. I like the way that I have used the oil pastel, creating flowing lines and a faded affect on the mountain range. My classmate, Devanya says “I like the bright colours you have used. In the future, create more shadows in this artwork”. I agree that I should have added more shadows in this artwork. I do not like the lines left on the mountain range from the dark green pastel. In future, I will add more shadows to my artwork and will use more bright colours in my artwork as it has worked well in this artwork.

We are private, sensitive, and a part of society, that is why the idea of being naked is shocking to us. But as humans, we were born this way, born to show ourselves at our raw form. Going nude shows yourself at your most minimal form and allows body language and posture to be expressed that cannot be shown over the cover of clothes. I find life drawing to be expressive, eye-opening to what we really are behind the judgement of what we wear and who we are, to underneath it all, we all are human. I also have chosen to do life drawings in this project because I wanted to explore body language and to experiment with perception and the symmetry that is the human body, I want to develop these skills so that they can be used in my project.

This is my first experimental sketch of the model. I have used the mediums of coloured pastel, felt-tip pen and charcoal. I choose these mediums because I like the textures contradicting each other, the smooth, thin qualities of the felt-tip pen, the grainy, opaque tones of the pastel with the thick edge of the pastel, and lastly, the shade of the thinnest size of charcoal stick, using the fine edge to give delicate and expressive lines. I have chosen to do this artwork on an easel, standing up because the large size of the paper means that on an easel, I can move my hand quickly and flexibly over the paper, and can look at the model and draw at the same time because the model is close to me. The first sketch that I did on this piece of paper I finished before the fifteen-minute deadline in charcoal, so I decided to add more textures, choosing colours that would stand out against each other so the viewer could easily distinguish the different forms from each other.

I like the textures in this sketch, the gravel-like texture of the pastel contrasts with the fleshy pink that is smooth on the white background of the A3 paper. I do not like that on the first sketch of the charcoal that it is not true to her proportion. My classmate Devanya says “I like the textures in this artwork, next time try and get the proportions right” I agree with Devanya and will focus on

This is my second nude sketch. I have used the mediums of chalk, oil pastel, and biro pen. I have decided to use these after the success of my previous nude experiment, “sketch 1”. I like the contrast of the textures, the smooth, navy pen contrasts with the silky, rough effect of the sky-blue oil pastel, the unforgiving not blendable oil pastel curves and straightens around the shape of the body. Then, the tip of the chalk gives a pasty effect, the lines of this medium are grainy, but the tip of the chalk is stiff and smooth, which contrasts with my third medium , the felt-tip, which the ink in the pen is dark in shade, flexible, curvaceous lines that my mark making techniques of line making and contouring stand out against the orange, uninteresting background. The backdrop is near the colour of the model’s skin, filling the inside of the sketches with colour, but the mark making, that pop of white, dark blue and light blue is the focal point, drawing the eye to the twists and turns of the lines. In this pose, the model is hiding her face, she appears to be distracted, in a daydream, her hands, calmly resting on her stomach, she is calm and composed, which gives the feel of calmness to the piece, the space in this artwork is aplenty, but balanced, adding to the feel of serenity. I have done this artwork to the size of A3, I have done this after experimenting in the sketch called “Sketch 1” in which I found on the easel I could move my hand more freely and add more detail to a bigger scale. I had a deadline of 15 minutes on this sketch. I like this sketch, it reminds me of how people ignore, which is what the woman is doing, distracting herself from climate change, turning her head to her own small problems, relating to my theme.

I like the brown background, in which I have not used a brown background before, it gives a calm feel to the viewer. I asked my classmate Devanya what she thought of my sketch, and she said “I like how the woman is ignoring climate change, remaining calm when there is a clear problem. You should add calmer colour pallet to your work in future, like yellow or green” I agree with Devanya and will add more calm colours to my artworks in future.

This is my third sketch of the nude model. I have used the mediums of chalk in this artwork. I have decided to use the medium of chalk after the success of my previous sketch called “Sketch 2”. I liked the grainy sometimes smooth texture that you get by using the edge and the flat top of the chalk and so decided to use it again in this artwork. The chalk that I have used against in the black empty background creates the illusion of a harsh white led light, which makes the sketch dramatic. The lines of the chalk are varied in this sketch, thick but grainy lines give a gradual, toned effect, but the edge that I pressed down hard have a pasty effect, that looks light and weightless, the lines are rigid and straight. The black background makes a focal point from the contrast of the white smudge and line mark making techniques, adding texture to the sketch. The woman is sitting, clenching her hand tightly around the stool, her face distorted, looking upset, her head, looking around, paranoid. The overall feeling of this artwork is sadness, anxiety. This artwork I have done in 15 minutes, to the size of A3.

I like this sketch. I like the body language, the distortion of the face, the quivering of the lip, the wide eyes. I like the proportion of the back of the woman, the study back, the line curving down her spine and the ridged shoulder that I have drawn. I asked my classmate Devanya what she thought of this artwork and she said “ I like this artwork , it reminds me of ‘Les demoiselle d’Avignon’ by Picasso, to improve I think that you should made the proportions of the hand more realistic” I agree with my classmate Devanya and will make the proportions of the hands more true to life in my future artworks.

On this Sketch I have focused on negative space. I have used the medium of felt-tip pen in this artwork. I have chosen to use felt tip pen because it easy to handle and move around the paper, making this medium very flexible. I like how the dark blue pen contrasts against the white paper, allowing the spirals to stand out and fill the space, the focal point. The viewers eye adjusts to the space inside, automatically filling in the negative space of the nude model. It reminds me of a shadow. The spirals symbolise energies, an aura that is blue and purple, the colour of confidence, meaning that the model is confident. We can also see the model's confidence through her body language, her chin up, her back straight, her hand in her hip, she is in a strong, study stance.

I like this sketch. I liked experimenting with negative space and have never used this technique before.

I like the repetitive rhythm of the spirals, making the artwork feel playful, and it does make me feel playful. I asked my classmate Devanya what she thought of this 15 minute A3 sketch and she said “ I like this artwork , the spirals remind me of hieroglyphics, to improve I would add a subtle colour back ground as the white background looks abut boring “ I agree with Devanya and will experiment with pastel backgrounds in future.

Expectation Vs Reality

This is another one of my artworks featuring the image that I found on the Internet, of the desert with the tree,as a secondary resource. It is made to the size of 11 x 5 inches, a rectangular white base. It took me 15 minutes to do this artwork. I have used the mediums of the alternative material of leaves and then coloured pencil, HB pencil, 6B pencil, biro pen. I have decided to use the material of leaves because I was inspired by the artist Andy Goldberg. I have decided to use the materials of pen because it gives delicate thin markings, is flexible and can give flowing and sometimes stiff marks. The use of coloured pencils will help me track the flow of the harsh light and shadows in this artwork. This artwork is done in the style of abstract because of the disfigured but distinguishable forms like the trees in the background on the left side of my artwork.

First, I sketched the outline for the base lines of my artwork, using a HB pencil and a rubber. I then used the biro pen and the continuous line technique and the scribbling technique to make the cracked ground and the twisted tree. I have then added the trees in the background, and the rainy clouds. Finally, I used a coloured pencil, making a muddy, healthy ground for the left side, and a yellowish barren ground for the right side.

In this artwork I have been inspired by the artist Andy Goldsworthy, I have been inspired by his use of eco-friendly materials. My artwork is made from eco-friendly materials. The paper, leaves and glue are biodegradable, whilst the pencils are made from recycled wood and the pen of recycled plastic. I have also been inspired by his use of rhythm through pattern in his artworks. I have used rhythm and pattern in the repetitive rhythm pattern in the precise, orderly fashioned shapes that represent trees on the left area of my mixed media piece.

In this artwork I have used the phrase “Expectation” and “Reality” to describe the Expectation and reality of what climate change does to habitats. The ability to compare the different scenes side to side helps the viewer understand the effects of climate change. The abstract trees in the distance are oval, and are disfigured, and would be hard to indemnify if not for the lines in biro of twigs and branches on the leaves. The use of “...” in the phrase “the tree sits wanting ... waiting” adds suspense to the artwork, emphasising the length of time that the tree has gone without water helping the viewer to further understand the devastating effects of climate change.

I like this artwork. I like the yellowish beige cracked earth on the right side of this artwork, it gives a sense of the harsh light from the warm temperature caused by climate change. I like the way that I have used the leaves to represent far way trees, it gives a sens3 of perception and makes my artwork look more 3d. I do not like the way the lines representing the rain are smudged. I asked my classmate Devanya what she thought of my artwork, and she said “I like the way that you have played with light in this artwork, you should add more emotion to your artwork "I agree with Devanya and will showcase more emotion in my future artworks.

Climate change is an issue that is rejected by society. People still use high-carbon footprint food rather than eating local produce, and changing constantly to new phones, which results in more mining of the rainforest for the rare materials provided. But there is hope. We can change the way we act. We can still save our climate and act in in way that is sustainable and carbon neutral. In this artwork we look at the problem of seasonality of plants, which is caused by climate change.

First, I looked at my primary resources for inspiration. I found the flower pictures to be the most interesting and I thought – this is happening to all the plants, and it came to my realisation that this is a widespread problem that could have a massive impact on our pollinators. I got motivated and decided to use digital media because I thought that my sketch experiments on the ibis art app went successfully. I started with the background. I wanted it to have a calm feel to be ironic, so I choose the colour sage as I also wanted the background to look natural. I began to sketch out the flowers using the ‘Airbrush (triangle)’ feature, marking down where flowers could go and did the marking for where the two ribbons would go and say, ‘RED HOT’ and then ‘ITS BLOOMING AUTUMN.’ I then coloured in the areas and added detail, pressing down harder with my computer pen to create darker lines, and clicking the button on the pen to remove bits that I thought were untidy.

In this artwork I have used the techniques of symbolism. I have used this in the phrase ‘RED HOT’ which describes red, which symbolises urgency, and hot, which expresses the dire emergency that is the temperature increase due to climate change. Red hot is also a command phrase to describe something that is so hot that it is glowing red, my red ribbon that this text is placed upon plays with this phrase, also associating the word hot with the global temperature increase of the climate crisis. This artwork is in the style of romanticism because of the focal point of nature in this artwork.

In this artwork I have been inspired by the artist Jason Taylor and his artwork called ‘Untitled’ in which the businessmen put their heads in the sand, which is a play of the phrase putting your head in the sand. This phrase inspired me to play with a phrase of my own the well-known phrase ‘red hot’ which means so hot that it is glowing red. I have used this to create the red ribbon to which my phrase sits, and for the connotation of climate change.

I like this artwork. I like the faded, blurred, thin lines of the ‘airbrush (triangle)’ pen that I used in the ibis art app. This gives a delicate fragile looking line, that makes the flowers look natural and fresh. The bright colours of the ‘Dip pen (hard)’ make the rosehips and the violets pop against the muted colours palate that I have used in this artwork, and the light that is shining on the rosehips give dimension and create the illusion of light for this artwork. I like that there is a lot of space in this artwork, making the focal point easy to distinguish and makes the artwork feel calm. I want this artwork to make the viewer feel calm but informed about the climate crisis. I think I need to improve on the use of shade in this artwork, as there is no shade in this artwork, making the flowers and the rosehips look unrealistic. I asked my classmate Devanya what she thought of this artwork, and she said, “I like the contrast of the bright red, intrusive, loud, red ribbon with the muted, pastel colours of the flowers and the background, I think that you should add shadows to your digital artwork.” I agree with my classmate Devanya and will add shadows to add dimension to my artwork.

Idea 3 - This is my third idea. This is an idea of the polar ice melting. This idea promotes the melting of the polar ice and will inspire the viewer to take action against climate change. The phrase 'Welcome to the tropics' is irony. In this artwork I have been inspired by the artist Jason Taylor as most of his artworks are featured around climate change and his play with phrases.

This is my draft. I have created this draft using felt-tip pens because they share some of the qualities of the paint that I will use in my final piece, such as the brightness, the translucency, allowing some pencil marks that I have made on this draft to show. In this draft, I have re-used an old coffee Jar one that I will use for my final piece, because I want the piece to be made with eco-friendly materials, in light of the urgency of the climate crisis, reusing materials means that my final piece will have a lower carbon footprint which will help the environment that we live in. This means that it will also relate to my theme.

In this final piece, I want to be authentic and true to my word about the climate crisis, using eco-friendly materials because reducing the carbon footprint in my work will mean that I will be doing my bit to fight against the climate crisis. I do this because we must fight against climate change, and reducing my carbon footprint might inspire the viewer to do the same. I will also use materials with a carbon-neutral footprint, which means that the company uses clean energy, and produces no emissions during the making of the product. I have gathered these materials, as shown in the pictures.

In this project I will need acrylic paint, a paintbrush which I can use from my collage, which are free. This is good because it will be convenient for me because they will be at hand when I need them because I will be making them at collage, in which the materials will be replenished when I have used them, which will help me financially. I will also buy glass paint pens, which will cost £22.00, and 2 sets of LED lights, which will cost £6.00. A fine all-surface POSCA pen of 0.5mm to add detail will cost £3.00 In total this will cost me £31.00. All the materials that I will use will be carbon neutral.

In Summary, the result will be an eco-friendly piece that will promote the issues of climate change, combining the use of glass work and projection, using reused materials and the benefits of free materials.

Climate change is an Urgent Problem. Climate change starts fires, floods riverbanks, and melts the polar ice. This decimates habitats, leads to the murder of animals and wildlife that reside there. Forest fires have increased severity by 50%, polar ice has receded 35% since satellite pictures have been taken. We humans place our minds on our immediate problems that only consider our human race, and forget to look at the bigger picture, about the environment that we live in. We urgently must learn to think of others beyond our human race before it is too late. I want this piece to make the viewer question their way of thinking and their everyday lifestyle, because I am passionate about our warming climate and so have created this final piece to express my fears and teach the viewer about the effects of climate change.

In this piece I wanted to promote the use of reusing, reducing and recycling. I have decided to use the base of three glass Jars, 2 of which were coffee Jars, and the smaller jar was a marshmallow jar, and so normally would have been wasted by throwing away after the product inside was finished. To paint on these materials, I have researched glass paints and decided that glass paint pens where the best option, offering easy control, flowing, sometimes stiff lines, with a 2.0 tip, and bright, translucent colours that lay flat and smooth on the glass surface, making line making and stippling techniques in a bright, warm and then cold colour palate, adorning the smooth surface with patterns and shapes of the expectation and reality of the monster of climate change. These Jars are 229 centimetres tall and 90cm wide. I choose these Jars to reuse because they are made of clear glass, so the patterns that I paint onto the glass will provide a clear, white base for my markings and subjects in my artwork, the base on the sides are flat, apart from the sides which feature a dent of a wave, which adds texture and depth to the piece, creating a border between the back and front. This piece is in the art style of romanticism, because of the scenes of nature, abstract because of the distorted symbols that I have used in the 2nd and 3rd jar, and realism because of the way that I have presented the Jars in a blunt manner, and painted the scenes to be so raw and honest . I have made these Jars to make the viewer feel motivated to help the climate, angry that we are doing so little to help our environment, and sad at learning the facts that I have shown on my graph that shows the increase of forest fire incidents.

First, I cleaned the Jars. After this, I used a POSCA all surface paint pen, 2.0 in size. This small, tipped pen would allow me to mark out the lines and shapes that I would later fill in and add detail with the coloured pens. Then, I began to work on the Forest fire Jar, gradually adding the sketch, then correcting with my finger, smudging away the in- corrections. I then added the orange, and the dots of yellow, and then proceeded to block in a layer of black to be the dark, moonlit, scorched ground. This layer made the colourless, shaded ground contrast with the yellow and orange warm colour palate, giving the effect of a bright light source coming from the flames in this illustrative artwork. I became aware that if I put fairy lights in the Jars that the light would flow out through the clear glass, so I used acrylic paint for the light to bounce off the opaque surface and flow through the painted side that I had made, making a projection, so, I covered the back of the forest fire Jar in acrylic paint and painted the phrase “THE EARTH IS A HOT POTATO” on the back, the warm, bright tones intrude the eye of the viewer and make them feel angry.

Final piece Annotation Part 2

Moving onto the second phase, I began to paint the green, lush scene of the Welsh countryside onto the front of the second jar, using primarily cool tones, making the viewer feel calm and inspired. I used the POSCA pen to add texture to the tops of the trees, using the zig-zag and scribble mark making techniques. To finish off the second Jar, I painted circles to the sides and back of the Jar, So that when the light shines through it will create a polka-dot pattern of a projection. Lastly, I created the third jar, collecting sand and using the organic material of a double – ended twig to represent a dead tree suffering from drought.

In this piece I have used symbolism. I have used symbolism in the phrase “THE EARTH IS A HOT POTATO”. The way of relating a hot potato to the earth is so random that it makes the piece memorable to the viewer, making them think about the meaning of the piece. The association comes from the phrase “Dropped like a hot potato’ , because the earth has just been dropped, uncared for, alone, neglected by us. It also relates to the phrase “couch potato” because the earth is just forced to sit there, not moving, while the effects of climate change happen.

In this artwork I have used comparisons to help the viewer understand the effects of climate change, with the words “EXPECTATION” and “REALITY.” This did not come from my initial ideas, but if decided to do this after looking back on my artwork called “expectation vs reality” in which I placed a serene scene next to a desolate one. The 2nd Jar, of the Welsh countryside, represents what people think the world is like, what they think nature is like. The words are centred on the back of the Jar because we have turned our back on the earth, all while we think the balance of nature is perfect, as shown by the circles painted in the back, which symbolise perfection and wholeness. On the 1st Jar, of the forest fire, the words are painted on the front, symbolising that the problem is right in front of the viewer, easy to see, the words are mis-centred because nature is not as perfect as what it seems.

In this artwork I have made mistakes. One of my mistakes was the fact that some white paint on the 2nd Jar got unto the green hedges in the background of the piece, thankfully, the mistake was a pale, easy to cover and overpower tint, and so after the artwork was finished, I then covered it with the pump function on my dark, emerald green paint pen and you could not tell that I had made a mistake. One key mistake that I had made was misjudging of the light of the LED fairy lights that I had used, I intended them to be harsh, illuminating, a clean white light that could project my paintings onto a wall, something that would bright up a small room, but the fairy light could not project even when I lay them on a pure white table. To solve this problem, I used my torch on my phone, a phone that I have used for 5 years, and shone them through the blank areas of my glass illustrations. They worked better than what I expected, and threw patterns over the room, showing the textures and colours that the translucent paint pens provided.
