Talking Points:

“Robert Mager (1997) argues that for instructional objectives to be meaningful, they must clearly communicate a teacher’s instructional intent and be very specific.” – This statement resonates with the power of a good lesson. If you don’t plan your lesson thoroughly and have a well thought out execution, you could lose the attention of your students and possibly the intention of the message.

“Goals are non behavioral and provide direction for educators, but they do not specify achievement levels.” – When I first read this statement, it was somewhat confusing because I had always identified a goal as an achievement. However, if you reread the quote, it’s providing more insight on what a goal is like more for an instructor. As teachers our work is never completed, but we set goals for ourselves to become better educators and leaders within our school systems.

“Teachers finally break down a unit’s educational objectives into a number of specific instructional objectives used in daily lessons.” - The thoroughness and clarity of the content that you’re trying to teach is important. It ultimately helps you become better organized for the following years to come, and if the information is passed along to other teachers within your grade-level, you need it to be understandable.

  4. “Make sure to use simple language all learners can understand.” - This can be difficult for me depending on the standards that we’re teaching, especially for kindergarten students. They mainly rely on visuals and illustrations to help them understand what is being taught.

Reflection

Reflection:

I thought it was interesting to learn about behavioral objectives and how to create them. It reminded me of my previous teachers who would display our objectives on the board as reminders for what learning target we were aiming for that week. Since I’m a non-traditional teacher with no previous education experience, I have conducted more research on what behavioral objectives are and their importance. To sum it up, it enables us to see the change in psychological behaviors a student has when they take the same assessment during different periods of time (impact or decline of growth). With kindergarten, we’re conducting multiple assessments every week to see if the child is comprehending the material. I believe that if we utilize the behavioral objectives more, then we can easily determine if we need to make adjustments to our lesson to make it more suitable for our students to understand. Behavioral objectives have changed my thinking because it will not only enable us to help our students understand the material, but we can also better our lesson plans to make it more comprehensive.
