Let's say the performance task was to have students complete an end-of-unit project.

As a formative assessment, the teacher may observe students as they work on the project in class, have routine check-ins prior to the official due date, and/or ask students to explain their progress or intentions for their project. The teacher would want to make sure students understand what is being asked of them and have what they need meet project guidelines.

As a summative assessment, the teacher would use a clear rubric to evaluate the completed project. Here the teacher would be checking for knowledge acquisition, seeing if students accurately applied content knowledge to real world situations.
