African Americans did not have the same benefits that white people had, and they were treated differently. One example of this is that they made a lower income compared to white people. Racial segregation affected colored people negatively as well. People treated them unfairly because of their race. From the COVID article, I learned that African Americans are more affected by the COVID-19 outbreak compared to any other race. I learned we are the most genetically similar and fruit flies are actually the most diverse species. We also can be categorized into subspecies because we have not been around long enough. It is more than just race that puts them at that risk, including geography, socioeconomics and health factors. I have learned how racial disparities impact people and their lives across generations, including income, financial stability and schooling opportunities. Yesterday I learned through the PBS race timelines how discoveries made in science, specifically pertaining to sickle cell disease, exposed that it was not linked to race but rather areas that malaria was once commonly found. The article covering the topic of COVID 19 enlightened me on the greater risk minority groups have of catching the virus, an important factor being that minority groups often do not have health insurance and have are more susceptible poverty. There are other ways to determine someone's race. Race can be determined from culture and scientists are still coming up with different ideas on where skin color can come from.
