2025 Seventh Graders: What advice about the Ancestry Project do you have for next year's Civ II Class? Is there anything you know now about the project that you wished you had known from the start?
(Remember: all contributions should be school appropriate and constructive. Avoid self-deprecating comments.) by Ryan Wentzel

Some advice I would give, is to get plenty of information out. Do as many interviews as possible otherwise, you may struggle due to having little information. I also found that finding more artifacts was way easier than putting multiple interviews in as the artifact guideline. Be sure to be detailed, as the more detailed you are, the more accurate the biography will be. Just do your best, and get as many detailed interviews in as you can, and you'll be fine.

Something I wished I knew when I started for the project is just write something you enjoy about the prodject. If you find that a part of the prodgect that you dont like, refine it, Show that the essay is a biography made by yourself with your ideas

My advice to the next seventh graders is don't worry too much. The biography and all other assignments seem intimidating at first, but now that it's over, it was much easier than it seemed. It may be a little overwhelming with back to back projects, but it really is easy once you get the information needed. Just stay on task and don't hold off until the last minute. That's when it gets too hard. It's easier to start early. Don't be afraid to conduct "too many" interviews. There is no such thing and the extra information will be helpful. There also is no such thing as too much detail or other information. This will end up making it easier to write your biography and complete projects.

I would tell them, don't stress out about the project, there's a lot of time to complete it. I would've liked to know that there are a lot of work days for the biography paper. Before I knew that, I was concerned and stressed.

The most important tip I have is to not fall behind. It's not hard to work with the steps in the way it's presented, but falling behind gives you a lot more work quickly. Something I wish I knew earlier was to do as much research as possible early on, even if there is little available.

I think this project turned out great! Most things were done well, whether they were interviews, writing, or compiling ideas. I would say: don't procrastinate about interviewing relatives and write in your free time (really do it, it isn't too bad, actually kind of fun).

If I were to give advice for future kids doing the Ancestry Project I would tell them 3 things. First, I would tell them to not procrastinate. If you have time to get an interview or assignment related to the project complete. Get it done! Secondly, I would tell them to not be afraid to ask personal questions. Asking personal questions will help you get the best information for the biography. Last but not least, I would tell them to find as many pictures as possible! The pictures help tell the story.
