The number and letter pad of a vending machine is used to identify the chosen tea for the customer. The establishment of the specific tea will provide prompt for further action on a separate touchscreen. This process acts as the building blocks for the subsequent complex instructions.

We chose this analogy because the first steps taken in the process of ordering one's tea is similar to the formation of subunits in ribosomes. The initial steps of using the keypad to identify your tea helps trigger further prompt of instructions that will actually initiate the making of the tea. This replicates the action of the nucleoli forming the initial subunits of ribosomes that will come together to actually synthesize the proteins. The processes held by the two mechanisms are quite parallel and both lead to subsequent steps for their processes.

Vacuoles function mainly to store substances. In plant cells, the filled vacuole can add support to the cell as well. The vacuole mainly stores water; however, it can store other materials such as sugars, salts, pigments and toxic molecules. In addition to their storage functions, vacuoles can regulate pressure and water level of cells. This ability will help maintain internal homeostasis of the cell. Specialized contractile and digestive vacuoles exist in unicellular protozoans to rid the cell of excess water and break down nutrients. Vacuoles are present in both animal and plant cells, however they are much more prominent in plant cells.

Vesicles function to transport materials from one place to another. They have a lipid bilayer, allowing these organelles to have a self-contained internal environment. There are four types of vesicles within the cell. These four vesicles are lysosomes, vacuoles, transport vesicles, and secretory vesicles. They all have very important functions within the cell. Lysosomes are described in Section 10. Additionally, transport and secretory vesicles are briefly described in various sections throughout this page. Vesicles also function to support metabolism, enzyme storage, and defence from pathogens. Vesicles are found in both plant and animal cells.

Our group meticulously completed the tasks of the A- criteria for our project. Reiterating our statement in the box above, the unique theme for our analogy forced our group to delve deeper and really understand this subject. We put in extra time to thoroughly examine the functions of the cell before nailing down solid and reflective analogies. After our project was completed to A- standards, we picked a few areas to push ourselves and put out more effort for. There was additional research of vesicles, nucleoli, and composting among other smaller topics necessary for our explanations. We decided to provide further editing and photoshopping of pictures to enhance the visuals of our Padlet. This included labeling to make images more detailed. Our group managed to find a couple of real like analogy media as well. This put us in a position to go out and find a similar vending machine to the one in our project and take videos as well as pictures of it. The last extra task we put upon ourselves was adding an extra section on structural composition of some organelles. This will enhance the learning and understanding of analogies and functions for the viewers. We hope you enjoy our Padlet presentation.

This vending machine has an area to store the discarded and used tea bags for compost. After the tea bags are removed in the initial pathway area, they are sent to the compost zone. Here, the tea bags will undergo multiple processes to encourage the breakdown of this waste. These processes include keeping the zone warm and maintaining the moisture that the bags hold when they first enter. Every 6 hours the tea bags are ground into smaller pieces to create more surface area for bacteria. Also every hour, the tea bags are churned to allow oxygen to reach more of this surface area. Lastly, the organic activator, Super Hot, is added to the mix every 24 hours to encourage rapid decomposition. As service workers come to restock the machine and collect money, the compost zone is cleared.

We chose the compost zone as our analogy for lysosomes because they both function to break down waste and larger materials. Lysosomes breakdown macromolecules into usable subunits and also eliminate waste for the cell. The compost zone preforms a similar function for the vending machine. As the compost zone breaks down and eliminates the tea bag waste through it's processes, it still creates usable materials for the outside world.

The tea bags and the tea cups function to transport and store materials within their innards. The tea bags mainly function to transport the tea components into the water and then to contain the leftover waste for disposal. The tea cup is used to transport the final product for distribution and convenience of the customer. In preforming that function, it also provides support to the overall product and stores a large amount of substances.

We chose the tea bags and tea cups as our analogy for vesicles because they carry out similar procedures and functions. To begin, tea cups and bags maintain a compartment that can easily store materials just as vesicles can. The tea bag represents a general vesicle. The tea bag stores substances and transports substances. A specific example would be how the tea bag contains the tea leaves waste that will be disposed in the compost zone. This is comparable to how vesicles form around toxic material. These vesicles will fuse with lysosomes and will be rid of. This is a direct connection between our lysosome and vesicles analogies relating in both our vending machine and as organelles in real life. The tea cup mainly represents both the secretory vesicle and the vacuole in our vending machine. The cup provides supports of the product for the cell and holds a variety of substances just as the vacuole does. The Golgi apparatus sends off the final protein in a secretory vesicle that will deliver the proteins out of the cell. Similarly, the tea cups hold the final product to be distributed to the outside of the vending machine. These similarities show an obvious connection between the tea bag, cup of our vending machine and the vesicles along with vacuoles of the cell.

The AC adapter of the vending machine takes the electrical current in the standard wall outlet and converts it to the specifications required by the vending machine. This is important as it determines if the machine is getting enough power.

We thought that the AC adapter of the vending machine was a good analogy for chloroplasts. We thought this because the adapter captures the electrical current from the wall and changes it into usable energy for the vending machine just as chloroplasts capture solar energy and convert it into carbohydrates for the cell.

The exterior structure of the vending machine protects the products inside and supports the whole mechanism. Even though the exterior of the machine is a sturdy structure, it still allows bills and coins to enter and the tea products to exit.

We used this analogy because it's functions mirror the cell wall. Both structures protect and support their contents and permit substances to pass through their walls.
