The first example is that Darry slapped him because he was mad at Pony.  He was mad because Pony had insulted Johnny. S.E. Hinton says how hurt Pony is when he gets slapped. ¨Johnny’s eyes went round as though I had belted him.  He slapped me a good one across the side of the head. (Ch. 3)¨ Another example is when he gets out of the hospital he hugs Darry and realizes he loves him.

An example of this is when he changes because Johnny kills Bob.  Another time is when Johnny dies. He shows this when he says, “we couldn't get along without him. We needed Johnny as much as he needed the gang. And for the same reason (Ch. 8).”  He is the protagonist because he is a greaser, and the greasers are the center of the story.

He left the lighters and some kids found them and burned the church down. Pony shows this when he says, “Big deal. I busted the end off my bottle and held onto the neck and tossed away my cigarette. You get back in you car or you’ll get split (Ch. 3).” Another time,  he wasn't thinking and he hurt Johnny's feelings when he speaks badly about his parents.
