The highways were congested as the deadly Category 4 hurricane took a direct aim at the southern U.S.
Irma, even though it has been downgraded to a 4 from a 5,  was still regarded as most powerful in the Atlantic in recorded history. The hurricane brought sustained winds of 155 mph. 
FEMA Administrator Brock Long has said, "Hurricane Irma continues to be a threat that is going to devestate the United States in either Florida or some of the southeastern states." He has warned that parts of Florida are going to be without electricity for days, if not longer, and more than 100,000 people might need shelter.
At a Friday news conference, the Governor of Florida has stated that the Florida Keys will begin to feel the effects of Irma by Saturday morning. All Floridians are to be prepared to evacuate.The storm is wider than the entire state of Florida.

Back in 1974, Mary Ann Becker, 16, was found strangled in her living room, tied to a piano and electrical cord.
