Hannie Schaft was a former student at the University of Amsterdam as a human rights lawyer who later dropped out because she refused to sign a pledge of loyalty to Germany. Hannie was a strong independed member of the Haarlem Resistance Group. She was known as the "Girl with Red Hair". Then later in 1945 Hannie was arrested and killed, 3 weeks before the war ended in Europe. Hannie's last words were, "I'm a better shot" after being wounded by her executioner.

After the chaos, Ms. Oversteegen served as a board member in Truus's organization. (The Legacy of Schaft) However, Freddie "decided to be a little out of the limelight," Pliester said, and was sometimes overshadowed by Schaft and Truus, the group's leader.

"I have always been a little jealous of her becaues she got so much attention after the war," Ms. Oversteegen told Vice Netherlands in 2016.

It was said that the war was a source of pride and pain. A five-year experience that she never regretted, but came to haunt her in peacetime. She was unable to sleep, and sometimes recalled the words of an old battle song that served as an anthem for her and her sister. “We have carried the best to their graves/ torn and fired at, beaten till the blood ran/ surrounded by the executioners on the scaffold and jail/ but the raging of the enemy doesn’t frighten us.”

Sadly, years later, she passes at the age of 92 just a day before her 93rd birthday on september 5th 2018. Leaving a remarkable story to inspire others.

Freddie Oversteegen at the time, was a 14 year old girl who joined the Dutch resistance. Due to some of her features, its as if she was 2 years younger. She would ride her bike down the streets of Haarlem in North Holland, with firearms hidden in her basket, she would walk through the woods serving as a lookout or seductively leading her SS target to a secluded place.

Supposedly, the Oversteegen's most daring act, was that they seduced their targets in taverns or bars, asked if they wanted to "go for a stroll" in the forest and "liquidated" them.

Quoted by Freddie says... "We had to do it ... It was necessary evil, killing those who betrayed the good people." Whenever she was asked how many people she killed, she objected: "One should not ask a soldier any of that."

"Schaft became the national icon of female resistance" Pliester said. Pliester was a martyr whose story was taught to children who were in school across the Netherlands and memorialized in a 1981 movie called, "The Girl With Red Hair" which the title was taken from Schafts nickname.

In 1941 the sisters were asked by a commander with the Haarlem Resistance Group to join. Later they did, but further in the job was when the commander told them they’d sabotage bridges and railway lines and learn to shoot the nazis.

Because Freddie and Truus looked so young, nobody would suspect that they would be the one killing the Nazis.

Their other jobs in the Haarlem Resistance Group included bring Jewish refugees to a new hiding place

One quote from Freddie Oversteegen says.. “We did not feel it suited us,”… “it never suits anybody unless they’re real criminals.” This quote is just basically saying that Freddie and Truus did not agree with the killing and murder, however they had to in order to protect the Jews and other innocent lives.

I chose this song because it was a song that expresses love and appreciation to somebody that has died. Just like how Hannie Schaft died, the Oversteegen sisters dearly missed their partner and created a memorial about her to share her story to the world and show appreciation.
