Should we have only one language in the world?

Before we begin, I’d like to give you some background information about the number of languages spoken in the world. More than 7,000 languages are spoken today.

In addition, the most spoken are Chinese, Spanish, Hindi and Arabic.

I believe strongly that if we had only one language, our lives would be easier. Why should we have to worry about learning multiple languages? We could all speak the same language in the world, travel without problems, meet new people and not worry about our accents or pronunciation. In my opinion, it’s very difficult to learn many languages and speak fluently all of them. Sometimes you forget a word in one language or you can’t remember something in another, it’s difficult for a multilingual person and it could be a challenge.

Speaking a global language is, in my view, a perfect solution. Furthermore, it should be mandatory for all citizens of the world.

Clearly, it’s important to preserve the culture and the official language of each country but, multiple languages could exist as officials, at the same time in the same country.

In conclusion, while the diversity of languages enriches our cultures and identities, having a common global language could simplify communication and make it easier for people to connect across borders. While it’s important to preserve linguistic diversity, embracing a shared language could offer practical benefits for a more interconnected world.

Arantxa Auñon Rubio.

Kids shouldn’t get their first smartphone before the age of 13.

I believe that the biggest problem with having a smartphone before the age of 13 is more about how you use it than having one. Having a phone can afford you to join your parents or your friends and keep contact with them.

The biggest problem is if you let your children go on social media, firstly that can push them to compare themselves to other people, whether if it’s the body or the lifestyle. This can make children disconnected from reality and make them feel bad about their life or hate themselves. Furthermore, young children don’t really realize how the social media can be dangerous. A lot of wicked persons use social media to obtain what they want. That’s why it's a bad idea to let children use social media too early or without giving them this information.

On the other hand, I know that not having a phone or social media can create a separation between you and others. Indeed, if you don’t use it, you can’t understand the reference and it becomes harder to include yourself in a group. My cousin for example needs to use social media, even if she doesn’t want, otherwise she has difficulties making friends.

In conclusion, the way children use their phone is more important than the age at which they have it.

Before we begin, I’d like to give you some background information about animal testing.

Since 2013, testing products on animals has not been allowed anymore in Europe.

Personally, I’m convinced this is really good news, and with all the new technologies, we can test in another way.

I think a lot of people don’t want to make animals suffer, but they don’t really make an effort to change things either.

if certain countries do not want a global law, we can stop the marketing of their products that do not respect our standards.

To help companies that make an effort for this cause we will also tax companies that use animals.

I’m convinced that the easiest way to change this problem is to have a new law that is much stricter than the old one.

Parking Fines: an excessive punishment

I understand that controlling parking is necessary because there aren’t enough spots for everyone, BUT is it really necessary to pay a ticket every time?

I recently went to the city of Sion and parked my car in a "zone bleue." I wanted to pick up my order from a nearby restaurant, which took me about 10 or 15 minutes. When I came back with some delicious food, I saw a ticket on my windshield... I had forgotten to put the "disque bleu."

This leads me to ask: why should we always have to pay for every little mistake? Can't we find another way to differentiate between those who park all day and those who just stay a few minutes? It seems unfair to punish forgetfulness the same way as real abuse.

Moreover, parking rules are not always clear. Sometimes, signs are hard to see, and it’s not obvious whether a spot requires a ticket or not. In these cases, shouldn’t there be a system to remind or warn drivers before fining them? Instead of focusing on punishment, authorities could implement more preventive measures, like notifications or a short grace period.

Finding parking is already stressful enough. A system that distinguishes between abusers and those who simply make a mistake would be fairer and more logical.

Dogs are better companions than cats

Before we begin, I make some considerations on the relationship between dogs/cats and humans.

Firstly, cats are much more independent than dogs, they can take care of themselves, usually they go out alone during the day and come home to eat and sleep. However, they are also affectionate and appreciate cuddles.

Dogs, on the other hand, need more support from their owners, they form a very strong bond with them.

Moreover they are much more sweet by nature and appreciate everything you do for them, for example they are excited just to hear the word “walk”.

Compared to cat, dog is more faithful and friendly to man.

In my experience, I had both a cat and a dog. My cat, Nerina, was out all day and we spent time together in the evening.

My dog, Ciuffo (who sadly passed away about a month ago), spent all his time with us and followed us everywhere.

In conclusion, I think that dogs are better companions than cats.

Should public transports be free ?

I believe strongly that public transports should be free for the young. Between 0 and 25 years old, public transports should be offer by the country. Young people don't have many money because a lot of young make studies or have a little salary. After that, at time, they have a job with a good salary, they can pay for public transports. Besides, Switzerland has very expensive public transports and without subscription, it's very expensive to take public transports only sometimes. For example, a round trip Lausanne-Zurich without subscription and after 16 years old, costs 154.00 CHF.

Personallty, I really want to take public transports more often but the journey is each time cheaper with car than public transports. And it's the same thing for the long journey. It's sad. Studies show that the price is one of the first criterion for the choice of means of transports. In conclusion, public transports could be free for young people or at least, cost less until 25 years old.

We should eat animals with knowing the guilt

I believe that some vegan people protesting to be vegetarian or vegan would make a bad image of veganism. Firstly, they did their choice to be vegan themself for several reasons but then we also have the right to continue to eat meat. In fact, human being needs to eat meat because we are omnivorous and we need the meat's proteins. Secondly, those protesting actions is due to the massive killing of the animals. But we are using animal life to produce new drugs, vaccinations, and perfumery. We are killing those animals for our profit therefore we have to live with these guilt. I agree to reduce animal experiences and improve the farm animal's environment and life condition but to force it to stop is not acceptable.

I believe strongly that we should prohibit people in public area to preserve other people health and comfort. In addition to the pollution, smoking is also a factor. Today, we can find everywhere on the ground a cigarette. For non-smoker, it is inconvenient because of the smell. Furthermore, it could also impact their health because of indirect exposure of smoke, for example: stroke and lung diseases. A study shows in 2022, the percentage of smoking is 4%, because of the price of cigarettes. Furthermore, it smells strong and bad. It can stay longer in your clothes. In conclusion, I we should set up a smoking area next to a lot of places: bus stop or train stations.

Why should Shai Gilgeous Alexander be this season’s MVP ?

Before we begin, I would like to give you some background information about the concept of MVP (Most Valuable Player). This award is given to the best player each season of the American basketball championship. I think I can safely claim that this year, there are two names that resonate in basketball fan’s head for the title: Nikola Jokić and Shai Gilgeous Alexander. Although SGA is competing for his first title, Jokić was already named MVP in 2021, 2022 and 2024.

Now I am going to give you the reasons why I am convinced that Shai Gilgeous Alexander deserves to be named this season. Firstly, SGA is the best scorer of the league with 33 points per game. In addition to being one of the best offensive players, he is also an elite defender with 1.8 steal per game making him the third best stealer of NBA. Not only is he a very complete player, but his team is also currently leader in the western conference and the second-best team of the season. In order to enhance my arguments, when he was first drafted in 2018, nobody was expecting him to become one of the best players in the world nowadays. And yet, the last time a guard had a similar season, regarding the statistics, it was Mickael Jordan in 1988.

Despite Nikola Jokić being a strong competitor, he has won enough titles so we could use some change for once. Subsequently, I strongly believe that Shai Gilgeous Alexander should be named 2024-2025 season’s MVP.

Carla Chiavi

(Data sources : @basketballreference)
