         <description><![CDATA[<div>This was a pamphlet written in 1776 by Thomas Paine. It called for American independence from Great Britain to people in the thirteen colonies. Although the second Continental Congress did not believe the colonies could stand up to British, Paine’s strong words helped encourage them.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>
