My family, every time there's a party, they like to have a Mexican band or Mexican regional group. Everybody is always doing something. Some of us could be dancing, some other of us could be singing with the group or band or my cousins sometimes like to play one of the instruments, if the members of the band or group let them. None of us are the center of attention, not even the group or band. Everybody focuses on their part and the important thing is to have fun. Every time the group or band ends the song we clap to let them know that they did a great job and we also clap to the people dancing because they are showing their satisfaction of the music and that they are having fun.

The only time I had a presentational performance was in high school and elementary school. In elementary school, occasionally, the school would have an event were the kids would have a choir performance. Parents would clap and sing along with us. During my sophomore year in high school, the school were having a Christmas special. From Thanksgiving break to the last week before Christmas break, we spent that whole time preparing for the Christmas performance. We would even stay after school to do dress rehearsal and learn every move we were supposed to do on-stage. The audience would clap, and the choir students were the focus of the event.

In the participatory music I value the time that I have with my family and that I am not performing for other people. I like that I am not the middle of attention. I like that everyone is focused in either dancing, talking, enjoying the music, or singing. From the presentational music, I value the time and effort the conductors, in this case my elementary and high school teachers had. I also value that in both of my experiences there is clapping to show people that they are doing a great job and that they are satisfy with their performances. I value from the participatory music that everybody is having fun and that there's no rule on how you are supposed to sing or dance.

Thomas Turino states in his book that participatory music is the "contributing to the sound and motion of a musical event through dancing, singing, clapping, and playing musical instruments," (Turino, 28) for me, this means that a concert, a party, and a karaoke could be consider participatory music. He also states that in participatory music "people attending know in advance that music and dance will be central activities" (Turino, 29) this is true because every time we go to a party in Mexico, my family knows we are going to have to dance, if we want to have fun. While in presentational music-making Thomas Turino states, "only to comment on it through applause after a piece has been completed" (Turino, 52), this was the thing that occurred in my school performances that the audience would use to show their satisfaction.
Participation:
