The audience for this song appears to be those who are struggling with dark thoughts. I say this because he is speaking about drinking chlorine, a cleaning agent, throughout the song. I think that this symbolizes the dark thoughts through chlorine being deadly if ingested and being cleansed of them through it being used for cleaning.
The purpose of the song seems to be to show Joseph's cleansing of his own mind throughout the process of songwriting.

In the lines "This beat is a chemical", "Venom on my tongue", and "Loving what I'm tasting", we get the feeling of a guilty pleasure. He is showing how he loves using his creativity to create music even though it is like a deadly chemical for him. This connects to the line "Poisonous vibration/Help my body run" which is showing how he sees songwriting as something he needs to function. In the lines "I plan my escape" and "I'm running for my life." give a feeling of fear or dread. This is showing how he in hoping to be rid of the dark thoughts in his mind.

Ethos- Joseph uses his own mind and experience as the basis for his lyrics. The line "But now you double as a papermaker" is showing how his songwriting is now becoming harmful to him, it is making his mind weak like paper. This becomes especially taxing to him because of songwriting being his source of income as well. In the line directly after this it says "I despise you sometimes". This shows how he sometimes begins to despise what he once loved. This also shows his credibility in how he has been going through and experiencing all of these feeling firsthand.

Logos- Joseph doesn't really use logos throughout this song due to it all being based off of Joseph's own feelings and is pretty much exclusively given to us through metaphors and symbolism. I also found an interview where Joseph said "Ned really does kind of represent a lot of things but specifically, I guess you would say it really represents this idea of creativity and trying to take care of it and trying to please it, or appease it,", this information is more or less required to be be able to grasp a good understanding of the meaning behind the video.

This video uses symbolism to show the the meaning behind the song as a whole. The entire first section of the video is made up of the two men pouring what we can only assume to be chlorine into an empty swimming pool. The two men do this day after day in order to finally appease Ned. This is symbolizing the difficulty behind appeasing the needs of a creative mind. In the second section of the video, we see that Ned is finally appeased and it is like Ned has been transformed and is now much more comfortable with being around Joseph and his partner. The video ends off with Joseph sitting in an empty swimming pool and Ned comes over and comforts him.
