Power/Control:
The Mayor has tried to take over Todd's mind, trying to make him think things he shouldn't and trying to control him.
Quote:
"You're the one I couldn't break, Todd. The one who wouldn't fall. The one who stays innocent no matter the blood on his hands. The one who still calls me Mayor in his Noise. You could rule by my side. You could be my second in command. And when you learn to control your Noise, you may have the power to overtake even mine", says the Mayor. Then the words thunder through my whole body. I AM THE CIRCLE AND THE CIRCLE IS ME" (Ness 460).
Betrayal:
This is a major theme in the book because both the Mayor and Mistress Coyle betray Viola and Todd a lot.
Quote:
"He stands up. And looks curiously at the Thrace bomb in his hand. There's a second where it can't be true. There's a second where my eyes can't be seeing what they're seeing, not believing that I know what a bomb looks like by now. She betrayed me--She betrayed me again--And then there's darkness" (Ness 404).
Friendship:
Todd and Viola had an unbreakable bond even though they were split up basically the entire book, but they never gave up.
Quote:
"I barely notice-- My heart has stopped beating-- I've stopped breathing-- Because there she is. In front of my eyes, walking up the steps of the cathedral-- There she is. And my heart jump-starts again and my Noise is ready to scream her name and my pain is disappearing-- Cause she's alive-- She's alive" (Ness 142).

A:
This is a symbol for the Answer. The Answer is what everyone is looking for because they don't want to stay where they are and they want to find a new place to live, instead of where the war is going to be.
Quote:
"But I know what she's counting on. A legend that's been rising, a legend about the Answer. How can the bombs be planted with no one seeing? With no one being caught? If the Answer can do that, could they sneak past armed guards" (Ness 218).
Noise:
This is a disease that the first people caught coming into the New World, where you could hear everybody else's thoughts. Only the men got the Noise, women were just naturally immune to it.
Quote:
"He laughs and laughs. He feels so good some of it actually touches my own Noise, brightening it whether I want it brightened or not" (Ness 385).
Todd's Mother's Book:
This book represents hope for Todd, even though he can't read it because of his thoughts, he always seems to treasure it and he won't let anyone touch it.
Quote:
"I run my hand over the cover of the book like I do every night, feeling the leather, touching the tear where the knife went in with the tips of my fingers. My ma. My ma's words" (Ness 386).

Onomatopoeia:
This device reoccurs in the book quite often, they use sounds to create the feeling of what's happening and how the characters feel.
Quote:
"Mayor Ledger tries to throw the bomb away from himself, releasing it from is hand, and BOOM-- it blasts him into a thousand pieces, tearing out the walls behind him and most of the room we're falling into" (Ness 403).
Repetition:
Throughout the entire book, the Mayor is putting this saying in Todd's head and he doesn't want to hear it at all.
Quote:
"But he's already walking toward me as if we're through talking. And as he passes me-- I AM THE CIRCLE AND THE CIRCLE IS ME. I AM THE CIRCLE AND THE CIRCLE IS ME. Rings through my head, just once, coming right form the center of me, of who I am" (Ness 123).
Soliloquy:
There are a lot of these when Todd talks to the horse he always rides and they kind of talk back and forth with each other.
Quote:
"My arm throbs with every step but Angharrad says boy colt when I get to her and snuffles my face with a wet nose" (Ness 141).
