Cake is always the same texture throughout, while pie is textured differently depending on the ingredients to make it. Cake may be able to easily be decorated, but it lacks differentiality and is too commonly used, whereas pies are easy to completely change texture and can have an elegant appearance with the crust designs, along with the fact that it's not as basic to bring for group gatherings.
