I cut out red and green rectangle cards and laminated them. During my lesson I will ask students if they are ready to "go" (Green cards, move foward in the lesson or "stop" (Red card, I don't understand). This has been very effective and is a quick way to gauge how my students are understanding the lesson.

Students are handed a half sheet of paper with questions like this to do independently after learning about edges and vertices. The 3D solids would be available and students would write in answers but NO names. Then as the article suggested hand the papers back out and let the students discuss the answers as a class to collectively see if the concept of the new vocabulary were clearly learned or not.

First we "think" by pointing to our brains and remind them that thinking is in their head not out loud for this activity. Then we "pair" with our partners, each taking a turn. During "share" students are invited to share what they said or what their partner said. It has increased participation for reluctant students. I use whiteboards all the time to assess math and spelling. At the end of the week we practice spelling using the new spelling pattern that had been taught throughout the week. For example, we just finished learning about 3 new suffixes, -en, -est, es. We start by echoing the teacher, unblending the word, then writing the sound symbols to match the sound. As an exit ticket, I developed a game called Math Flash. Each students gets a dry erase board with a magnetic ten frame attached to it. When I say, show me one than than 8, each student has to quickly draw the dots in each square.
