the fact that he is a ‘six-months pupil’ at multiple farms as an ‘agriculturalist’ shows a parallel with Tess who is also often at one with nature and outside. 

like tess, we also see a rejection of conventional religious ideals from Clare. the fact that he has bought a book containing non-religious philosophies causes his father to become ‘pale and dejected’. He too, is at war with people who want him to conform to the church.

-here it is emphasised that she is a part of nature and hold a lot of power. 
-It is a key moment that Angel and Tess meet in nature,rather than next to a superficial house as it emphasises the innocence of their relationship in this moment. 
-There are, however, moments of foreshadow and destruction which shows the tension of the chapters to come and Tess’ downfall.

Imagery of him being a god-like figure/ an angel, nobody climbs the ladder except for him, he's on his own echelon that none of the others can reach. Also, 'strumming an old harp', imagery of the traditional angel/cherub up above in the clouds strumming a harp or lyre, visible in art history. 

'He preferred to read human nature by taking his meals downstairs'- he is entirely set apart from everyone else, is not defined as 'human nature' himself, but something superior, and physically descends to observe it.

'The conventional farm-folk of his imagination- personified by the pitiable dummy known as Hodge'- Angel has stereotypical, pre-conceived notions of 'farm-folk' as a generalisation. He describes the lifestyle as 'retrogressive and unmeaning' and comments 'Sitting down as a level member of the dairyman's household seemed at the outset an undignified proceeding.' He comes from somewhere superior, ideas of status and Angel defying social conventions to integrate himself with the dairy people. It is evident that he originally generalises them into one bloc.

However, the imagery of one, unvarying 'Hodge' representing the entirety of the dairyfolk then disintegrates, as Angel realises 'men everyone of whom walked in his individual way the road to dusty death'. Tess's reaction to this reveals softness in her character, as Hardy compares her to a tame pet, "with the constraint of a domestic animal that perceives itself to be watched." However, through the language linking to images of weariness and vulnerability, the readers are reminded of Tess's caution. 
Nonetheless, Tess and Angel's budding relationship is filled with promise and possibility.

Hardy also reveals that Tess starts to fit in and feel more comfortable in Talbothays. She works in harmony with her surroundings, and her job seems to come naturally to her, "Tess, like her compeers, soon discovered which of the cows had a predilection for her style of manipulation." Hardy relates her to the other girls at Talbothays, and therefore establishes a comforting environment where Tess can grow and flourish at her own pace. Instead of the scene with Alec’s mother and the birds where she is forced to do something physically challenging for her, these skills come easily to her and she fits in.

-the ‘blood-red stains’ contrast to the ‘snow-white tree’ and foreshadows the murder of Alec, In addition to this, Tess is placed among the light scenery and Angel sees her as pure as this scenery, not knowing about her past. The stains also mark her out as a fallen woman. 
-The ‘cracking snails’ is a destructive moment, and shows Tess’ power in nature in this phase.
