Objective: 
The student will be able to use adjectives to add detail to his sentences.
I Can Statement: 
I can use adjectives before my nouns to write descriptive sentences.

Lesson: 
  1. First the student will do an intake of what he sees in his environment. This will include items around whatever room he is in, such as: desk, chair, bed, window, cat. 
  2. Next, the teacher will prompt the student to write a word to describe each item on his list's appearance, texture, or a feature about it. The teacher will model this with any noun in her own room, such as: Red chair. 
  3. Then, the teacher and student will turn this adjective+object list into sentences about their environment. The teacher will model, "There is a red chair." Another example is, "It is a furry cat."
  4. The student will turn every phrase into a simple sentence. 
  5. We will read our sentences out loud, and discuss how our adjectives would help our readers really visualize the room we are sitting in, even though we may be far apart. 

Assessment 
www.blooket.com (see pictures below) This assessment will present a game-show style quiz where the student will identify what IS and IS NOT an adjective for a given image. The student can earn and steal gold as they go through their questions on their device. The quiz shows the correct answer when the question is wrong, and recycles the questions until the time limit is reached, so the student will have opportunities to correct themselves as needed. Students can access it anywhere as long as they go to blooket in their browser and type in the quiz access code!

Lesson: 
  1. I will project an interesting piece on my student's level on the board that correctly uses periods. I will read the text modeling correct pauses where we find periods. We will discuss the meaning of periods and how they tell us that the writer's thought is complete. The periods separate our sentences and help us understand when one thought is over, and the next thought begins. 
  2. My student will create questions about his text. He will ask his reader about the content he meant to convey in his sentences. An example: He will ask his audience questions about the text such as "Who liked to cook?" If his partner can respond correctly ("Your mother liked to cook.") then the student knows he relayed his information correctly. If the partner cannot answer, then my student knows he has information missing from his paragraph.

Assessment:  
I will take the final paragraph from my student's writing sample and upload it to a collaborative Stormboard page. He will rewrite his paragraph to make sure all the necessary information is present. He will create his comprehension questions about the newly edited paragaph and post them. His partner will access the Stormboard and answer his questions. His partner will also post any follow-ups where my student could elaborate or add more details.

The student will be able to link two contiguous thoughts together using a linking word in order to have more sentence variety in his written paragraphs.

I can tell the difference in meaning for the conjunctions and, but, and or.

Lesson:
  1. For this lesson, I want to teach my student to shake up his sentence formatting by utilizing the conjunction "and." I choose "and" because he has a habit of writing short, simple sentences that are repetitive in form. I do not want to overwhelm him because he is writing on about a first grade level. Due to his writing style and English proficiency, I think with the appropriate scaffolding this is an appropriate "stretch" syntactic skill that I would ideally teach over the course of a week, and circle back to review later in the semester. 
  2. I will teach a lesson on when it is appropriate to use comma "and" as a conjunction. We will discuss how comma "and" with a comma can be used to link two sentences that are about the same topic. An example from his writing would be:
    My brother work every day my mother cook every day.
    My brother work every day, and my mother cook every day.
    Both sentences were about what someone was doing every day.
  3. We will read several selections of two separate simple sentences, then read them combined with comma "and."   We will discuss if the two sentences make sense joined (share similar topic) or do not.
  4. We will discuss how comma "and" can be a tool to make our writing more interesting.
  5. We will compare the uses of "and" with the uses of "but" and "or." 

Assessment: 
I will give my student a sentence such as, "Mary likes soccer." on a colored sentence strip. Every sentence I provide will be on pink sentence strips. He will then add comma and the appropriate conjunction at the end of the sentence with tape or glue, covering the period, in a different color sentence strip. My student will then write his own simple sentence to follow after the conjunction. An example would be:
"Mary likes soccer, but Steve likes basketball."
"Juan likes to cook and enjoy good food."

If he can add the appropriate conjunction and a follow up sentence accurately, he has mastered the skill. 

My goal is not quite for him to produce this form of sentence on his own, but to recognize possibly in an editing process, where it would be appropriate to add sentence variety.
