It is normal to need and want help. There can be very different reasons why parents make use of Early Help.

Reasons can be, for example

• Parents feel overwhelmed

• They have questions

• They have no one to talk to

• The parents are arguing

• There are uncertainties regarding the care and upbringing of the child

That's why early help exists!

You can ask for help directly and at an early stage. The services are all voluntary and free of charge.

Telephone advice

The midwife center advises on:

• Questions or complaints during pregnancy

• In the postpartum period

• Breastfeeding problems and questions about nutrition and complementary foods

• Miscarriages or stillbirths

• Late abortions

• Loss of the child

What kind of mediation is there?

Placement of freelance midwives

The Midwifery Center places freelance midwives from Mainz and the Mainz-Bingen area. It is advisable to contact the center as early as possible for the placement of a midwife during pregnancy.

Arrangement of acute home visits

After a telephone consultation, the midwife center can arrange home visits by a midwife in urgent cases. In an acute situation that lasts several days, it is therefore possible that different midwives will make the home visits. However, these acute home visits do not replace the long-term care of a midwife, but only serve to provide care in emergencies.

U checkups are preventive medical examinations for children from birth to adolescence that are required by law.

• Goal: Early detection of developmental abnormalities, prevention of diseases, monitoring of vaccinations.

• Parents receive the yellow child health booklet (preventive care booklet) immediately after birth.

Important:

• U1–U9: From birth to age 5.

• J1 & J2: Adolescent check-ups.

• In some federal states (including Rhineland-Palatinate), invitations/reminders are sent out to ensure that children attend their check-ups.

• Some check-ups are mandatory, others are voluntary, but all are highly recommended.

Why is it important?

• Early detection of developmental disorders (speech, motor skills, perception).

• Vaccination check.

• Advice for parents (e.g., nutrition, accident prevention, media use).

Within the daycare center, we work as a team to ensure the best possible support for your child. This means that we discuss your child's development with each other as needed. If you wish, you can object to this exchange of information—in which case we will not share your information with other employees.

Child benefit and supplements:

From 2026, child benefit will amount to €259 per month per child.

The child supplement will remain at up to €297 per month.

The immediate supplement will remain at €25 per month per child.

Taxes and childcare costs:

The child allowance will increase to €9,756 per child.

Childcare costs can continue to be deducted from taxes.

Up to €6,000 per year is deductible.

80 percent of the costs are taken into account.

A maximum of €4,800 per year per child is possible.

Single parents receive €4,260 in tax relief.

An additional €240 is added for each additional child.

When children are sick:

Parents are entitled to 15 days of sick leave per child per parent.

Single parents are entitled to 30 days of sick leave per child.

Maximum limits apply for multiple children.

Support for single parents:

Advance maintenance payments remain unchanged.

0–5 years: €227 per month.

6–11 years: €299 per month.

12–17 years: €394 per month.

Housing and social benefits:

Housing benefit will not be increased in 2026.

Citizen's income and social assistance will remain the same.

School supplies will cost €195 per year.

Work and income:

The minimum wage will rise to €13.90 per hour.

The mini-job limit will rise to €603 per month.

If you have to study or work from home while also looking after a child, it can be difficult to concentrate for long periods of time. In such cases, we offer you the option of using virtual childcare. Depending on the offer, this can be either flexible or at specific times. JGU members can use virtual childcare free of charge for up to 10 days per year per child. Registration is done via the pme website. Please use only your JGU email address to register.

Various specialist areas work together here (e.g. doctors, speech therapists, psychologists and therapists) to provide children with comprehensive diagnosis and support.

Possible support for children

• Very little or delayed speech

How do you get an appointment?

As a rule, registration is done via a referral from a paediatrician or ENT doctor. For children, there is also a special social paediatric centre (SPC) for speech and hearing disorders.
