There are often groups for special needs kids, or groups that they will easily adapt to, events on all topics as well as groups for parents. Pediatricians offices are often great resources for parents who are beginning the early intervention journey. We, as an agency, have made presentations for pediatric practices explaining what types of communication issues arise for infants and toddlers, strategies parents can use, and when to actually contact early intervention to seek services for their child. These presentations have helped make physicians more aware of when services are needed, as opposed to always taking a “wait and see” approach. The physicians feel more confident in addressing parents concerns about speech and language development, and counseling them appropriately.

Finding community resources can be difficult in rural areas. Family may live far away from any available programs. We find activities by reviewing local church websites, daycare, and word of mouth about who has a home daycare.

I ask families I work with and network through the community with others I know from work, school sports or church groups about what kinds of care or preschools they or others with preschool kiddos are using or have used in the past. Facebook Marketplace and community bulletin boards are also great resources. I also speak with my coworkers about resources they are aware of to share with my families.

I have found that being in some local facebook groups including town groups and mom groups help me learn a lot about events happening around town and what resources could benefit our community. I also try to attend events that are put on by community organizations both for my kids and as a way to learn about organizations.

I learn about community resources by doing research of my own, following social media accounts of moms, and talking to friends of mine that also have young children. I have attended trainings on new childcare centers in the area and I am always looking for library activities and new playgrounds to check on for my own young children.

Ask, ask, ask!!!! As a grandparent raising a grandchild, I find that parents of similar aged children are happy to share places that their kids love to go to or doctors, dentists, etc. they have had great experiences with or great places to buy things for kids.

I have learned about many community resources through a resource agency head of department with whom I interact with frequently. They do a wonderful job of keeping up on resources because so much is announced to their agency. They love passing along relevant information and they are always happy to touch base if I am looking for something to share what they are aware of. It has been a great resource resource!
