         <description><![CDATA[<div>I always like to use the “3 E” definition of a leader I learned in my early days at UNICEF.</div><ul><li>Someone who Envisions, with a clear, compelling and genuine vision, and sets clear directions -- Someone who knows how to provide a sense of purpose that we can see comes from the heart</li><li>Someone who Energizes, has charisma, builds on success, gives credits to others, honors risk takers, is a role model in loving what he/she does&nbsp; and in respecting his/her values&nbsp; --His/her energy is very communicative, he/she has a positive and solution oriented mindset. He/she gets people motivated,&nbsp; congratulates, understands doubts and shares own doubts.&nbsp;</li><li>Someone who Enables,&nbsp; leveraging the strengths and removing barriers, fostering creativity and new approaches -- he/she provides feedback and feedforward. He/she knows what are people’s strengths and weaknesses. She/he has an open door policy. All this with an inclusive approach, mindful of power imbalances and diversity in the team. &nbsp;</li><li>Norm based leadership in the UN is leadership grounded in UN norms, the UN Charter to start with. Norm-based leadership in UNAIDS, is leadership grounded in UNAIDS core values and norms, including LNOB, promoting human rights&nbsp; gender equality and social justice.</li></ul>]]></description>

We stand for economic and social development, peace and security, the&nbsp; promotion and protection of&nbsp; human rights,&nbsp; gender equality, environment, and many other areas we (as the world) agreed upon in international declarations and agreements  that were adopted by most countries. UN leaders MUST promote and defend these and must be aware and trained to do so.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Norms-based leadership at the UN is leadership that builds on the UN norms and standards mentioned in the UN Chart, so that the UN can fulfill its role of promoting and protecting human rights, gender equality, peace and sustainable development taking care of the environment. The work of the UN is anchored in the norms of international bodies and treaties and its leaders must have the conviction and capacity to promote and defend them.<br><br>This is valid for all instances of the UN, including UNAIDS, whose leaders must have principles established in UNAIDS and anchored in the values of the United Nations.&nbsp;<br><br>In a democratic conception of leadership, not necessarily linked to the hierarchy, any official of the UNAIDS team can in certain circumstances exercise leadership, through charisma, knowledge, vision and capacity to empower others, always based on the norms and standards of the aforementioned UN.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Norm-based leadership: The UN as a body was constituted our member states to reflect certain norms and standards defined the UN charter as well as other international treaties, covenants and conventions to provide and guide certain basic standards, rules and values by which we operate collectively to advance sustainable peace, prosperity, economic development, protection of the environment/planet, human rights and many more. The UN system, thus, ensure that countries abide by these set of values and norms.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>A principled UNAIDS leader is one who embodies and applies strictly the norms and values enshrined in the UN charter to contribute to world peace and people-centered sustainable development and respecting the tenets of human rights principles produces results for all especially the most vulnerable and marginalized people. A principled UNAIDS leader is a conduit by which we achieve the vision of ending AIDS as a public health threat and to realize the vision of zero new infections, zero AIDS-related deaths and zero discrimination.</div>]]></description>

These norms and standards include protecting human rights, ensuing gender equality, fostering peace and security, economic and social progress, environmental stewardship, etc. So, norm base leadership in this context means that any leader is duty bound to defend these right actions, norms and standards in every case.<br><br></div><div>As a principles UNAIDS leader, this will mean defending these norms without fear or favour even when it is difficult to do so especially when it means pushing back against powerful people including governments. It means not turning a blind eye to violations of human rights, inequalities, protecting lives at all cost, alleviating human suffering and ensuring that people are not marginalised.<br><br></div>]]></description>
