Hello there, my name is Irena Sendler. My objective for today is to teach you about my journey, as well as other woman's fight to resist against Hitler. Along with women resistors, there were also men. The main focus point today is going to be surrounding Poland as well as my journey and what was going on in that location. Now, before we transition to another area in this room, I am going to explain to all of you the overall subtopics of Poland. As we go I will explain more about each one of those topics. First of all, as I said before we will be focusing on women in the resistance in Poland so let's start off by explaining more about that. Poland is a well-known country in Europe that once got invaded by Germany or Hitler. You should all know from your background knowledge that Hitler was the ruler of Germany and instilled fear in many. He despised Jews as well as other forms of religion and sent them to concentration camps and then ghettos where hundreds of thousands were killed. The resistance movement is simply the form of resisting against Hitler. There were a very large amount of women that did this throughout their lives while risking their own. Now that you have been introduced to the overall topics of today, it is time to learn a little bit more about me, Irena Sendler. (Moving into first genre).

Genre 1 is going to be a script describing Irena Sendler (The girl I am portraying) and her journey. At the end of this genre, I will be transitioning into the second genre (The timeline) by stating a life lesson that I learned throughout my journey. This is what I am using to transition into my second genre because in the second genre, they will be coming up with a life lesson that fits 3 people on the timeline (It’s labeled which ones they are supposed to do on the timeline).

I was a resistor against Hitler as well as some of my friends. I have a strong belief in God. I believe that everyone gets a decision to make early in their life, and this is to decide whether you would like to be on the evil side, or the good side of God. The Nazis, from my point of view, chose the evil side. However, I wanted to choose the good side. And this is what guided my entire journey. I was a social worker in Poland and I used my job as a social worker to get into the Warsaw ghetto and help children escape. To make myself look more like I fit in, I wore this arm band to look like I was a nurse in the ghetto. This was my goal from a very young age after I was born in 1910. To accomplish my goal I joined a movement called Żegota which was just a large group of resistors that focused primarily on the Warsaw ghetto. I would transfer kids out of this ghetto by placing them in small portable places such as a suitcase or taking them into underground pipes or tunnels that were discussed in Żegota. Once I had possession of a kid or kids, I would bring them to either convent families, other families outside of the city, or to orphanages ran by nuns who could be trusted to care for the children. Sadly, one day I was betrayed by a family and was sentenced to death in prison by a Nazi. However, you may be wondering why I am standing here if I was sentenced to death. Well, one of my friends from Żegota bribed the Nazi who was supposed to shoot me and so I was able to escape. By doing this I saved thousands of children. Throughout my journey, one life lesson that I learned was that generosity pays off even if you are risking something meaningful to yourself. Now that you have learned what I have and have been taught what I have been through, I am going to separate you all into groups. In these groups you will learn about other resistors and will get to know what some men did as well. You will be placed next to a timeline and then I will explain more after all of you are grouped. (Place people at a time line one by one). Now that you are all in your groups, I will explain more about your task. You are all placed at a time line. This is a timeline of resistors and they state information of various people who resisted against Hitler. Now it is critical you listen to the next part or else you and your group will be very confused. You learned a life lesson from my journey, so your task in the next 10 minutes is to come up with a life lesson for at least 3 of the characters in the timeline with your group. You will record them on the paper. You are given sections of a text that will explain each person from the timeline and that is what you will use to come up with your life lessons. Do you have any questions? (Answer any questions). Okay, you may now begin. (Once time is up they will be going into the next genre which is the timeline. The script is just apart of this one so it makes it flow).

Okay everyone. Your time is up and please have somebody in your group hand me your paper. It is time to learn the major part of my journey that steered me to choose the good side. All of this was done with a piece of paper. First of all, I wanted some way to record the names of the people I had saved so I could be able to possibly reunite with them in the future, and also to remember the lives of many people I had saved. To do this, I took tiny slips of transparent paper. On each separate slip, I would write someone’s real Jewish name, and next to it, their Polish name that I gave to them to make their stories more believable. After my journey was over, the Gestapo came to my door in the middle of the night. I had realized that I still had these papers that I wanted to save. So, I threw them out of the window so they could not find them. After I had escaped my sentence of death as you had learned earlier, I took all of these slips and placed them all in two bottles. I took these bottles to someplace that I knew would be safe, and that was the Warsaw zoo. I arrived at this zoo to bury these bottles underneath a tree. Unfortunately, later the zoo was bombed. However, I unburied these bottles and was surprised to see that nothing was missing and the bottles were in almost perfect shape. So now I am going to show you some of the people that I saved and I will just give you a little overview about these wonderful people. Now one of the people she saved was Elzbieta Ficowska. She was taken out of the Warsaw ghetto at the age of six months by me. I placed her on a truck in a wooden box with a spoon engraved with her name and date of birth. I brought her to a Roman Catholic midwife. Another amazing being I saved was by the name of Michal Glowinski. I took this young boy out of the ghetto at the age of eight. She took him through a suitcase into a truck just like Elzbieta. I placed him in a coffin. However, I got pulled over by a Nazi officer. Miraculously, I was able to convince him that this boy was dead and I was taking him to a cemetery. Luckily, he survived and was given to an orphanage. Although one major aspect of leading me to the good side was saving others’ lives, ration tickets could also declare which side someone would take. This is because many would steal these tickets and put them on the black market as you will learn next through this newspaper article… This transitions into the fourth genre.

There were many food shortages during World War II so to make sure that food supply would not run out, the government started rationing food. This was done by giving each person ration tickets that display what the ration ticket allows them to buy, and also the quantity people can buy. However, the government did not just ration food, they started to ration other things such as sugar, meat, tires, gasoline, silk, shoes and nylon. After having these ration tickets out for Many have stolen these tickets from others. People have even raided offices for these these tickets. Some will also be selfish enough to sell them on the black market for money and their own benefits. One person was once punished to death for stealing a ration ticket. The death sentence was passed on Alexander Dejakovic. He used to be a treasurer of the state monopoly in Skoplje. He stole ration tickets for items and food worth thousands of dollars. This is showing how harsh the punishment is for stealing ration tickets and what people will risk to save themselves during this time.

You will each be given the same newspaper articles in each group. With the article, you will be reading it with your group and then you will be staying with your groups and discussing what you just read and how one’s action can impact others. Make sure that you are staying on task because I will be walking around to listen to your conversations. If you’ve discussed the prompt that I have just given you, you can move onto your own topic about the newspaper. You may also make some inferences with your group about this article and what other things you can make a connection to in this article. Make sure you are having conversations that dig deep into the topic you are discussing. Okay, I will hand out these newspapers to your groups and you may begin reading it once you get one. You will have about 10 minutes for all of this. It will be a short read which will give you all about 8 or 9 minutes to discuss what you read. (I will hand out the newspapers and they will start reading as I keep an eye on the clock or set a timer).
