Nanoparticles behave very differently to larger amounts of the same element this plus the fact that their miniscule size allows them to penetrate skin could lead to further internal chemical reactions which could in turn have disastrous consequences. A study in 2004 showed that a fish exposed to fullerenes (hollow, spherical carbon molecules) suffered extensive brain damage and changes to the fish's entire physiology. Other studies have also shown some nanoparticles to have adverse or dangerous effects such as another study in 2004 showing that gold nanoparticles could do move through a pregnant woman's placenta and effect her fetus.
