Manipulation and Controlling the beliefs of Society

A major theme in Unwind is the how well the general public has been manipulated into believing that unwinding is not murder. So much so, in fact, that many religious families choose to tithe their children in order to give 10% to the church. The tithes feel a sense of pride that they are going to be unwound. For instance, when asked how it was to always know he was going to be sacrificed, Lev says to Connor "It's better than going through life without knowing your purpose"(Shusterman 44). Lev condescends Connor for not being a tithe. He has been deluded into believing that unwinding is not murder.

Ignorance is Bliss

A large part of why unwinding is so accepted within this fictional society is due to the majority of people being unaware of what actually happens when a child is unwound. It is advertised as being painless and a great way for a child to continue living in a 'divided state'. When the readers are shown the actual process of being unwound in the novel, we see that this is not the case. A teenager named Roland is unwound is kept awake and aware as his body and mind are slowly stripped away from him. As Roland's brain and soul are taken from him piece by piece, he thinks to himself "I'm still here...I'm still...I'm..."(Shusterman 293). Roland continues to deteriorate until he is dead. Roland's unwinding is included in the novel because he was an enemy to the main protagonist. Even though the reader dislikes him, they still find themselves disgusted at what is happening to him. It is known in that moment that this boy is being horrifically murdered as he lies there awake. We are no longer ignorant to it as society is. The process is terrifying and can only be classified as murder.

Throughout history, there has constantly been instances of something being legal but completely unethical. For instance, slavery was legal for hundreds of years and was a widely accepted thing throughout society. However, through the passing of time and the efforts of people who realized that slavery was a completely unethical process, society came to the conclusion that what they had done was wrong. There are many other instances of society accepting the law as what is just, and the process of unwinding is a prime example. The laws in place also lead to murder of children in this novel. Connor tells Risa a story of how when a baby was storked at his home, his father passed the baby to the neighbor. The whole area repeated this process until eventually the newborn was dead. This instance is another example of why unwinding, tithing, and storking are all unethical practices that lead to murder.

The Immorality of being Unwound

Simply put, Unwinding is murder. The process of unwinding was created after the second Civil War over reproductive rights. The Bill of Life allows for parents to have their children unwound between the ages of thirteen and eighteen. The compromise between the pro-life and pro-choice sides is that, technically, the child does not die. Every single piece of the child has to be harvested and used in some way, With this logic, the majority of people in the novel do not consider it to be murder. It is stated in the novel that "The fact is, 100% of you will still be alive, just in a divided state"(Shusterman 64). This is not correct, however, because a person livelihood rests within their soul. Cutting up children and transferring their body parts and organs to someone else is murder because it takes away their souls.
