While much of the credit goes to Hitler's invasion of Poland, some historians argue that the Japanese invasion of Manchuria was the true beginning of World War II. Japan, seeking raw materials and land, invaded the Chinese province of Manchuria. This event led to a much wider spread desire for countries to expand and obtain power. It also added to the rising tensions between countries.

Despite previously losing an election to become president of Germany, Hitler's popularity led to him being appointed as chancellor by President Paul von Hindenburg. Following the Nazi Party's multiple electoral victories, the pressure for Hitler to be put into a position of power was immense. Even though he wasn't placed into a top position of power, his influence became widespread and his power turned absolute. He ruled Germany as a dictator until his death.

In an effort to stop German aggression, several European countries met with Hitler to make peace agreements. It was in this meeting that they used appeasement and gave up land and resources to Hitler. They had given up the Sudetenland and parts of Czechoslovakia. President Chamberlain was the primary advocate for this policy. There was criticism for Chamberlain's actions at the time and some historians criticize his actions to this day.

Since both Italy and Germany had surrendered, it was only a matter of time before the last Axis power, Japan, would surrender too. However, Japan was slightly stubborn and they wouldn't surrender. This caused the United States to decide to launch two nuclear bombs on both Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Although, historians have argued that these nuclear bombs were not necessary for Japan to surrender but it did speed up the process.
