Ramu, a teenage Dalit, was working in a restaurant for a higher Caste who constantly berated him for showing interest in learning how to read. His boss believed that that Ramu should get used to cleaning up after people due to the fact that he will never have a future. However, a foreigner proved Ramu’s past boss wrong. The foreigner enrolled Ramu in Ramana's Garden, a private institution dedicated to breaking the discrimination because of the Caste System, and took him into his home.

"In my childhood, I was so desperate for learning" - Ramu

Education in India Today

The quality of education in India is quite poor but has been improving since 2007. Since 2007, it has been recorded that there are 1.4 million schools and 7.7 million teachers across the country. Although that is a good thing, there is very little students not graduating: “29 percent of children drop out before completing five years of primary school, and 43 percent before finishing upper primary school. High school completion is only 42 percent” (Urvashi). That's not the only problem though, 4 million children, ages 6 - 11, do not attend school. Majority of the children who attend school now are not on appropriate grade level topics. Only one out of every four can read a simple English sentence and many cannot do a division problem. This is a huge issue for Indians because it will lead to being stuck in poverty and children growing up to be illiterate. Additionally, India still faces many challenges before they achieve standard quality education. For example, there are gender issues due to the fact their is violence against girls for equality.

America is in the process of progressing the education given. Our presidents and the people believe that every kid in American should get their education needed. Starting as preschool that has been a move of $1 billion dollars forwarded so every kid at the age for preschool would be able to go. A program has been created to benefit all kids in over 15 states. In fact, there has been a 200% increase in students that are living in poverty being able to take AP/IB courses and an average of 900 minutes of students in the grades 3-8 being back in classrooms. The American education system has been working on solutions to improve what we already have. Solutions such as developing a plan that sets up more advanced assessments for more advanced learning. America has always been ahead in education compared to India and will most likely always will be. The people of America are constantly working harder everyday to make this the best system there ever has been.

Higher Caste Education versus Lower Caste Education

In India, people are discriminated against through a system that is technically illegal but ever so alive. This system is known as the Caste System. The Caste System separates the people of India through social ranking and no Indian is allowed to move up or down. Because of this system, education between Higher Caste and Lower Caste is separated. For example,in more Southern States of India where upper Castes are located such as Kerala“literacy rates of a remarkable 90 percent” whereas lower Castes such as Dalits are stuck with a 50%. Dalits are one of the lowest standings in the Caste system which is reasonable for them to receive poor education. Attendance for the Dalits are one of the lowest attendances than other Caste groups too: "In the past 6 years, the Dalit’s attendance at school has risen from 64% to 77%." Studies have shown that the reason for such low attendance from the Dalits is because instead of getting an education. children are working on farms in order to support their family. Higher Caste Indians do not have to worry about their children resorting to child labor in order to support their family because their families are wealthy enough to have their child attend a private school whereas middle class and low class Indians have to send their children to a public school.
The Caste System social order.
