Immigrants from different parts of the world such as China and India had poor living conditions.

They lived in cramped houses where there was barely much space. They also had no money to afford big houses which were very expensive during the 1930's.

However now, immigrants do not have any better. They still live in cramped conditions and bigger houses cost astronomous amounts of money.

The living conditions still haven't improved yet.

Chinatown in the past was a very polluted area. The rule of littering was not enforced to the people staying around there and it was not the norm for these people to pick up litter. The environment was also shabby. There were many brothels and gambling dens. They openly sold slaves on the streets too.

However now Chinatown has changed. There are clean roads and brothels had been made illegal.Slaves are no loner ever seen in Singapore anymore. It is a more developed area with array of shops and residential buildings with amenities such as temples and eating places.

So Chinatown has changed drastically from the 1930s and 2000s.

This is a picture of Chinatown in the 1930s.Cramped with shabby houses and litter all around.

The government hasn't improved anything about the living conditions of immigrants.Immigrant workers live in bad conditions and are not treated well.Probably this is not a priority for the government so this issue is ignored.

It is still cramped and not different from the past. A room is shared by probably 40 workers and their beds are all crammed together. They also face eviction by the government as they are not supposed to stay in a room with so much people. Moreover there are no lifts and only staircases. The staircase area don't have light so when the workers are going to their rooms they risk of falling and injuring themselves.

Even official, registered dorms in converted factories, walkup apartments and shophouses are often cramped and overcrowded and "slum-like"

Dirty and cramped sleeping areas with clothes strewn all over, garbage littered over the floor, and cockroaches crawling on table tops.

This was the condition of an overcrowded dormitory in Boon Lay.

Since Singapore has developed rapidly since the 1930s, more tourists visit the country. They come to places such as Chinatown. So as to avoid embarrassing things that can degrade a countries value such as brothels and gambling dens, the government might have abolished them.

Another reason is that Singapore was in its rapidly developing stage. The government would have also wanted Chinatown cleaned up just like other streets so it became changed.

Chinatown has developed rapidly over the years in its living conditions such as in the environment and cleanliness.

The picture below shows tourists buying things from a stall in Chinatown. The streets are now spotless unlike before where it was ridden with litter.
