At the age of 8 Bethany attended her first surf competition. At the age of 9 Bethany received her first sponsorship to Rip Curl. At the age of 10 she started working her way up and scoring high at surf competitions. At the age of 13 Bethany placed 2nd at the NSSA National championships. The same year in October, Bethany was attacked by a shark surfing, lost her left arm. November of the same year, she returned to duck diving surfing. Began surfing again with one arm. At the age of 14 Bethany received many women empowerment awards and an MTV award. At the age of 15, Bethany went to Thailand and helped orphans after the huge Tsunami that hit there. At the age of 17, back to normal surfing, traveled to Indonesia to surf. At the age of 18, won her first competition with the label "a professional surfer". At the age of 19, placed 2nd at the World Junior competition in Australia. At the age of 21, Bethany's movie became the top movie in theaters about her shark attack "Soul Surfer". One day Bethany was out surfing, and a shark bite her whole left arm. She overcame this struggle by getting back to surfing two months after she has the rest of her arm amputated. Bethany got right back into the water not letting what traumatic experience slow her down. She became an inspiration to people all around the world for her determination. Bethany received numerous amounts of letters telling her that some kids has differences and didn't think it was possible to ever do something but watching her surf with one arm, made them believe in herself. Bethany demonstrated bravery by going back in the water 2 months after being attacked and continuing to surf, many would have been scared and never went back in, not Bethany, she was brave. She also showed determination by working day and night to make her right arm strong enough to hold her body support with one arm instead of two. Bethany showed courage as well because of not only using her experience to benefit herself but to show people around the world they can do anything no matter what life throws at you.
