"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others." (Orwell, 134)

Animal Farm follows a group of farm animals, inspired by the words of an elder pig, who rebel against the humans in charge of the farm. They succeed, and they attempt to run the farm on their own, establishing a society based upon the equality of all animals. They call it Animalism, and are set to outperform without human oppression. At first, they do well, even being able to counter an attack from their master, Mr. Jones, who tries to get his farm back. However, tensions arise between two of the pigs, Snowball and Napoleon, both having different plans for their farm. These tensions quickly dissipate, seen in the exile of Snowball by Napoleon. After his banishment, Napoleon takes total control, transforming the newfound "Animal Farm" into more of a dictatorship. This is seen in the use of propaganda(Napoleon is always right!), fear, and manipulation, in order to gain power. Soon, the principles of Animalism begin to degenerate, with the pigs taking up a sense of supremacy, becoming the former humans they rebelled upon. A hierarchy is formed, with the pigs on top looking down on the other animals, like slaves. This tyranny comes to a climax, with the animals realizing that the oppression was the same as before. They see the pigs interacting with the humans, not being able to tell them apart.

The theme of Animal Farm is authoritarian control, supremacy, and deception from the truth. In the farm society, control can be seen as the antagonist throughout the novel. It is first seen through Mr. Jones, who is seen as a villain, who has been exploiting their resources. After the rebellion, they attempt to create a society that is equal, with no singular person being better than the others. However, as time progresses, the pigs gradually start to gain control, using deception in forms of propaganda and fear to govern the other farm animals. It isn't until the end of the book in which the other Animals realize that the control has been passed on to the pigs, who have rung themselves up on the top of their ladder, exerting full control over them. Ultimately, the pigs became the dictating humans they were trying to separate from becoming, thus repeating the actions of their former oppressors.

"If you don't want a man unhappy politically, don't give him two sides to a question to worry him; give him one. Better yet, give him none." (Bradbury, 58)

The story of Fahrenheit 451 is set in a dystopian society, which uses firemen to destroy books, attempting to suppress knowledge and thinking in order to prevent minorities from stepping up. Under their authoritarian control, we are introduced to Guy Montag, a fireman who begins to question his role and values after meeting Clarisse, a curious girl. He starts to look into the censorship and the lack of thinking in his society, secretly collecting forbidden books with the help of a mentor, Faber. Eventually, his wife, Mildred reports him for his possession of the books, forcing Montag to flee the city as he gets chased by the local authorities. After successfully escaping, he's able to find a group of exiled refugees outside the city, who are trying to preserve knowledge by memorizing books. The book's society is similar to Animal Farms, using manipulation and control to silence minorities, which gives them the ability to exert power over them.

Based on the novel by George Orwell, this 1999 live action movie was directed by John Stephenson, starring Patrick Stewart as Napoleon and Kelsey Grammer as Snowball. The obvious difference between the original book and this interpretation is the introduction of the main protagonist Jessie, a dog living on Manor Farm, who in the movie leads a rebellion against the pigs.

This funny cartoon adds a new perspective to the book Animal Farm, showing the pigs reading the novel in front of their farmer, who is looking at the pigs with concern. It jokes about seeing the spread of the rebellion firsthand, as it spread to the other farms. It shows a new texture, where we are able to see the farmers view on the idea of an animal rebellion. This touches on some of the themes of the novel, like propaganda and fear.

Animal Farm and Fahrenheit 451 are both books which share common themes of power, censorship and control, and authoritarian governance. They both explore societies filled with distorted values, with one focusing on censorship of knowledge in an attempt to equalize themselves, while the other attempting to rewrite history, tricking their fellow comrades to obey and conform to the constantly changing society that is slowly growing towards a authoritarian governance. They reveal that power is achieved through the slow manipulation of knowledge and fear, drives both societies to accept the laws and orders of the authority.
