1) Job/Career prospects: There are individuals who may prioritise their jobs/careers and having a stable income as they may be worried about their money security in the future

2) Professional Growth: There are individuals who may prioritise their professional growth in terms of their well-being and personal happiness instead of sacrificing their needs and wants and prioritising their partners/children if they are married and settled down.

3) Saving money/cutting cost: There are individuals who may feel the need to save as much money and view that marriage life is expensive as they need to spend a lot of money such as buying a house, spending money for their children (education), food and living expenses

4) Social Influence: There are individuals who may have peers or families around them/parents who have went through failed marriages or relationships and they feel scared or worried that the same thing might happen to them and may fear to be in a relationship. It can be due to high divorce rates happening around them and this can also result in fear of commitment

5) Betrayal in the Past/Trust Issues: There are individuals who may have experienced lots of heartbreak and betrayal from their previous partners etc and would then feel that its important for them to take a step back and reflect. Gradually, they will start to develop trust issues towards others even if the other person may portray good or trustworthy qualities. Hence, this results in them wanting to be single instead as they feel that it would be safer and less vulnerable to others.

It could be due to the internet causing more and more people to be more reclusive due to preferring online interactions, as they are less accustomed to physical interactions, reducing opportunities to meet others.

Another reason is that due to a reduction in expected gender norms and the sexual revolution, more people, women especially, have developed better expectations and more understandings of what a significant other should be, and are less willing to settle for something harmful

The dissolution of traditional marital norms in more "traditionalist" countries such as China and South Korea have led to parents being more open to their children to lead their lives being single.

Economic problems such as an increased cost of living and deflation in Japan have led to people choosing to remain single as the cost of marriage and weddings in well-educated countries are more expensive.

The increasing expectations of the bride to receive an item of their choice before they are married. E.g. Women want Exotic Diamonds/Penchants/Jewelry that are becoming increasing rare.

Higher rates of education also results in them wanting their significant other to have similar achievements(or even greater).

Due to the LGBT movement becoming more popular, more people are becoming more aware of their sexuality, thus, due to a more diverse range of sexualities, some even not being legal in some countries, results in lower rates of marriages or dating in general as people find it harder to find someone.

Why is there a rising trend of singlehood around the world?

1. Many individuals have a fear of commitment due to their bad experiences in past relationships and hence, stay wary of any future love prospects, resulting in the rise of singlehood.

2. Many individuals, especially females choose to stay single due to misogyny. Misogyny is gradually increasing as it has now become a 'trend' which is led by influential rappers in the hollywood industry who look down on females, as according to them, money can buy anything. Females are now very cautious and stay away from such misogyny causing the rising trend of singlehood.

3. Most individuals now focus solely on their professional lives. Compared to the 20th century when creating families was heavily emphasised, the 21st century has changed the dynamics. Individuals now prioritise their work life and are too busy to attend to their families, let alone find love. Hence, there is a rising trend of singlehood around the world due to their professional lives.

4. Most individuals now do not see any purpose in getting married. If anything, they think of it to be a complete waste of time and resources. Individuals are mostly now in live-in relationships whereby they do everything like a married couple but they just are not married. Millennials and Gen-Zs find marriage to be a backdated tradition which poses as a liability. Millennials as well as Gen-Zs like to shine as an individual personalities. Having a family is not as important as compared to the past. Hence, there is a rising trend of singlehood in the world.

5. The awareness of LGBTQIA2S+ is increasing more than ever, but it is still not enough as a lot of countries still ban same-sex marriage and do not allow individuals of the same sex to engage in sexual activities. This results in individuals having to hide their relationships and making them a secret from their society, and fronting themselves as single people. Hence, there is a rising trend of singlehood due to such rigid fixtures in place.
