Chapter 1: The Stolen Letters

In chapter 1, we meet Violet, Mother, Father, Chole, and Stephen. The story is set in 1920, during WW1, and women cannot vote yet. Violet finds letters from Chole, her older sister, that were hidden by her mother. Chole was sent away by her parnets. She now lives in New York. She is a nurse and drives her own car, and is a "New Woman" which means she wants women to have the right to vote. Violet is upset because her mother hid her letters and misses Chole so much. Her best friend Flossie died 2 years ago from Influenza, or the Spanish Flu. Her brother Stephen is about Chole's age and we don't know much else about him. In the end, Violet is on the banks of Susquehanna River feeling very mad at her parents for hiding the letters.

Chapter 2: The Dying Mrs.Renwick

In chapter 2, Violet and went back home and went to her room, and hid her letters in her bloomers. Her mother asks her letters are, but Violet just lied and said she threw them in the river. The next morning Violet had ran away, to go to New York on a train. On the train she had met Mrs.Renwick. A rude old lady who is dying. She wears clothes like the 1920s, and smells like mothballs. She was very lady like and thinks that all women and girls should take care of their brothers, fathers, and men. She thinks women shouldn't have jobs. Mrs.Renwick had just told her she was sick. Violet felt bad, she had started to be nice. In the end Mrs.Renwick bought Violet 2 Tootsie Rolls.

Chapter 3: Meeting Myrtle

Chapter 3's theme was, "In the most desperate times, have hope, and something good might happen." Violet made it to New York and doesn't know where to go. She's in a big crowd and feels like Alice falling down the rabbit hole. She finally gets out of the crowd and is under the train tracks. She thought the El was falling on her. She then meets a colored girl named Myrtle. Myrtle helps Violet find her way to Henry Street, where Chloe lives. Then they find out Chole is in Washington, D.C.

Chapter 4: Henry Street

In Chapter 4, Myrtle and Violet find Henry Street. They asked a man named Theo where Chloe is. They then find out that Chloe is in Washington, D.C., helping with the right of women to vote. Now they have to figure out a way to get to Washington, D.C..

Chapter 5: Hobie and the Brakeman

In Chapter 5, Violet and Myrtle meet a 12-year-old homeless boy named Hobie. He is very tough. When they get to the train, they meet a brakeman ( a criminal who broke out of prison and works for the train). The brakeman threatens to hurt Myrtle if they don't pay. Luckily, Violet has money. When they make it to Washington, Hobie doesn't go with them. Instead, he wants to go to Florida.

Chapter 6: It All Comes Down To Tennessee

In Chapter 6, Myrtle and Violet are in Washington. They are in a neighborhood called Louse Home Ally with many people of color. They had knocked on a woman's door, and her name was Professor Mary Church Terrell, and asked where the Women's Suffragists were. When they had got to the building, they knocked on the door and a woman answered. When they came in, they met the leader of the suffragists, her name was Alice Paul. They had talked about Chloe, and Alice Paul said that Chloe was in Tennessee.

Chapter 7: Heading to Nashville

In Chapter 7, when Violet and Myrtle had gone downstairs for breakfast, they saw Mr.Martin. Mr.Martin was the man from the settlement houses in New York that they had met. They asked him if they had followed them, and he said no. He just wanted to see if they were still in one piece. Mr.Martin started talking about Violet's parents, and she started to make a scene. Miss Dexter told her to sit down. Violet had sent a letter to her parents via the telegram. Later on, they're in the waiting room at the Union Station. The conductor said that Myrtle had to ride on the Colored train. So Mr.Martin and the conductor fought. Eventually, Myrtle sat on the same train as them.

Chapter 8: In The Jim Crow Car

In Chapter 8, Myrtle was trying to get to the Jim Crow. That is where the colored people's train was. She had struggles going through each door for each train. A conductor had seen her and took her to the Jim Crow. When she got there, it was very crowded. She met an old lady named Mrs. Merganser. She gave her an apple.

Chapter 9: Mr.Martin's Escape

In Chapter 9, Mr. Martin, Violet, and Myrtle are on the train. Violet goes to the colored car to give Myrtle her lunch. She sits down next to Myrtle and greets Mrs. Merganser. Feeling very out of place, Violet decides to leave.

On her way back, she encounters some police officers who are looking for Mr. Martin. Violet claims she doesn't know him. She then goes to find Mr. Martin and informs him about the police. In response, Mr. Martin heads to the side door of the train and jumps off.

Worried about him, Violet searches everywhere for Mr. Martin when they arrive at their destination.

Chapter 10: Red and Yellow Roses

In Chapter 10, in the beginning, it was morning. The Suffragists were cooking breakfast. They were cooking while the car changed trains at Chattanooga, Tennessee. Violet had gone to take Myrtle some food. It was hard to find her because the trains always switch. She found Myrtle on the side of the tracks, waiting to get on the Jim Crow. A woman had tripped on the tracks, and Violet couldn't help but see a condition. Pregnancy. She thought that they would be at home.

A woman gave Violet a red rose.

Chapter 11: Finding Chloe

In Chapter 11, Violet is at the Hermitage Hotel. She is on an elevator with two smelly, drunk men. She then sees women in outfits with yellow roses on. She then saw Chloe.

Chapter 12: Violet Spies

In Chapter 12, Violet woke up feeling hot. She had spoken with Miss Lewis and had some Grape-Nuts for breakfast. After that, Violet went to the train station to look for Myrtle and Mr. Martin. Once she found them, they headed back to the Tulane Hotel. However, the desk clerk informed them that Myrtle could not stay there because she was Black. They then set off to find a hotel that welcomed both Black and white guests.

Chapter 13: Dead Horse Alley

In Chapter 13, no hotel in Nashville would take a white man and a black girl. They couldn't even find somewhere to eat. Then they had gone somewhere else to go, and the boy said they could go in the alley to eat. Myrtle convinced Mr.Martin to let them go there because she was getting hungry. Myrtle doesn't like it in Nashville. They finally got inside a horrible hotel. Chloe had then made Violet a spy for the Suffs. Violet had agreed, and that is it so far.

Chapter 14: Max Bloomstein's Pharmacy

In Chapter 14, Myrtle didn't know what to do after the legislature voted. Myrtle had been trying to keep Mr.Martin out of sight, but Mr.Martin wants to go out. Myrtle is trying to keep him out of sight by putting ideas into his head. Like marrying Chloe or having babies. Mr.Martin told Myrtle that he spoke against the War, and that's why he is being followed by agents. Myrtle thought it was going to be better than that. He also said he could get 20 years. Violet had realized what quorum means. It means having enough members of the legislature to have a valid vote. Then Violet went to Myrtle because Mr.Martin and Chloe were having adult conversations and making a scene. Violet had said that she and Chloe could come visit and stay over where Mr.Martin and Myrtle were staying. Myrtle immediately said no. She would be embarrassed because she's living in a dump, and Violet is living in a nice hotel.

Chapter 15: The Ferocious Mrs.Catt

In Chapter 15, Violet gets dressed for dinner at the Hermitage Hotel. Mrs.Pinckard and Mr.Garlick are talking about Jews. Violet had heard some stuff and had to tell Chloe right away. Chloe had the job to squire a fella named Harry T. Burn. Then Mr.Martin came in, so Chloe danced with him instead. Harry was mad. He was about to dance with an Anti. So Violet danced with him.

Chapter 17: The Hope Chest
