Turnu Măgurele - The small town on the banks of the Danube

The city, today the municipality of Turnu Magurele, was founded in the last century, in 1836, by the edict given by the ruler of Wallachia, Alexandru Ghica (1834 – 1842). The habitation on these lands dates back to antiquity, in this area (community of Ciuperceni) there was a Roman fort from which evidence was taken. In 1960, a monetary treasure consisting of silver coins, originating from the island of Thassos and from Macedonia, was discovered here. The first, with wide circulation in the 2nd century BC, which means that here was a Geto settlement - if with large economic resources, capable of maintaining exchange relations with regions in the south of the Balkan Peninsula.

In the southern part of the municipality, in the Danube meadow, 4 km from the city and 1 km from the confluence of the Olt and the Danube, are the ruins of the medieval fortress of Turnu. The fortress played an important role in the defensive system of Wallachia, especially during the reign of Mircea the Elder, when the ruler raised the shield against the Ottoman threat from the south of the Danube.

This fortress is part, along with those from Giurgiu, Turtucaia and Braila, of a chain of fortifications along the great river.
