The committee, a limited company, the Société Civile Internationale du Canal Interocéanique de Darien, was chaired by Ferdinand de Lesseps. To Lieutenant of the French Navy, Lucien N.B. Wyse, grandson of Lucien Bonaparte, was assigned to explore the Isthmus. Armand Réclus, also a naval lieutenant, was his assistant chief.</p>]]></description>
