1) through sparks workshop , i learn about how much convenient and efficiency technology brought to us one example of it is 3D printing , instead of using a real bone or cartilage , bone and cartilage can now be BIO-printed which is very convenient and useful to patients. something so convenient and useful wouldn't be possible without technology. i also learn more about what engineers really do and the different companies in this industry that do . One such example is continental , they contribute to enhanced driving safely and global climate protection . from the experience i had in paintball through this trip i learn that teamwork and having an well-planned plan is very important this does not apply to paintball but also can be apply in our daily life for example when we are doing project in poly , we can do well only if we have a well-planned plan and a great teamwork and chemistry . upon visiting the coffee factory, i deeply release the fact that one should never under value the hard work of anything , even though i like to drink coffee i would never imagine that there is such a tedious and strenuous process behind coffee bean making. After drinking a slip of the rich and savory coffee , in everything we do we need to put in our utmost effort into it no matter how small it is. to be honest for the bonding activities , i wasnt interested or excited as i did not think that it would be fun as i did not know almost all the people participating in the bonding activities except for my classmates .But to my suprised , without reliasing i was completely immense in the activities and to add on i am very glad i get to know more about the freshmen in the EE division and i even make some friends through this bonding activities from this experience i learn that it's important to try different things as you may not know whether you will like it or not but you can sure that you will enjoy it if you try . In conclusion , i feel that it is always important to try something that you didnt try before.
2) To start of ,i am really happy and glad that Mr Aman conducted a talk for us i really learnt so much from the talk that he conducted . the talk makes me realized that success doesn't happen overnight we have to keep our eyes on the prize and don't look back an perfect example of this is micheal phelps . from being an ordinary person to the most successful olympians in history , there are no short cuts , it all counts down to years or even a life time of preparations and absolute 100 percent dedication. i also realized that it is always important to do more compare to others , you need to spend more time in doing something compare to others , i also strongly believing that actions speaks louder than words . from the poker chip theory that mr Aman told us i understand that no one can determine the number of poker chips that was given to us , only we ourselves can determine the amount of self esteem we have in we . another important thing i have learnt is that choices have consquences , we need to be responsible in the choices we make , for example , if there is a chance for u to have fun and study , we have to be responsible in our choices and choose to study instead of have fun , as we need to be responsible in our choices and we need to understand the fact that every choice we make there is a conseqence . i also learnt an important thing called the Growth mindset and to have a growth mindset instead of a fixed mindset .Instead of complaining and making useless excuses that would not change a thing , we have to accept the challenges and keep our utmost effort in trying to solve the problem.an useful quote was also introduced to ask its "a comfort zone is a beautiful place , but nothing ever grows there " i also learnt ways to increase my self esteem and how important is it to have high self esteem . lastly i have learnt that it is never to late to be successful and to not give up on things easily . one fine example of which is mr Lim Tow Young

1)The first thing I took away from this orientation trip was from the sparks workshop. Whereby I had the opportunity to engage in the facilities to aid a student's learning in Ngee Ann. I was quite surprised that there are many things that are available for the students of Ngee Ann to take advantage of and help themselves in Ngee Ann
The second thing is of the camaraderie quest where I had the chance to bond closely with my coursemates. Sticking through with them and learning the good and bad of my coursemates really helped me to create a bond as a coursemate. Bonding in groups help me realize that good teamwork can go a long way.
The third thing is that of the learning excursion. I didn't realize Malaysia and Singapore relations were deeply interconnected with each other whereby at the veggie farm. There were products that are constantly being exported to Singapore. As for the coffee factory, I had the opportunity to taste freshly brewed coffee and learnt more about the process through making one.
The fourth thing I learnt was that the world was very huge and there were many things to be learnt. Interacting with my teachers has shined a new light on how I approach things as an individual. My teachers were always trying to record and take notes on every little thing that the guide told us. It really is an eye opener
Lastly, the hotel brought us late night bonding sessions to discuss and truly bond with each other. It is something that you couldn't experience if we are still back in Singapore. Staying overnight with your coursemates forces us in a situation where we have to get comfortable with one another. With this our bond is strong and hopefully this will bring us a long way.
2)The key takeaways from the motivational talk by Mr Aman has a lot of things to consider. In a 3 hour talk, Mr Aman went in depth on how we approached life and is not afraid to touch sensitive topics. He gave us 3 real life examples of successful people who never gave up.
He taught us to cultivate a growth mindset and to always find a solution to always do things your way that you like.
He taught us to be more than, to always put in 120% in something. To always strive better than the best.
He also taught us that the event occurring is only 10% and your response is 90% and defines who you are.
Specific
Motivational
Measurable
Action Plan
Realistic
Timetable it
These are the key pointers to help us achieve our goals in life. Mr Aman's speech is truly and eye opener not just for me but for us all in the EE department. Using this i can solve my problems by going through step by step and not rush things.

On the first day we went had traffic jam, i thought it was a bad day to start with but my class decided to play some ice breaking games which lightened up the atmosphere and we got to knew one another better. After that we headed to the bowling arena in the resort and from there more people started to open up and we got to know different sides of each other. The following day we played paintball. we learned about teamwork and how to work as a team and also about perseverance and not give up even though i any one of us were the last one standing. we also learnt about integrity for example if any one of us were shot we had to admit. In the coffee workshop we learnt how to appreciate the hardwork of the workers and not take our lives for granted. In the organic farm i leant that patience is virtue and it doesnt take overnight to grow the crops and the hardwork that was put in to preserve the crops. For the last day it was Mr Aman delivering the speech and i learnt that we had to do more than enough, be unforgettable and unignoreable in order to stand out of the crowd. We have to make active choices and not just go with the flow and add value into our lives. We have to have a growth mindset which is having a way of thinking that allows you to grow. An example is to take responsibility. We also shouldn't have a fixed mindset that blames everyone and everything and complain a lot.

1) The bonding games with the whole division has helped me understand that in the working world, meeting new people all the time in inevitable. So I must be able to present myself correctly and in a positive manner where I can show my true self to others. I also must be able to work well with people that I just met so that we can produce good work, like how I should work well together with my group mates in the game so we have a chance to win. During the trip to the Zenxin farm, I learned that even though the farm started out as a small chicken farm, they discovered new ways to do things and changed for the better, like how I must be like everyday. They also try to educate as many people as they can about the new technology they are using and how they can help the environment even though they might be a small company. The paintball experience helped me to understand that we should have planned a strategy beforehand so that we could have played the game better, in the physical world, we should do the same thing and plan beforehand so that we can do things more efficiently and have better results.

2) The very first thing he talked about already impacted me a lot where he talked about the 3 type of people; less than, exactly, and more than. He used a simple game to illustrate this and made it very easy to understand that many people are under the category of ‘exactly’, but where we should strive to be is ‘more than’. Doing things ‘more than’ you can differentiates yourself from the rest of the people in the same organisation and helps you become unforgettable and also helps you improve the quality of your life as you are always trying to do the best you can. A very important question would be ‘Why do you wake up in the morning?’ To me, your answer to this question can always change but you always need to know that the quality of your answer to this question will determine the quality of your life, and you must always try to make your answer the best that it can be. A quote that I will now always remember would be that ‘Easy does not exist’, and that we must always try our best even though that it may be tiring and difficult to do. Choices always has consequences and one must understand that one always has a choice but you must accept the consequences. The poker chip theory is also very interesting as it shows that you have a choice whether to give yourself one or a million poker chips so that determines your own level of self-esteem. ‘Event + Response = Outcome’ is very relevant to all of us as even when we receive a bad score or get scolded, we must choose our response to the situation and that will result in an outcome where it will determine the quality of our life.

The induction week was a great one overall. It started with me feeling worried and ends with me knowing most of my classmate although we are still not close with one another. With all the activity I have gone through in 5 days I realize that I can actually draw even though it’s nowhere near those professional artists. After dinner on the first day, when we get back to the bus someone suggested introducing our names to everyone which clear my worries on feeling awkward.During the trip to Zen Xin Organic farm, we tried hands-on activity which is making curry puff. When the lady was teaching us how to make one we all thought that is will be easy. However, in reality, almost everyone “fail” in making the puffs it looks totally different from what we expected it to look like. This allows me to learn that simple things that others do may not really be simple it’s just that they spent tons of time practicing to make it perfect and what others seem ti be simple. On the same day when we are participation in the camaraderie quest which allows everyone in EE division to bond I understand that we don’t have to afraid to speak up to students from other classes thinking that they will reject you cause they are mostly friendly people. Also during the games, I learn that sometimes we just need to give up somethings not because we did not try hard enough but simply giving up now may lead to a brighter future ahead. The visit to the coffee factory allows me to feel that we should not take things for granted. The instant coffee that we can get from the supermarket easily consist of the hard work from the workers brewing the coffee beans they stand near to the wok that produces heat which can be feel from the start I entered the factory.

The motivational talk by Mr Aman was really an inspiring one.I was an exact person before he starts the talk however after the talk I want to try to be a more than person. It will be hard and it might also take a long time to change it since that's what I've doing all the years before I attend the talk.He mentioned Michael Phelps about how he spent 5 years everyday training not missing for even one day.I believe I can learn from him maybe not so extreme but just revise the things learn from the lecturer every day and make sure I hand in all assignment before due date. Last but not least I would like to try out different experience to find out what am I really interested in.

Before coming to school, I was nervous but excited. I couldn't wait to make new friends and how poly life is like. I always wanted to try a new way of studying and this is my chance to do so. I was so excited that I could not get much sleep.

On the first day, I was so happy to know so many new friends and my new classmates.I'm also very interested in the Sandbox opportunities. I always wanted to start my own business. Thus, when I realized I can do so with funding provided, I got very happy, so maybe next semester, once I am familiar with poly life I might try the sandbox thing. The Sparks Workshop were also quite interesting. It allowed me to understand more about the opportunities and chances I have. The Engine Room activity is extremely fun. Personally, I enjoy doing things hands-on , so needless to say , I loved the Engine Room activities. It really invoked my interest in the engineering.

On the Malaysia overseas trip, we went to many different places. First, we went to the Zenxin Organic Farm. We were able to see first-hand how the farmers grow organic crops and how they water and protect the crops. For the watering of plants, there was spraying and dripping. I also learnt how multi-croping works. We also went to the Coffee factory. However, I didn't really like it cos I don't drink coffee. But it was interesting as I got to find out about different type of coffee beans.

We also had a Motivational Speech from Mr Aman. From that speech , I learnt several things.

1) Always try to do more than expected

2) Be more than anyone else

3) Put a dent in the universe

4) Easy is never a thing. Everything in the future will be difficult.

5) Choices have consequences

6) Discipline: The 10,000 hour rule

I learnt about the growth mindset. The growth mindset is the mentality to give 100% in everything you do.Alway try to challenge yourself #ChallengeAccepted and no matter what always take responsibility of your actions. I also found out about a very true and important equation:

10%( Event) + 90%(Response) = 100% (Outcome)

It is about how you respond to the event that really affects the outcome. Overall, I learned a lot and it was extremely helpful.

1) Well on the 1st day we did not do much as half of the day we were stuck in traffic waiting to enter Malaysia, but we ended the day with bowling which was much fun as me and my new friends compete to see who is better at bowling. On the second day, we went to an organic farm, where I learn the difference in organic food and food that is not organic, the difference is that organic food is much more natural and they do not use any form of pesticide to keep the insect away instead the just use nets to keep the insect away. I also learn that there is a type of bacteria which is thrown into a dirty pond it will help make it clean the pond and allowing the water to be used for farming. We were given a tour of the farm and one part of the tour surprises me, as I always thought that dragon fruit was grown underground so when I was shown a dragon fruit tree I was really surprise, and I also learn that there is more than one type of dragon fruit. We then form into groups where we learn to make curry puff, at first when we were shown how to make the curry puff we thought that it was very easy, but when we tried making it we realized that it was not so easy after all and we struggle a lot. So we became creative and created xiao long bao and siew mai ‘curry puff’. At the coffee factory I discovered there were two types of coffee, white coffee and black coffee. White coffee is not roasted while black coffee is, we were also given samples to taste. After that we headed for a game of paintball, I was lucky and manage to be the first team to play, at first my team and I did not have any plans to attack so we just blindly attack, this cause my team to lose. But I was given a second chance to play again so this time me and my team plan our strategy and we manage to win, this tells me that we need to plan ahead before we do anything.

2)Some key takeaway from the motivational talk was when he told us the three type of person in the world: the one who would do less than expected, the one who do exactly and the one who do more than. When we were doing this activity I realize that I was part of the group that would just do exactly when people ask me to do and not more, this make me think that if I just continue to do exactly what people ask me to do I won’t stand out at all so I would try to change myself to do more. He also showed us what Steve job said when he was asked why he wake up everyday, his answer was ‘I wake up to make a dent in the universe’. This make me think that I should start changing my mindset as now I still don’t know why I wake up everyday but this question make me think and hopefully able to change myself. Also every choice made have different consequences so we need to think before we do anything, this allow us to assess the situation and see what is the most suitable choice.

During the trip to Malaysia, I bonded closer to some of my classmates. We were able to connect with common interests such as music and other hobbies. My classmates and I also learn to work together as a group during activities like paintball and mass games. I have also learnt about the important NP core values R3ICG – Respect, Resilience, Responsibility, Integrity, Compassion, Gratitude that all students should have. The Sparks workshop was very informative as I learnt more about the opportunities and financial support they offer in developing future projects. The Engine Room exhibition had many interesting and fun activities like the building miniature wind turbine and forming a Bluetooth speaker. It made me more interested to find out more about sustainable energy and creating a more efficient way to save more energy. The trip to the Coffee factory was an eye-opening experience, I did not know that there were many different ways of roasting the coffee beans that will affect the intensity of the flavour.
The motivational talk by Mr Aman inspired me to always think positively about my mistakes by learning from them and using them as an encouragement to do even better in the future. I learnt to be more confident about myself and keep trying to improve on any mistakes. I learnt that it is important to set goals and work towards it continuously. In stressful events, I must learn to have a positive respond in order to achieve a better outcome, “Event + Respond = Outcome”.
Overall, the trip was very a great experience that I will never forget.

Reflective Report
4 Day 3 Night Malaysia Trip to JB was a memorable Induction Trip as I get to bond with the EE divisions as well as our course mate , visit and played activities I’ve never seen or done before. On the first day before embarking off to Malaysia, all of us were attending some talks and rules about the school. I’ve learnt the NP core values R31CIG – Respect, Responsible, Integrity ,Compassion and Gratitude to really do well in studies. Value 1, respect all our lectures and friends that are working with us. Value 2, be responsible in whatever we do – be punctual for class , study and revise our work regularly and be cooperative. Value 3, be resilience. Seek lecturers for help when we really cannot solve our school work. Cultivate good study habits which is studying regularly and no jobs during school/ first semester. Value 4, Integrity. No cheating during examinations and copying other work. Having teamwork with our course/ groupmates, be cooperative and no sabotaging. Value 5 , Compassion. Apply our knowledge and technology we gain to improve the world of livings lifes and having a better world. Extend our helping hand with no discrimination and be more sensitive about people around us. Value 6, Gratitude. We can show gratitude by physical or visible way through words and gesture. Other than the values I’ve learnt, I had learnt that being late for class is considered as absent. That makes me wanting to put more effort in waking up earlier in order to be on time for school.

At the Organic Farm, I’ve learnt and discovered many interesting facts. There is different numbering for soil. 246 – trees in flowering stage, 333 – basic stage and 326 – green plants. There is this EM mud ball that contains soil, sand molasses helps to enrich the soil, neutralize the water. It was started in Japan to clean up polluted area. For the green house, it helps to avoid the rain from entering as it might destroy the crops. There is a yellow sticky tape which will attract the pest in case the insects went into the green house as they do not insecticide the plants. Interesting facts, lady finger helps to reduce blood sugar level and New Zealand spinach is good for constipation. While visiting the organic farm, I was feeling so warm as the sun was very scorching. There were also mosquitoes buzzing around me which makes me felt really annoyed. What I really love there was us being able to visit the rabbits as they were really adorable!

At the Coffee Factory, the first thing I felt was the heat .. I was wondering how the workers survive in the heat for such long hours. The smell of the coffee bean was really strong where my nose was a little bit irritated. After finish walking around the factory, they gave us some free coffee sample to taste. I was really amazed by the taste of it, I think I would rather drink the factory’s coffee than the Old town white coffee drinks. Immediately, I went to purchase three packet of coffee.

The 2 most exciting activities I played was the paintball and Go Kart. It was really a memorable activity as I’ve never played it before and it was a new experience for me. During the game, I felt myself being very competitive as I was so focused in trying to shoot my opponents and over taking them in the race. During the paintball game, I was shot by my opponent while I was walking to the ‘safe house’. Bruise were formed on my arm and it hurts a little however it was a fun experience of getting shot. While driving the Go Kart, I was being splashed by the water on the floor which dirtied my favourite ‘Acadine’ Shirt and my precious face :’) However, I had no regrets joining the fun !

Mass activity on the 2nd night was tiring but exciting as I get to bond with my course mate and made new friends from EE and AVT.

Motivational talk speech by Aman Alhamid was engaging and useful to apply in life. I’ve learnt something that has a meaning behind it of these actions. High five to 5 people and say ‘you are the best’ but there will be 3 different kind of people. Those who do less than 5 – when expectations is applied, they would not met the expectation but only do the bare minimum and complain how it sucks. Those who does exactly – Majority people will be here, and how do they expect to get people to know you. Those who do more than expected will have a strong friendship as when they are having a hard time, they will always give more time which make them stand out even more. Example , foreigner worker always work more than expected as they dare to take hardships. Ask yourself how can you do more than expected? ( This would definitely give you a better future as there are high in competition in Singapore) Steve job impactful words.. Why do you wake up in the morning? Steve jobs said ‘ to give a dent on the universe’ . He wants to change what’s normal.
Another point that was impactful was the ‘power of growth mind set’ – having the will of thinking that will allow you to grow. Accept challenges and take responsibility. Give your 100% when challenges r accepted and seeing things differently. A quote ‘’ a comfort zone is beautiful place but nothing ever grows there’.

REFLECTIVE REPORT:
This trip to Malaysia was really a memorable trip as I get to visit a coffee factory and also an organic farm which I might not even have a chance to go to. The trip to ZenXin Organic farm taught me a lot about gardening. Gardening isn't as easy as what I thought, its not just about watering plants and giving them ample amount of sunlight. Its also about knowing the plants and getting to know what type of soil is suitable to plant certain types of plants, conditions the plant needs to be able to survive and also in an organic farm, pest is a major problem as well. Theres different ways to counter pest problem such crop rotation and sticky bright tapes to attract pest. Learning about all these actually made me feel guilty for all the vegetables that I threw away just because I dont like to eat vegetables. Through these, it also taught me to be more meticulous as to achieve what we want to achieve at the end of the day, we have to put in effort and take note of each and every small details. Whereas the coffee factory visit makes me feel that nothing in life comes easy even for things as small as a coffee bean needs to be roasted under high temperature while stirring. This makes me feel that which ever profession is a noble one. As for the people working in the coffee factory, they have to withstand the harsh working condition. As I walk pass machine that they use to roast the coffee beans, I was already sweating profusely I really admire the people working there. Because if its not for them, we might not have coffee to drink. The activities such as paintball and gokart was an overwhelming experience for me as it was my first time trying out gokart and its amazing!
Motivational talk on the 3rd day really change my perspective of viewing things. I used to feel like a aimless fly just wasting my days away not knowing my aim in life and having no motivation to get out of bed in the morning. During the talk, I have thought a lot about what is my dream? What makes me wake up in the morning? What I aspire to be? After the talk, I actually thought of what I want to do and why. Overall, the motivational talk was the most inspiring one.

I learnt that understanding and accepting each other flaws is very important, this is then how friendship is forged when we accept each others' differences. Firstly, Sparks Workshop made me think that it requires the group to think together and solve the problems given like making of windmills and making the sound out of the radio. Which made me learn that I need my groupmates around my side to assist me as I wouldn’t be able to do it all alone. Secondly the Camaraderie Quest, I like it a lot as I get to know my new classmates through all these bonding activities and get to see this funny and not serious side of them as we are all enjoying ourselves,The first game we played was bowling which was fun and quite funny seeing how competitive my classmates can get. IT was the most fun when I am able to strike it. Next up was Go Cart which out of all these activities I loved the most as it was really exciting driving at a very fast speed, it was truly and unforgettable experience! Lastly was paintball which I did have a bit of regret not playing it as I witness my classmates being injured after playing it. However all is well and I still enjoyed my time in kluang forging new friendships and getting to know new people. Through all these I learnt that friendship is precious Next up , the coffee factory which was an eye opening experience for me as I wouldn’t be able to see it in Singapore. There were 3 types of coffee beans “Liberica, Arabica, Robusta” all of these ranging from sweet to bitter. Although I am not a coffee lover I still enjoyed visiting kluang coffee factory witnessing the steps by steps to making the coffee beans which was really humid and stuffy. I realized how it was really tedious making coffee beans and that made me appreciate coffee more.

Mr Arman talk was really good however I kept dozing off due to the insufficient sleep I had the previous night which I regretted badly as I found out how interesting it was when I was suddenly very awake at the later part. Firstly, As I am the type which expect to see the results immediately after working hard I learnt that it is not a realistic thing and I definitely have to take my time and always keep track of my performance slowly instead. Resillence and Patience is the key to success and I should always keep that in my mind and not hurry the results. Secondly, he asked this question which goes “ What do you really want in life?” that question really made me think as I really do not know what I want till now. HE asked us to think what we really like and what our passion was and with these, work towards our goals. Although It seems really easy, it really isn’t as I am now still slowly getting there to figure out what I want in life, If he did not ask I would have been confused and not think at all as I do not know how. He said, “ you must have a burning desire in order to success in something” which he then shared his story of how a boy lost his mother through cancer at a young age. The boy had a burning desire of coming up with a cure for cancer and is working towards it slowly. That made me want apply it in my life too, The burning desire that he talks about which is to make a difference to the world through what we learn in our course which can be applied in the future.

Reflective Report (Induction week)

On the first day of school, I came to school feeling nervous. I was worried about not having friends in the class, people judging me, not being able to do well in the course, all sort of worries. However, my worries turned out not as bad as I thought they would be. Someone approached to talk to me and I was really grateful for it but the whole class has so many people though, am I really going to only have that one or two friend throughout my poly life? From here, as you can tell, I worry a lot. However, it was not as bad as it felt. From Mr Yang’s activity, it helped me destressed for a bit. I found out that I still like drawing after all. I thought I lost the passion for it after secondary 2 but the activity made my creative juices spin again.

Things got better on the second day when we were supposed to go Malaysia for our trip. I supposed I couldn’t stand being friendless and tried to open up bit by bit. Thanks to the traffic jam I managed to get to converse or say, at least participate in what they were doing. I thought about talking to them many times in the bus because they seem so close to each other, it felt intimidating. How I wish my friends were here but I learnt that I have to adapt to new environments and blend in to it since it will be the case when I start to work. I would not know any of my co-workers and they would have already known each other already so I thought I should really try push myself into doing things I might not like but it will be good for me to have that experience. This is something that I felt I should start doing more since I started going to poly. Things are becoming more real now so I have no choice I got to push myself if not I will fall behind others. That’s something that changed about me from my secondary school self.

Glad that day one ended early because I really wanted to rest. Ha ha. But bowling was really fun though! On the third day, to be honest I still am not close to most of my classmates but I greeted them at the lobby so that’s great. The trip to Zenxin Farm was pretty good. I went there before so the information was nothing new but I did find the mudball throwing pretty interesting though. Miss that out the other time. I supposed listening to a second time really does strengthen my memory. During lunch, I got a pleasant surprise. There are more people like me that is a vegetarian (one vegan friend). YAY. I broke the silence and talked to them. We clicked and I had a good time and we even walked around the area again talking to each other. I suppose you got to make that first step sometimes. Then we went to the coffee factory in Kluang which felt really old and had that vintage feel. I learnt that out kopi-o is actually roasted with margarine and sugar. During paint ball I was really scared of it to be honest because I heard that it is really painful but I really want to have some fun so I decided to not give a damn and ran for it. I got hit in the head the first time and was so shocked I didn’t dare to run forward without thinking again. People learn through pain most of the time and that’s how I learnt not to run without thinking. Should have come up with a plan or something.

On the fourth day, we had a motivational talk and Mr Aman was really humorous. But what I learnt from him is to be the best there is and being the most hardworking. That’s how to get your goal be it studies or work. Some pretty good guidelines for goal setting. They are: Being specific, Finding Motivation, Measurable, Action Plan, Realistic and setting a time limit. Being disciplined is also very important as well together with the 10-thousand-hour rule. All these require a lot of effort to be put in and I don’t think I have that much perseverance but I am going to give it a try I want to do well. Why? Because there are things I want to do for the society that’s why I’m in this course in the first place. That’s my motivation.

1) Beginning a new learning journey in Ngee Ann was undoubtedly exciting for me. There were so many new things to learn about the school, not only academic-wise but also about the school environment and school practices. I’m glad to have been able to clarify some of my doubts after the first day already. We were introduced to facilities in the school such as Sandbox and the Maker’s Academy and it was an eye-opening experience as there weren’t machines like the 3D printers in my secondary school. I was also elated by the fact that we were taught to think creatively by starting off with watching a video about painting and believing in ourselves. I felt like these simple activities really boosted by confidence and I felt readier than ever before for education in the polytechnic.

Our trip to Malaysia was definitely the highlight of the induction week as there were many key learning points to take away throughout the entire trip. It was amazing to watch complete strangers bond through the bonding activities during the trip. There were games that required us to work in teams without prior notice and I feel like those were the best times for us to strengthen our bonds.

During the trip, I also learnt important lessons about time management and careful planning while we were choosing our groupmates for the upcoming project. It was not about choosing groupmates based on preference, but we also had to meet the requirements and accommodate to everyone so it was a tough obstacle to overcome but I’m glad we were able to discuss the groupings as a course.

Of course, every trip involves value-inculcating and through this trip, I have learnt to understand and respect the culture in Malaysia.

I also listened to our tour guide attentively as she talked about the various trademarks every time we pass by a significant location

Bringing us to the coffee factory and organic farm was also a great idea as the whole experience was just unbelievably enriching. I gained so much knowledge and it was interesting to get to see the various farming methods I’ve learnt in Geography in secondary school being applied in real life. It almost felt like I extended my learning outside of my classroom.

In a nutshell, the induction week was really productive and the best way to kickstart my Polytechnic life.

2)For myself, I think the most important segment of the entire trip was definitely Mr Aman’s motivational talk. I felt like I connected and could feel he sincerity in his words which had led me to tear up a few times during his talk. I think what struck me most was when he questioned us why are we aiming so high in our life academically for. It really made me think a lot and I think that it really impacted my life in a way as I realized I needed to search and think about the answer to this question in order to start up a burning desire to do well for my future. His talk made me realized that many of us lose motivation and feel like giving up often because we really lack a strong burning desire to do well. Therefore, I am going to carefully think and plan for myself for now on. Another key takeaway would be the message of always doing more in order to achieve the best out of this extremely competitively world. What we might have thought was sufficient effort might not be produce the outcome we all want and most definitely isn’t the best that we can do. I need to stretch my potential and aim to do better and much more than I am expected to do in order to achieve satisfying results. Lastly, in order to keep myself going even during the bad days, I decided to keep in mind “event + response = outcome”.

I must not think that all hopes are lost when faced with a challenging problem, because it is how I respond and react to it that will eventually determine if things would turn out right.

1) Firstly, when I stepped into sandbox for the sparks workshop, it reminded me of the times in secondary school when I had my favourite most favourite lessons, design and technology. Thus, this got me excited. My knowledge about the different machines and technologies they provided there indeed widen a lot, for example, I did not know that 3D printers existed! Furthermore, I’ve learnt that 3D printers are very useful & it could make people’s especially engineers life’s easier! Another thing I felt very interesting was that the materials provided in sandbox was all recycled. Unlike most workshops, it is rare to find that the materials used are eco-friendly such as the woods provided are from boxes and crates. This emphasizes a lot on the importance of reduce, reuse and recycle. Additionally, I was so contented to find out that us students are allowed to use the facilities at sandbox on a daily basis. This would definitely allow me to go out of my comfort zone and finally be able to test out on the ideas I have been wanting to try.

Secondly, the camaraderie quest forced me to step out of my comfort zone, from meeting new people to having to communicating with them comfortably. Starting of with the very first activity of our trip, bowling. I cant lie, at that point of time, I felt a little worried and uncomfortable as I barely knew any friends there. Luckily, during the bowling session, my classmates were all very friendly and open to each other. This made a strong bond between us. Even though the bowling alley’s condition was not as good as the ones we have in Singapore which caused most of us to bowl badly, I feel that what matters most was the process we had. We had lots of fun and I made lots of new friends through this activity. Then, the following day we played paintball. I have learnt that paintball is all about team spirit, only with a good team spirit then we can strive to win. Without a good communication within the team, it is very hard to play paintball. Thus, this created the opportunity for many of us to bond together through teamwork and communication.

Thirdly, the learning excursions we had were definitely an eye-opener for me. Despite the hot weather, I had a fruitful experience at the organic farm. I have learnt how to maintain and garden organic farms the most organic way as possible. I was very impressed by the many tedious steps the farmers follow to ensure that the vegetables grow healthily and the quality of vegetables sold to customers are value for money. What made me more fascinated was the fact that unlike some other organic farms, the farmers I met in Zen Xin organic farm were very hardworking and they would even go an extra mile to ensure that the quality of vegetables grown are good. Next was the coffee factory, despite myself being a barista at Starbucks, I never actually gotten the chance to see how the process of beans were made which I found very flabbergasted and interesting. Moreover, the freshly brewed coffees tasted different from all the other coffees I have drank.

2)The first key takeaway is that there are 3 types of people in this world. Firstly, there are the people who do less than what is asked for. Secondly, there are the people who do exactly, which means that they do the minimum that is asked for, & this is also where most people are. Lastly there are the people who do more than where they will do more than what they are asked for, which unfortunately very few people fall in this category. Usually people who fall into the category of more than are obviously more successful. Personally, I fall in the category exactly, which after this talk, I realised I need push myself in order to fall into the category more than as this would help me in the future.

The second key takeaway, is the quote that says "do things that you love, not for the money". Personally, when I first started off working in Starbucks, it was honestly for the money, to earn extra allowance. However, as the days went by, I found an interest at Starbucks, latte art. I made many barista friends and most of them had the same interest as me. We would practice and compare each other's latte art. At the same time, helping each other to improve. this really got me excited for my next work day. I found myself looking forward to going to work as I could pursue my interest while earning money. It’s like killing two birds with one stone. Now that I’ve found my interest, I am planning to pursue it in the future with my leisure time.

The third key takeaway is the poker chip theory. Poker chips represent one's self esteem. I have learnt that you are the one that decides how many poker chips you want in your life. This poker chip theory shows me that you are not limited to a few poker chips, one small mistake does not pull you down neither does it mean that it is the end of the world. You can choose to have many more poker chips than any others. Thus, do not limit yourself to a few amounts of poker chip as the choice is yours.

The fourth key takeaway would be the increase in self-esteem by constantly saying positive words to oneself. An example would be looking at oneself in the mirror & complimenting oneself like saying words such as "I look good today". This would help to boost one's self esteem.

The last key takeaway is the event + response = outcome formula. Things might not turn out the way we expect or want it to be, thus our response plays a very important role in determining the outcome. The event takes only 10% while the response takes up to 90%, adding up to a 100%. Thus, if one don’t respond to the event, the outcome would only be 10% however if one responds to the event, it would be a 100%. Thus, in life, it depends on whether one responds (100%) to the event or not (10%), this would lead to determining the outcome.

Reflection report

1) Discuss at least 5 things you learn or discovered – for example about design, or working in groups or the physical world – through participating in the Sparks Workshop, Camaraderie Quest (bonding activities) and the Learning excursion (Coffee factory visit)

On the 4-Day 3-Night bonding program in Malaysia I learnt a lot about myself and my classmates around me. At the same time I got the opportunity to gain some useful life lesson and values which can be of very good use to me as I embark on my new journey in poly. On day 1, although we were alittle behind time due to the bad traffic we still managed to squeeze in sometime for a bowling session. During this time I got the chance to get to know my course mates better and open up more to socializing with others around me. It was a good experience and lesson learnt because in school, would cross paths with many different kinds of people from all walks of life. The day ended simply with the collection of our room cards. Day 2 was a bit more exciting we managed to visit two tourist hotspots in JB. First up was the coffee factory. We got the opportunity to see how much hard work is put in to manufacture less that about 10 bags a coffee powder. The workers had to work though less than ideal conditions in the factory. Life wasn’t easy for them and I from this I learnt to appreciate what I have around me because even for something small like a bag of coffee a lot of hard work was needed. Next visit was to ZenXin Organic farm. Although there really wasn’t much to take away from this visit I did learn the importance of conservation of the environment giving me more meaning in my course of study CEM. At the end of the day, we ended off with some light hearted simple bonding games. Although it was nothing elaborate I had just as much fun and even made a few new friends along the way. The next day we had a talk by Mr. Aman an experienced motivational speaker who has been giving speeches for years. I learnt the most form this talk. Three take away points I have is firstly “ Make active choices in life instead of going with the flow.” Next, have a Growth Mindset which means to have a way of thinking that helps you to grow and take responsibility. Lastly Add value for yourself. With these I hope to bring these values into my days in school and further on into the future. To sum up the five take away points I got from this trip is to appreciate what I got , be more outgoing and also including the three lessons learnt during Mr Aman’s talk.

2) What are the key takeaways from the motivational talk by Mr. Aman? What tools can you use or skill sets can you develop to empower yourself?

we had a talk by Mr. Aman an experienced motivational speaker who has been giving speeches for years. Three take away points I have is firstly “Make active choices in life instead of going with the flow.” It is important to take control of your own life because sometimes going with the flow not necessarily has to be the right thing to do. Sometimes being different is good Next, have a Growth Mindset which means to have a way of thinking that helps you to grow and take responsibility. Having such a mindset is important especially in school because school is all about growth and learning and therefore making this lesson learnt very applicable in daily context. Lastly Add value for yourself. In other words improving yourself which is not only useful for school or the present but also the future. Therefore I find these key takeaways very useful from the talk.

1. During the first day of induction week, I visited an exhibition held in school called Engine Room. We participated in several activities which showed us how engineering is changing the world. For example, I learned that 3D printing can create prosthetic limbs for people and I even created a thumb and a toe with my group using a 3D printing pen. Another activity taught me how useful the Internet of Things is by getting each group to connect different parts to form a device that could play music from the internet wirelessly. The whole exhibition really showed me how useful engineering is and it has made me look forward to what I am going to learn in CEM.

On the second day of induction week, we made our way to Malaysia. After the long journey, we played bowling at the resort we were staying at. Although I played badly, it was extremely fun and I got to know several new people.

We went to an organic farm during the morning of the third day. We were given a tour of the farm in which we were shown many different types of plants and their uses. We were also taught the different protection methods the organic farm adopted as an alternative to pesticides. This includes using a greenhouse, installing sticky traps, intercropping and shielding. This particular portion really intrigued me as I have always wondered how organic farms combat pests. After touring the farm, we even had the chance to make and fry our own curry puffs which gave me a sense of accomplishment. After lunch, we made our way to a coffee factory where we learned how coffee beans are roasted and ground. Watching as several employees worked together to mix the coffee beans with sugar and margarine, I realised how working together as a team can improve our efficiency. Soon after, we went to play paintball. I felt pretty scared at first as I had heard many people complain about how pain it was to get hit, however, I became excited as soon as I received my gun. The excitement wore off fast as we were thoroughly destroyed during every round. Thinking back, the other teams worked together really well whereas most of our team barely spoke to each other at all during the rounds. This taught me how crucial communication is in a team effort as there is a visible difference in the outcome.

2. We sat for a motivational talk on the fourth day by Mr Aman. Although the talk was long, Mr Aman kept our attention through interactive games, jokes and even with magic tricks. Despite that, he managed to deliver several important points that I felt would be very beneficial to me. First of all, Mr Aman described how useful a growth mindset was, and therefore we should give our 100% in everything we do as well as daring to try something new. Another point he focused on is the importance of self-esteem and how to increase it. He then gave several methods on how we can increase our self- esteem, for example, affirming ourselves with positive words. Finally, he stressed the importance of setting goals. He used the acronym SMMART to guide us on how to set goals, which stands for specific, motivational, measurable, action plan, realistic, and time limit respectively. In conclusion, the talk was extremely entertaining and informative, and I will do my best to follow Mr Aman’s advice.

1)	In a blink of an eye, my poly life had started. Nevertheless, my first day to school was a mix of nervousness and excitement. I was nervous because I am going to meet new friends and being an introvert person, i am not open to communicate with my new mates. A little of excitement was because poly would be a new place, a new second home I would spent my next 3 years in. Through participating in the Sparks Workshop, we were introduced to innovative technologies such as 3D printers and laser machines. Interestingly, in our current technological world, 3D printers can be used to construct any design you would want. The sparks workshop also gave me an insight of technologies that would be applicable and in demand in the future. For example, drone is a new innovation that maybe be more common and useful for us to do many things with.
Next day, we headed to Johor for our overseas class learning journey. During the bowling session in our hotel, I realise that my bowling skills were not as good as my other classmates but I have learnt that everything comes with practice, practice makes perfect. The second bonding activity we participated was paintball. Honestly, I have never experience paintball but find it pretty cool and excited and something I look forward to. Given that its my first time playing and clueless me, I thought it would be an independent role. I have learnt that this activity requires strategical planning and good teamwork to eliminate our enemy. The other bonding activity was Go Kart. It is yet another exciting and first time experience for me, I’ve had the most fun in the trip. The Go Kart used are as identical as the ones played in Mario Kart. But discovered that these Go Karts requires fuel and motor to power it to move. Furthermore, the engineering parts used to construct and design the Go Karts are detailed such as the wheel controls and speed and brake must work systematically so it would be safe for the driver. However, I believe these Go Karts would still need much improvements for instance the power of fuel is harmful and should be modified to be powered by only solar power, an environmentally friendly alternative.

Back to the learning excursion, we went to an organic farm. I find the organic farm is somewhat related to my course. The reason is because looking at conventional farms, they would use machineries such as tractors that are powered by fuel. This would produce carbon dioxide as fuel is burned and polluting the environment, resulting in climate change. However, the visit of the organic farms proves that they solely sue on manpower and furthermore do not use fertilisers that would disintegrate the soil and make it less fertile. Additionally, pests would be kill by fertilisers, disrupting the ecosystem, becoming inbalanced.

The visit to the coffee factory was enriching as we got to closely watch how coffee is made from originally coffee beans into coffee powder. Without this visit, I would never have realised how difficult and strenuous those workers work for. Furthermore, given the high temperature working condition to brew the coffee, I empathise and feel for those workers.

2)	The talk by Mr Aman started with a interesting activity, to high five 5 people. Through this activity, it tells and differentiates 3 types of people, ‘less than’ ‘exactly’ ‘more than’. Those ‘less than’ people are ignorant and their minds are controlled to want to end things quickly. Whereas, ‘exactly’ people have the most proportion of all. They only follow instructions and do nothing more or less. Lastly, ‘more than’ people are more proactive, committed people who wants to do their very best. These are the ideal people.

Mr Aman post this question, ‘why do we wake up in the morning?’ this question left me a lasting impression because I have never thought about it before. However the point he wants to bring across to everyone is about Steve Jobs. The reason is his answer is interesting and profound. He said ‘to make a dent on the universe.’ Basically, it means that he wants to create something that would shock the world, revolutionise the world and that is what he did, inventing iphone.

Quotes form the motivational talk
‘Choices Have Consequences.’ Many people don’t choose to set value on themselves. This is important as you would know where you stand.
‘The power of Growth Mindset.’ With growth mindset, people would take responsibility. Reversely, fixed mindset would only blame, complain, give excuses or simply give up.
‘A comfort zone is a beautiful place, but nothing ever grows there.'

Monday was the first day of induction week. I was quite lost when I first arrived because It was one of my first times in the school and I did not know my way around. Furthermore, I did not know anyone in the course when I first arrived. During the sparks workshop, I learnt some useful things about today’s world and I also made some new friends along the way.Tuesday was the day of the 4d3n trip to Malaysia. Even though there was a jam along the way that distrupted the schedule a little we still managed to play bowling when we arrived. I bonded with my new friends through bowling and was impressed by some of their skills in bowling. The following morning we went to the zen xin organic farm where I learnt about the benefits of organically produced products and how it benefited our health. Although it was a very hot day , it was worth it as I learned many new things and we also made curry puffs. After that we went for paintball. I was really excited about the paintball as I had never tried it before and it seemed very fun to me. When we arrived at the paintball compound it started raining and I thought that we would have to skip that activity. Fortunately, the paintball gamemasters allowed us to continue playing in the rain and it made the experience much more enjoyable. After that, we went to the coffee factory . It was a really eye-opening experience as I had never seen the process of processing the beans before. The next day we attended a motivational talk by Mr Aman , Although I was very sleepy due to not having enough sleep the previous day, I was kept attentive by mr Amans magic tricks that helped me stay awake. Mr aman taught me the importance of doing more than what was needed of me in order to improve myself. He also taught me how some choices lead to consequences and also how to use the concept of poker chips to increase our self esteem. After the talk we went for the go karting activity. When we arrived, it was raining and I was afraid that we might not be able to go on with the go karting as I was excited to try as I had never went go karting before. Lucky for us the skies cleared and we were allowed to try go karting. Go karting was probably the activity I enjoyed most even though my clothes got dirty while driving because of the puddles of water left by the rain.I am grateful that I was able to go on this trip with my classmates and friends as I learnt many things from this trip and I was also able to try many new things such as paintball and go karting which I do not think I would be able to try in Singapore anytime soon because of the cost. I also made new friends and bonded with them more during this trip and I hope that I would be able to go on a trip like this again soon.

This is probably the first time I've been to malaysia it was pretty much a good experience. Now I know how getting into Malaysia and how easy it is. However if there is a jam, we would have to wait for 2hrs or even more. The entering into malaysia, the highways were longer and there was so much nature. It took us about 30mins to see another building. We first arrived at Aeon mall due to changes of plan. There was not much difference to a Singapore mall. Just that they had different type of food outlets and also a huge supermarket.

When we checked into the resort, I was super happy there was a bathtub. I have never took a bath before. Since most houses in Singapore only have showers. First thing I learned was not to put the water too hot and also buy bath bombs when coming to a hotel next time.

What i enjoyed most on the trip was playing gokart. Not so much of paintball, the mask kept putting alot of pressure on my spectacles. Note to self, next time please wear contact lens. Go kart was super fun. The feeling when you press down the acceleration gets me so hyped. It makes me forget about my troubles and worries. Sadly Singapore does not have a go kart track :( One day I will be back to play it.
