In addition to this, other practised also aided in the destruction of the murray darling including clearing vegetation and overgrazing. this destruction stopped vegetation that once  sucked up salt from the river and leting it spread killing other vegetation. Due to the mouth closing, water still wouldn't flow back causing more drought and more salt.
