After their warm-up the students focused on fluency. Each student had a partner and a worksheet. They switched worksheets and were timed a minute for each section that they read. One partner read while the other marked which words the other partner read incorrectly. After each section the partner would tally which words they said incorrectly and subtracted that number from all the words in that section. This meant that Mrs. Terry was paying attention to which words they said correctly.
Before the activity Mrs. Terry explained to me that it was like "pulling out teeth to get these students to read." For the most part, students did participate in the activity, but one particular pair caught my eye. One girl refused to read with her partner so her partner had to go ask Mrs. Terry to be her partner. Mrs. Terry asked the other girl why she did not want to read. The student said it was because she did not feel well but it was clear that she just did not want to read. Mrs. Terry let it slide and had her sit quietly to herself while all of the other students read.

These students worked on an activity called "Caught-Ya!" where they were supposed to read a paragraph and correct the mistakes they found in the sentences. Mrs. Terry used the projector to display the warm up on the white board. After the students attempted the warm up Mrs. Terry displayed the corrected version of the paragraph on the board. Afterwards, Mrs. Terry had her students write down the vocabulary of the day which included the words: Daunt and Mutual.

After the students read through their entire sheet they were quizzed on strictly the content that they read. The activity as a whole was to help them practice the speed at which they read but also to have them practice retaining all of the information that they read.

I thought about how the fluency activity might seem to the students. I actually remember doing very similar activities when I was in 6th grade Language Arts. I remember feeling pretty bored with the activity and understanding that it was supposed to help me prepare for the EOGs but still that did not make me more interested in learning. I feel like the students would respond better to reading and overall fluency activities if teachers tied their reading to their personal interests or lives outside of school. I think reading would be more appreciated if it was not associated with preparing for a test. However, I am not yet a teacher so I have not experienced how difficult it might be to tie in reading in a more exciting and fun way.
