Christian Influences:

Three of the main Christian influences in Beowulf are :
1) Man only survives through the protection of God. Throughout the story Beowulf continually announces that God is his protector. For example when he fights Grendel's mother he states, " the fight would have ended straight away if God had not guarded me." (1.4) In this quote he gives it to God for the reason of his winning, if it hadn't been for God he most likely would have died.
2) All Earthly gifts flow from God. success and wealth derive from God. When Beowulf is about to fight Grendel's mother, he sees a weapon hanging from the wall. He does not take credit for the perception he gives credit to god for helping him see the object to help him win the battle. "But the Wielder of men granted me that i should see hanging on the wall a fair, ancient great-sword." (1.5) "It is a wonder to say how in His great spirit God gives wisdom to mankind, land and earlship. He possesses power over all things. At times He lets the thought of a man of high lineage move in delight" (5.1).
3) The proper bearing of man is to be humble and unselfish. If you do not give your success with humility or unselfishness, then God will not help you with any further battles. "What he has long held seems to him too little, angry hearted he covets, no plated rings does he give in mens honor, and then he forgets and regards not his destiny because of what God, Wielder of Heaven, has given him before, his portion of glories." (5.13) This quote relates to the Ten Commandments, that you should always be greatful and not get to a point where nothing will suffice. This happens when Hrothgar tells Beowulf that "life itself is a gift."

Reputation:

From the start of the book Beowulf was known to be the strongest man in the world and when people didn’t believe him he would prove them wrong by doing things that no ordinary man could do like killing Grendel by himself or killing Grendel’s mother with his bare hands.
Heroism:

Heroism is the main theme of Beowulf. Beowulf had to be heroic to defeat Grendel and Grendel’s Mother. He faces his destiny and his fate without flinching.
