Rob has become a major drug dealer, making a very good amount of money off of these sales. Although this provides a way for Rob to create a steady income, one in which he can share with his mother, Jackie, Oswaldo is against this. He attempts to persuade Rob to stop doing this and criticizes this practice. Many of Rob’s friends including Jeff, do not denounce Rob’s drug dealing, whether they agree with it or not, consequently allowing their friend to possibly get in trouble without providing any advice.

 

Oswaldo is offering guidance to his friend as he is worried about where Rob’s drug dealing may lead him.

 

With concerns in regards to Oswaldo’s future, Jeff makes it evident that he is goal oriented being that he is insistent on graduating from Yale. This is exemplified as Jeff writes, “For Oswaldo, the issue had ceased to be a philosophical and historical one, and instead had come to revolve around a simple goal: to graduate from Yale without making that task harder than it needed to be. After all, that was the point of college—not freedom, not alcohol, not relationships, but to obtain a degree.” This reiterates Oswaldo’s differing view from many kids in college, specifically in relation to Rob’s, those in which focus on his drug dealing, often prioritized over school.
