I am Nilufar Mukhammedova, Adjunct Professor at MA TESOL program, Webster University in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. This research was conducted at the Uzbek State World Languages University. This Universtiy offers undergrade courses in TESOL pedagogy and prepares language teachers. Undergraduate students study 4 years and pre-service teacher training curriculum consists of Language Modules in Year 1 and Methodology modules in years 2, 3 and 4. I have Academic Reading class with Year 1 students who are at their age of 18 - 20. In the first and second semesters students take the following Language Modules:

Listening and Speaking (27 hours)

Integrated Skills (27 hours)

Intensive Reading (18 hours):

Extensive Reading (18 hours)

Writing (36 hours)

Communicative grammar (30 hours)

Vocabulary (30 hours)

Independent Study Skills (18 hours)

I conduct classes to groups of 16 students, who are mostly at B1 and B1+ level.

The learning outcome of the Language Modules state that by the end of the Language Modules should be able to reach B2 level of English proficiency.

One of the Language Modules is Intensive Reading module. This module includes Intensive and Extensive Reading classes, each one including 18 hours of classes. Students usually have Intensive Reading class that focuses on reading different types of text and discussing content and language based on certain tasks. Fiction, story was not one of the text types that students worked with. Classes were monotonous as students were mainly doing True/False, MCQ, Comprehension questions. In order to bring variety to the class, fiction reading was integrated to this module. This way, fiction reading became as Extensive Reading sub module in Intensive Reading module.

How to Integrate Extensive Reading Module with Academic Reading Module?
