Emotional Intelligence and GABE

In this video, I learned that Gabe suffered from a freak accident that affected his brain. He could still function normally but his emotions changed. His frontal lobes were partially damaged which may have caused part of his decrease in emotional intelligence. The frontal lobe is an area of the brain that helps regulate the experience of emotion. Emotional Intelligence is the abilities to recognize and manage emotions. Before the accident Gabe was known to be a very likable person, but after the accident he became quick to anger and disagreeable. This may be due to the frontal lobe damage in his brain.

While watching this video I made a very close connection to the character in the video and the client that my group chose to do our group project on, Abe Smith. Abe Smith was in a car accident where he suffered from a traumatic brain injury. It was reported that Abe's emotional intelligence appeared to have changed. Abe often acts harshly towards his family after watching violent TV shows and he is very introverted and timid. Maybe Abe injured his frontal lobe in the car accident, which may have caused the change in his emotional intelligence.

Amygdala

The video said that people who have brain injuries here may experience diminished fear responses. The video gave the example that people with healthy amygdala's may not seek to win a game when one is being played but that they may in fact, seek to lose. I am curious to learn more about this because the emotion of fear helps to keep people safe from things that may harm them, but if someone has damage to the amygdala, would that mean that they are potentially fearless? Meaning that they would be more susceptible too accidents or harm? Without fear, a person would not be afraid of whatever harmful thing may be coming their way.
