Chlamydia is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) worldwide, caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. It often goes unnoticed because many people do not experience symptoms, which is why it’s sometimes called a “silent” infection. When symptoms do occur, they can include burning during urination, abnormal genital discharge, and lower abdominal pain. Chlamydia can affect both men and women but is especially common in young adults between the ages of 15 and 24.
