This song is Lewis telling himself that he is in this cycle of working towards a goal, not being satisfied, and feeling the need to set another goal that will maybe fill that void. He is telling himself that although his career is booming, he is mentally falling into a dark pit. "Falling Up" is also partly aimed at Lewis's fans. This is revealed when he sings "and I looked so stupid, when you came to my show". The purpose of this song is to explain that even though a person may be growing within their careers, they can still be feeling unworthy, discontent, or unhappy with where they are mentally. They may be performing on the biggest stage and in the brightest spotlight, but they might be in the darkest spot in their mind. The tone is has two parts. Although it may be hard to relate to the part about finding it difficult to breathe, it is easy to relate to the emotion that is connected to it. The strong word usage and phrasing give off just how strong the emotions that he is feeling are.
