I chose this topic because it discusses the nurse's role of bringing the benefits of genomics into medicine. This article discusses genetic predisposition to cancer and oncology nursing. I personally know some cancer survivors and have lost family to cancer which is why I feel early intervention and screening is important. This article discusses how the nurse plays a role in that process which is why I found it interesting

I learned that genetics can contribute to certain cancers and how nurses play an important role in guiding patients in the right direction for screenings. Nurses are responsible for assessing family history, providing education, initiating referrals, and many more. Therefore, it is important for the nurse to be familiar with genetics

Yes I can apply this to practice. I can educate myself about genetics and be sure to asses family history and ask the right questions in order to determine if my patient should be screened or not. After assessment I can educate them and guide them in right direction.
