Cornelius Vanderbilt was born on May 27, 1794. He was a businessman his whole life, his first business consisted of a passenger ferry in New York. Building up his business, he eventually made enough money to be able to control the Hudson River Traffic. Vanderbilt grew up with a troubled family, however, this fueled him to succeed even more. Eventually, Vanderbilt partnered with Thomas Gibbons in a steamship business in which one thing led to another and later he was able to buy out many ships and succeed in the steamship business, after his friend Thomas, had died. 30 years later, Vanderbilt invested in the railroad, and dominated this industry. His success throughout his life made him one of the most successful Captains of Industry in history.

He absolutely dominated the railroad industry and was able to make extreme profits off of it. His steamship industry succeeded as well, but just not as good as his railroad industry. Vanderbilt had made a Railroad empire and profited in ways that had never been seen before.
